She teaches the students that math can be fun by teaching them to geometrically construct a butterfly and a cube. Every student knows that if you paint your constructions pink; you might pick up a few extra points. Miss Imie shows concern and takes a special interest in her students as well as the community. She is an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Looking Back At 983 A Day Of Fun Before After Fun? Is a pie in the face FUN? Is being dunked in a tank full of water FUN? Is having a bubble stick all over your face FUN? Well, yes. it is fun if it's on Fun Day. Fun Day is the day when anything can happen. Fun Day is the chance to get even with a certain teacher by dunking him. or her. in the dunking booth. If a teacher is really brave, you might even get a chance to hit him with a pie. if you are brave too. that is. Fun Day is also a day when everyone can show his talent. On what other day could you win a prize for chewing gum and blowing the biggest bubble and chewing tobacco and spitting the furtherest? And when else can you test your strength in that most strenuous of sports arm wrestling? Would you want to tie your leg to someone else's leg and manuever down the gym floor on any day but fun day. Would students willingly get egg smashed all over their faces and get into a tote sack and hop around at any other time of the year. And when else can you pit your strength against those people on the other end of a rope. Fun Day It's crazy, exciting, different, joyous, and yes. it’s fun. And it brings everybody in our school closer together. And that's the most fun of all. 5 6 A Glance At . . . 8 Look At Us 10 IMI Homecoming Jr. Homecoming-This year the theme was Hits of 82” Angie Streeter was chosen as queen and her court was Richclle Carle. It all started in July when three officers attended camp at Ouachita Baptist University. They came back fired up and ready to work with the theme Good Friends Stay Together”: this has a symbol of three G’sgrab a friend, get involved, and grow together. The Council began by holding a faculty luncheon the day before school started. Each teacher was given a survival kit and a sign identifying his room. For the first day of classes, a sign was put up behind the school welcoming all students to HHS. During September, the officers greeted the new members of the Council with a pizza party. New members were inducted, and a courtyard was built behind the school. In October members of the Council learned Roberts Rules of Order so their council meetings would run smoothly. The highlight of the fall was when the school board okayed the Homecoming dance. This was the first dance in a long time for the students of HHS. In November, the group held spirit week when the team played McGehee. Monday was Red Neck day. Tuesday was New Wave day and 50's day, Wednes- day was Tacky day, Thursday was Sunday Best day, and Friday was Cars day and Purple and White day. With December came The Greatest Show On Earth , which displayed the talent at Hamburg High. Also they held a Beat Texas day where students dressed in Razorback Red. At the beginning of the new semester, plans were made for Teachers’ Appre- ciation Week in January. Each student had a secret teacher” for whom he did special jobs. In February they held the second dance of HHS for Valentine’s Day, and showed a film with popular music from Camfel Production which is designed to unite the students at HHS. March brought Fun Day and the election of the new officers. This has been a great year for the Student Council, and they hope HHS will always remember their theme: Grab a friend, Get involved, and Grow together. McMurray, D. Wayne. G. Tiner Charles Brooks Co. ■n ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------■--------------------------------------------- COACH’S COMMENTS Our 1982 season can be divided into three phases. The first phase was one of frustration due to excessive injuries that hampered us through our first four ball- games. The second phase was filled with disappoint- ment and adversity. The third was that of satisfaction. There is an old saying, The cream will always come to the top, and it certainly did this year. The 1982 Ham- burg Lions finished the year with a winning season and playing good football. For those that endured, I am very grateful and hope they have gained something positive from having participated in our football program. Coaches Michael Ireland and Donald Wayne Coach’s Comments So far this season has been a good one. Coach Ireland and I feel that we are a better club than we expected to be at this time. We have had some players come through for us earlier than expected; therefore, we have won more games than I thought we could at this time. If each player continues to get better by working hard and getting himself mentally ready for every game, we could win our conference this year and possibly go far into State. This ball club has more balance on the team than any team I have coached since I have been in Hamburg. This could be another exciting year for the Hamburg Lions. These comments were written by Coach Wayne in late January. The Lions finished their regular season unbeaten in con- ference play. They won the District 8-AA Tournament in DeWitt by defeating Eudora, DeWitt, and Drew Central. They advanced to the semi-finals of State Regional in Fordyce as of this printing. WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN that you were always willing to help when we needed material for our class. WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN that you encouraged us to try new ideas. WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN that you listened to us when we had problems. WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN that you liked to hear our opinion and often asked us what that opinion was. WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN that you frequently shared your knowledge with us. WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN that you never lost your enthusiasm for living. WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN that you loved to laugh with us. And even if you aren’t with us daily at HHS, we want you to know that WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN YOU are our friend. The staff of Hamburg High. Mrs. Evelyn Smith retired from her position as librarian at Hamburg High School at the end of the 1981-82 school year. She served as librarian at HHS for 21 years. Mrs. Smith came to Hamburg in 1961 as a junior high English teacher. She attended summer school at the University of Central Arkansas to become a certified librarian and returned to Hamburg High School as librarian in 1966. She earned her master's degree in library science from Texas Women's University at Denton. Texas. In 1973. Mrs. Smith was born and lived most of her life in Ashley County. Her parents are the late Dr. and Mrs. E. O. White. She attended elementary school at Crossett, high school at Hamburg, and graduated from A M College. Mrs. Smith has actually taught school for 28 years. She taught for seven years in Moro, Fountain Hill, and Lake Village. She began teaching in Moro in 1938 when she was 20 years old. She taught social studies and English. She started teaching after the depression. After seven years of teaching she married John D. Smith of Moro and had three children. She didn’t teach for 17 years during the time her children were growing up. After her husband’s death, she moved to Hamburg and made it her permanent home. She began teaching in Hamburg in 1961. The most satisfying aspect of her teaching has been her association with so many young people and with teachers and administrators she has worked with. Mrs. Smith said. “The only thing 1 regret about not being a teacher is not being able to be around young people, which I really like, because 1 don’t plan to be a senior citizen.” Mrs. Evelyn Smith Mrs. Smith is a very loveable person. She has always tried to do her best, no matter what. Her guidance as a sponsor was more like that of a mother. She loved her work and tried to pass that interest on to the students. Laura Wells. Library Assistant 157 The Finale We hope that as you glance at the 1983 LION, that it will recall many fond memories of HHS. This year we tried to include not only the high school, but the entire school system. We would like to thank the staff.
