Hamburg Public Schools Hamburg, AR ABOVE: Won't you tell me how to get to Sesame Street? RIGHT: Sure we are having fun ... it's lunch! Guess What s In Store . As the 1987-88 year begins so do the guessing games. What will our teachers be like? Who will be in our classes? Will we have a winning season? What will our grades be? Will we have fun? Just take a guess. Like the lion statue in front of HHS, the begin- ning of school and questions will always be there. As the year begins to unfold, so do the answers to many of our questions. We don't just walk into the school building at 8:20 a.m. and leave at 3:25 p.m., during this time we are busy deciphering and unscrambling the puzzling factors that make up the life at Hamburg Schools. Various events throughout the school year help make the guess- ing games at Hamburg Schools unique. Many hours of study and practice pay off as teams or individuals strive for their academic, athletic, musical, and artistic goals. The people who are not afraid to take a guess and go for it are the ones who make life at our schools special. Changes, reversals, removals, and turns for the better help to create the new and different look for the 1987-88 LION. Because of the exciting changes, we can't be afraid to guess. We must look a little closer; we re sure to find the answer. LEFT: Oh nol Another one of Coach Stone's speeches. 2 STUDENT LIFE M KATION Mrs. Patti Meeks nice, fun-loving, hard-work- ing, and dedicated are just a few words that describe Mrs. Patti Meeks. That is why this year's 1988 LION is dedicated to her. After graduating from Texar- kana High School and attend- ing Henderson State Universi- ty, Mrs. Patti Meeks began do- ing a little substitute teaching and later began teaching at Hamburg High. Mrs. Meeks has been teaching at Ham- burg High for 6 years now, and what an impact she has made in these few years. Mrs. Meeks has been one of the student council sponsors for 3 years now. Being one of the student council sponsors isn't as easy as it may seem, but Mrs. Meeks has dedicated a lot of time and effort working for the students and faculty of Ham- burg High School. Mrs. Meeks is a member of the First Methodist Church of Hamburg where she is an ac- tive member of the handbell choir. When she is not busy with her teaching duties and the student council, she en- joys spending time with her children. Mrs. Meeks has one girl, Sarah, and one boy, Rob- ert. She is the wife of Mr. Bill Meeks. She enjoys skiing, swimming, and doing needle work. 9 DEDICATION! Memoriam Dermis McQuay Dennis McQuay, 6, of Hamburg died Fri- day, Februray 27, 1987 at Hamburg. Den- nis was a first grade student at Portis Ele- mentary in Hamburg. He was the son of Olderns McQuay and Elaine Jenkins of Hamburg. He had two sisters Marilyn McQuay and Madonna McQuay of Ham- burg. Pauline Streeter Pauline Streeter, 56, of Hamburg died Friday, May 8, at Chicot Memorial Hospital in Lake Village. Mrs. Streeter was a high school cafeteria worker for 6 years. She was the wife of Willie B. Streeter and the mother of Randy Streeter, Dale Streeter, Linda Hollis, Gail White, and the late Har- vey Streeter. Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so: For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow Die not, poor Death; not yet canst thou kill me. From Rest and Sleep, which but thy picture be. Much pleasure, then from thee much more must flow; And soonest our best men with thee do go- Rest of their bones and souls' delivery! Thou'rt slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men. And dost with posion, war, and sickness dwell; And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well And better then thy stroke. Why swell'st thou then? One short sleep past, we wake eternally. And Death shall be no more: e r Prom '87 As the students at HHS danced the night away, they knew not where they were headed or what was to come. Their destinations were un- known. A riverboat, a restaurant, and stars above the deck set off the unforgettable evening. Reigning over this enchanted evening were King Edward Tucker and Queen Tracy Selby. The prince and prin- cess were Joey Hartley and Alicia Byrd. Play 87 The 1987 play had a little dif- ferent twist than in recent years. Seniors and juniors were joined together to work on one musical. Bye-Bye Birdie was set in a small town in the 1950's. Poodle skirts and leather jackets danced all over the stage, while Mrs. Raby, the play sponsor, kept things running smoothly behind the curtains. 8 STUDEMT LIFE im .what i The High Life It takes no guessing to see that the students of HHS know how to have a great time. With pep rallies, intramurals, club activities, and homework, HHS students are kept really busy. But when they do get a little time off, they really live it up. Talking, learning, teasing, and just plain goofing off are all a part of The High Life of Hamburg High. BELOW: The Mr. Olympias of tomorrow. From the seniors anxiously awaiting graduation to the sophomores trying to feel their way through the year, all of us are looking forward to school activities and final- ly, summer. Being in high school is better than being in junior high. There is more freedom, differ- ent people, and better food, said Shane Wells, a sophomore. I'm looking forward to graduation, but it's such a drastic change. I may not see people that I was really good friends with for another 10 years, commented Jodi Graves. We will never again be the same people together in the same situation, but for the time we shared; Ms. Phillips and her over- head projector, the spirit shown during pep rallies, Mr. White's sudden uncontrollable ac- tions, and the cafeteria's cinnamon rolls; we are the classes of 88, 89, and 90. We are all very proud of our school and our program. We hope to perform at all times to the best of our ability with pride and good sports- manship. We hope that this season will end as gloriously as those of the past few years. Our main concern, however, is that we represent our school with the pride and respect due such a great faculty, staff, and student body. As many students try their hands at playing football, switching classes six times a day, or receiving lockers for the first time; they discover that Junior High is really excit- ing. In a whirl of new faces, new classes, and new activities, they are kept busy guessing. I'll never forget cheering, Mr. Rush trying to be funny, and gossiping with my friends outside the gym during lunch,'' commented Deanna Sadler. At lunch we walk around or go in the gym and play basketball,'' said David Dvorshock. With so many new and different ordeals happening at once, the students are forced to mature and accept fresh responsibilities. Growing and maturing together, students face new challenges, which cause their own unique personalities to broaden and blos- som. Sacrifice. Determination. All of these things lead to success. Students with special scholastic scholarships, honors, and awards are recognized at the annu- al academic awards ceremony in May. Even though academic excellence requires dedica- tion and study, the students who receive these awards don't mind giving a little extra time. My senior year has been harder than that of previous years, but this is good because I'm under more pressure and hopefully it's prepar- ing me for college,'' said Jennifer Blagg. The Lion Scholar Program and privilege cards were created to give students incentives for making good grades. Academic competi- tions, such as Quiz Bowl and the science fair, kept minds alert even outside of class. HHS is always striving for academic excel- lence. Many students go the extra mile in help- ing achieve this goal. With a lot of study and time given in and out of class, these students work not only to keep their grades high but also to achieve honor and awards for themselves and for HHS. ACADEMICS 167 Graduation Susanne Lawrence was the valedictorian of the 1987 graduation class. Honor graduates applaud as the ceremony ends. The 1986-87 school year came to an end with gradu- ation on May 26, 1987. It was a year filled with fun, friends, and preparations for the future. With this year had come many changes. For the first time, ninth grade was not part of the high school, but Wilmot students were. Mew courses such as Honors English, speech debate, and choir were introduced. Some classes might not have accepted these changes, but the graduating class of 1987 proved to be true pioneers and blazed a smooth road for future HHS students. These 113 seniors suddenly found themselves having to choose the road they would now travel. The theme for commencement, The Road Traveled, seemed to be a perfect climax for the class and proved that with the right decisions there would be very little room left to Guess. 168 GRADUATIOn 1987 Amy Harrod, Paye Hill, Stephen Du- mas, and Jeff Rainey sang 'Some- where Out There. Stephen Bankston, student council president, posted the colors. Amy Harrod, class president, gave the wel- come. Eddie Tucker receives his diploma from Mr. Harper. With a busy sched- ule of club activities, ex- citement of the athletic games, long nights of cramming for tests, and the many hours of grad- ing them,- we have had a full year of guessing. On the first day of This year was full of challenges and hardships and over- coming these made my senior year most interesting, said Joby Rambo. school I didn't exactly know where to go or what to expect but now it is like a daily routine, said Kristie Hill. I didn't have to do as much guessing as a ju- nior, I think I did better in basketball this year than last year,” said Reginald Moseby. Many questions we shared at the start of the year have been an- swered, but some still re- main. Because the school year has come to a close, does that mean that our questions and assumptions will too? No . . . GUESS AGAIN! Show that senior spirit! 180 CLOSING All Guessed Out! When the year began, we didn't re- alize the time, planning, and work that was in store for us in putting to- gether an exceptional yearbook; but we had to Guess Again. This year we wanted the yearbook to be differ- ent to go along with our unique stu- dent body, who with their unpredict- able actions and characteristics, al- ways kept the faculty guessing. We hope that the Lion '88 will not only be an annual that you will enjoy now, but also one that will stand out in the years to come. We would like to thank our creative staff for putting these ideas into play and for making this annual what it is. We would especially like to thank Mrs. White for keeping us on our toes and helping us when things were not run- ning so smoothly.
