CLASS As the long and warm days of summer draw near t1me seems to pass much more rap1dly than when We first became sen1ors Now school hours and after school hours fly sw1ftly by and soon we w1ll all be leav 1ng the doors of Hamlet H1gh School for the last t1me The future w1ll takc many of us to far away places Some perhaps w1ll never re turn Others w1ll from t1me to t1me come back and flnd themselves wander1ng through these old halls Whether we return or not we w1ll st1ll have our unforgettable school dav memor1es Perhaps we w1ll REMEMBER WHEN FIRST GRADF All of us turned SIX years old and the penalty under Uncle Sam s law for th1s offense was twelve years of hard labor on the road to educat1on l1mmy Massagee had to be told the d1fferencc be tween g1rls and boys so he would know on wh1ch s1de of the school ground to play Kenny W1th9fSpOOD Marcus Xxyflgllt and R1chard Hodges had to stand 1n the corner the first day of school for be1ng sissy D3Vld B1ll1ngsley rode the bus to school and dec1ded r1ght then that he was go1ng to be a school bus dr1ver some day Judy Mc Kee had only a few curves The only clothes Pat Edwards had were three pa1rs of corduroy overalls SECOND GRADE Gene Gunter was actu ally the smartest boy 1n h1s room and newer got anyth1ng but l s on h1s report cards Shy l1ttle Norman Arnold must have been 1fra1d to ask to be excused because he went home Wlth damp pants every afternoon Rob1n Hayslett moved to Hamlet and qu1ck ly p1cked up the name of Stromboy I mean Strongboy Luke Hause and hlS mob ran grammar school over at the Hamlet Avenue School Becky Hatcher met Ellie Reade Westcott and her p1ano Becky sa1d It was love at first s1ght fw1th the p1ano that 1sJ MISS T1llman vsas kept busy go1ng around her class slappmg everybody s hands Wllh her l1ttle ruler THIRD GRADF Pat LeGrand used to beat Gene Gunter up every afternoon on the HI I5 STORY way home from school lleoxe quarrels were the causesj Bobby Strock started on h1s s1x year career as newspaper carr1er w1th a b1g Charlotte News route of fifteen Roy B1ll1ngsley saw Robert Herndon get sent to the ofiice for tilkmg 1n school md dec1ded never to bt such a VlCIlmfROY hisn t opened hlS mouth yet J Robert Herndon opened h1s campalgn for No l teachers pest and has held the t1tle ever s1ncc Peggy Daw kms and Earl1ne Ormsby played dolls to gether every afternoon after school FOURTH GRADE B111 Allen walked rnto MISS Langston s room YVlfh a dress hat t1e and su1t on and took oxer the 1o1nt fEverybody thought he was a b1g t1me boy from R1chmond V1fglHl3 but he only turned out to be a bra1n 5 The teach ers made Charles Barf1eld check h1S guns at the door before he could come IDIO the room Ben Fetner taught Pat Campbell the proper way to b1rd hunt he k1lled them Wlfh h1s B B gun and she bur1ed them Liuretta R1tter moved to Hamlet and all the boys at Himlet Avenue School had 1 boys and always carr1ed her lasso w1th her FIFTH GRADE Betsy Brown had a crush on Bllly H1cks and used to skate out to Sprlng Street and meet h1m del1ver1ng papers every afternoon Sh1rley Shelton got mad at Bobby Strock and threw a book across the room at h1m Then she got up and walked out of school Earl K1ker l1ved r1ght across the street from school but was always ate The fifth grade beat the s1xth grade every t1me they played baseball We all thought Gus lest1ck was a b1g boy because hc brought around the m1lk and paper and penc1ls Tracy Caulk left us for Vlfglnla SIXTH GRADI' The students at Fayette ulle Street and Pansy Fetner Schools weren t afra1d of anybody because they were the b1g gest ones IH school R1chard Hodges had to stay 1n five hours for putt1ng clay all oxer the vsalls Red Allen s1xth grade and from the slam to Pat l eGr1nd who boys and football Wlfh the jo1ned us 1n the first day was a st1ll played cow boys All the Conunued on Pzgt 253 . . , - V . . t S 4 ' I ' - I L I .
