W. Allbritton greeted us the day we enrolled in the first grade and served as our principal the six years we were in ele- mentary school. The genuine interest he had in ail of us did not end with our promotion to the seventh grade. He has continued to be our friend and a person we have continued to respect. A Time For Beauty The four girls nominated by their fellow seniors to compete for Lion Queen were Marilyn Doss, Melanie Drake, Debbie Holland, and Georgia Bowen. A dream comes true! Ground was broken for a new high school facility on November 30. A Time To Build Boys initiated into the Future Farmers of America came to school with toy tractors. A Time To Play Santa shared goodies with students in the Hamburg schools on December 17. A Time To Give A Time To Win Jeffery Watkins gets two points for Hamburg against Dermott. A Time To Entertain Linda Brown serves coffee to parents of National Honor Society members. A Time To Graduate Warner Witherington and James Hall have a dress rehearsal for graduation exercises. Linda Brown and Melanie Drake proudly represent the senior class. Homecoming '71 The 1971 homecoming theme was Fairyland Fantasies. In a coronation ceremony in the gym on October 29, Debbie Holland was crowned queen by Co-captain James Spivey. Alan Davis presented the queen a bou- quet of red roses. The royal court was entertained with a program planned by the Lionettes. In the parade that followed, the senior class took first place in the float competition with a Jack in the Beanstalk theme. The seventh grade float entitled Snow White and Rose Red won the junior high award. Queen Debbie and her maids were presented in pre- game ceremonies at the football field. They were es- corted by their fathers. A perfect ending to the homecoming celebration came when the Lions defeated the Lake Village Beavers. Kav Barnes, junior maid, is shown in the fairyland garden. Mrs. Smith gives a helping hand to Fred Hogan on the library assistants' float. Queen Debbie leaves the field with her escorts - Mr. Harold Holland, her father and co-captains Alan Davis and James Spivey. The mascots are Kim Martin and Jim Rankin. The Lionettes planned homecoming, decorated the gym and field, and then marched in the parade. Fairyland Fantasies The homecoming court poses in front of an appropriate drop - - the stairway to a castle. Kim Crews, representing the junior class, poses on the castle lawn. Sophomore maids, Betty Timmons and Jean White, added to the beauty of their float. F.F.A. members built an airplane, but some football boys made themselves available for the picture. Homecoming Western Style Queen Peggy and her maids are pictured at the homecoming game. The Cubettes chose a western theme for the junior high homecoming on October 28. Peggy Harris was crowned queen and she and her maids reigned over the program in the gym and the football game that night when the Cubs defeated Dumas. They participat- ed in the parade the next day. Susan Spivey and Sue Sink were ninth grade homecoming maids. Mrs. Coats and Mrs. Jaggers gave last minute instructions. A group of gypsies performed. The seventh grade float won first place in the junior high division. Eighth grade maids were Tammy Bonds and Lisa Carpenter. Cancan girls, all members of the Cubettes. danced for the queen. Flo Jenkins and Robbin Turner represented the seventh grade. It's official now • - homecoming queen Dr. Robert E. Turner is serving his second year as superinten- dent of the Hamburg Public Schools. Dr. Turner did his undergraduate work at Arkansas A M Col- lege (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello), received a master's degree at the University of Arkansas, and earned the Doctorate of Education Degree at Northeast Louisiana Universi- ty. Before assuming his present position, he had experience as a classroom teacher, coach, dean of men, and superintendent. During Dr. Turner's first year at Hamburg, the voters approved an increase in millage for the construction of a new high school complex and ground was broken at the site on November 30. Dr. Robert E. Turner Superintendent Administration 14 Mr. J. W. Hall is completing his twenty-fourth year as principal of Hamburg High School. After receiving a bachelor's degree and an army commission at Ouachita Baptist College (now Ouachita Baptist University), Mr. Hall served in the armed forces. At the end of World War II, he attended George Peabody School for Teach- ers where he received a master’s degree in school administration. Mr. Hall came to Hamburg as principal and social studies teacher in 1948. Mr. J. W. Hall High School Principal Mr. Shelby Harrod Middle School Principal Mr. Harrod has a B. S. E. Degree from Arkansas A M College and a master's degree from the University of Arkansas. He came to Hamburg High School in 1955 as a teacher and coach and assumed his present position last year while con- tinuing to coach the senior basketball team. Mr. B. W. Allbritton Elementary School Principal Mr. Allbritton has been principal of the elemen- tary school since 1957. He is a graduate of Del- ta State College and has a master's degree from the University of Mississippi. He has done addi- tional graduate work at the University of Arkan- sas and the University of Mississippi. To Be Creative The journalism class reports school news in regu- lar editions of THE HAMBURGER. To Report Art provides students with different shades of thought. It was added to the curriculum this year and students have worked with free form designs, pastels, charcoals, pull-string designs, mosiacs, and oils. Kay Smith, Mary Burnette, David Jenkins, and Mike Sanderlin wish for a trip to France. In addition to learning a second language, French students explore the customs, history, and culture of a foreign country. To Explore Steve White and Dickie O'Neal paint with oils. Melba Girtmon types while Suellen Wilcoxon and Jacqueline Hill do paste-ups. Judy Smith is busy writing a news story. 24 A Time . . . To Plant; A Time To Pluck New methods are taught in agri classes to provide valuable assistance to the future farmers. Danny Gulledge, James Gwin, and Dale Streeter plant a pine seedling. To Sew Girls in home economics classes learn helpful homemaking hints that will be useful when they have homes of their own. Debbie Pullin and Gail Streeter learn the art of dressmaking. To Learn Skills Various skills are taught in industrial arts. For Research The library has become a center of learning, equipped to meet the needs of every student. John Gee uses a popular reference book in the library - - the dictionary. To Speak Speech students take part in panel dis- cussions and get experience in public speaking. To Develop Salable Abilities Several courses in business education are offered to build skills for personal and vocational use. Alice High, Erma Grayson, and Frank Jenkins work on a typing assignment. Girls in Mrs. Jaggers' P. E. classes exercise to stay in shape. To Exercise Physical education plays an important role in the curriculum as it emphasizes building both body and character. Band members relax before falling in to march in the homecoming parade. For Music Band members learn to appreciate and play good music. They were the first to present a musical, Dracula, Baby, as their junior class play. They continued to display their drama and musical talents by presenting Once Upon a Mattress during their senior year. For the first time, the LION staff added a color page to the yearbook. In the homecoming float competition, the seniors won first prize with their theme, Jack and the Beanstalk. On May 15, they took time out for Senior Day. After getting off to a slow start, the Lions were suc- cessful in gaining victories over Dermott, Star City, Eudora, Dumas, and Lake Village. They were handed defeats by Monticello, Fordyce, and McGehee. Hamburg surprised the favored Warren Lumberjacks with a 27-27 tie and played long-time rival Crossett a scoreless tie. The team finished fifth in the district, with McGehee taking first-place honors. Hamburg scored a total of 219 points and held their opponents to 113. wells, McDonald, davis, and spivev win POSITIONS ON ALL-DISTRICT TEAM Four Lions received All-District honors for the 1971 season. Lamar Wells, a senior tackle was named to the All- District team for the second time. Steve McDonald, Alan Davis, and James Spivey also received recogni- tion as members of the team. All are seniors. HAMBURG 27 WARREN 27 Surprising Hamburg Lets Unbeaten Warren Off the Hook. This sports' page headline in a state paper followed the 27-27 Hamburg-Warren tie on September 10. The Lumberjacks had been listed as one of the top dozen AA teams in the state. HAMBURG 10 MONTICELLO 28 The Lions traveled to Monticello to open the season on September 3 where they allowed the Billies to come from behind and post a 28-10 victory over them. After Warren scored first, the Lions marched 65 yards and McDonald sneaked over the goal line. Hamburg's second touchdown came on a 40-yard pass from Mc- Donald to Watkins. Collins kicked both extra points. Spivey scored from the five-yard line, topping a 65- yard drive by the Lions. Hamburg's final score was on a nine-yard keeper play by McDonald. Striking quickly, Jack McDonald returned a Monti- cello punt 90 yards to put Hamburg on the score- board. Collins kicked the PAT and minutes later made a field goal. The Lumberjacks scored in the third period and made a two-point conversion. With only five minutes left, Warren got on the scoreboard twice on runs by Jack- son to tie the game. HAMBURG 0 CROSSETT 0 On September 17, the Lions visited a fired-up Crossett team and played a defensive battle which resulted in a 0-0 tie. Although Hamburg overshadowed the Eagles in statistics, neither team was able to score. Stanton Veazey and Lamar Wells were cited for their jack McDonald makes YARDAGE AGAINST EUDORA excellent play in this game and were named Lions of the Week. HAMBURG 37 DERMOTT 12 Led by quarterback Jack McDonald who passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more, the Lions defeated Dermott September 24 for their first victory. Hamburg's first score came on a 57-yard pass to Veazey with Collins adding the extra point. Mc- Donald then scored on an 85-yard punt return. The PAT failed. McDonald's second touchdown was an 11-yard keeper play. Collins converted. Later Jeffers took a McDonald pass to score. In the second half Collins kicked a 77-yard field goal and Mike Fulgham ran five yards for a touch down. The PAT was successful. HAMBURG 14 FORDYCE 21 Hamburg was plagued by mistakes when defeated 21-14 by Fordyce on October 4. The Redbugs scored first, but Hamburg tied the score 6-6 before halftime when Jack McDonald passed 10 yards to Watkins for a touchdown. SPIVEY EYES GOAL LINE AT DUMAS Fordyce scored twice in the second half, making both PATS. With three seconds on the clock, McDonald connected with Jeffers for a 13-yard touchdown and Collins added the extra point. HAMBURG 14 STAR CITY 12 James Gwin and Jack McDonald were named Lions of the Week. Utilizing a ground attack, the Lions defeated district leader Star City 14-12 on October 8. Star City was rated fifth in AA and was undefeated. HAMBURG 38 EUDORA 6 Behind the rushing of fullback James Spivey, the Lions smothered Eudora 38-6 October 15. Three Hamburg scores came on runs of 51 and 19 yards by Spivey and 35 yards by Watkins. Star City scored first, but the PAT failed. McDonald capped an 80-yard drive to score for the Lions, and Collins converted to put Hamburg ahead 7-6 at the half. In the third period, Watkins scored for Hamburg anj Collins added the PAT. With only two minutes Stanton Veazey returned the second half kick-off 70 yards for six points and Collins added three with a 45-yard field goal. Willard Barnett then scor- ed on a four-yard plunge. Collins had a successful night as he converted after every touchdown. Willard Barnett and James Spivey were singled out for their effort in this game. HAMBURG 28 DUMAS 0 Traveling to Dumas October 22, the Lions scored in every period to defeat the Bobcats 28-0. Spivey scored in the first and second periods on jaunts of seven and four yards. Jack McDonald added six points in the third quarter on a one-yard plunge, and in the final quarter, Veazey went over from the two-yard line to score. Collins made all four extra points. In the second period, Collins kicked a 30-yard field goal and Spivey went over to score from the five. Veazey scored twice in the third period, and Hamburg's final touchdown came on a 65-yard punt return by Jeffers. Collins had a perfect night when he kicked his sixth extra point. Ronnie Collins and Danny Jeffers were named Lions of the Week. HAMBURG 6 . McGEHEE 31 In the last game of the season, McGehee defeated the Lions 31-6 on November 5. Watkins got Hamburg's only score when he went across from the 15-yard line. The PAT failed. Hamburg's homecoming celebration ended in a 45-6 victory over Lake Village October 29. The visitors scored early to take a 6-0 lead. Hamburg controlled the game from this point with Veazey scoring on a ten-yard sweep, followed by a plunge A series of turnovers enabled the Owls to add two touchdowns before the half. After being held score- less in the third period, the Owls again benefited from turnovers and added two more touchdowns to gain a 31-6 victory. The Lions opened the season in Wilmot and were de- feated on their first try. Following this defeat, they won two games, posting victories over Dermott and Fountain Hill before they suffered their second loss which was dealt them by Dumas. They went on to outscore Fordyce, Crossett, 3nd Star City to obtain an impressive 7 - 3 record by midseason and the end of 1971. In 1972, the Lions more or less alternated victory with defeat as they lost to Lake Village and beat Eudora. A flu-stricken pack of Lions could not han- dle McGehee, but recuperated in time to beat Der- mott the next week. Then the Lions received Clifton Tucker - Junior Nathaniel Wilson Junior Jeffery Watkins - Junior David Bays - Junior Danny Jeffers - Junior successive blows from Monticello, Warren, and Cros- sett. They did not give up and put Fordyce down once again. The regular season closed with losses to Monti- cello, McGehee, Lake Village, and Dumas. Hamburg also competed in two invitational tourna- ments. Playing Magnolia in the Southern State tourn- ament in December, Hamburg fought hard but could not manage a victory over the top AA team. The Lions were more successful in the University of Arkansas at Monticello classic as they advanced to the semi-finals before being eliminated. Humphrey was the first vic- tim, and Hamburg moved on to defeat Crossett. The 1972 track outlook appears to be bright as the cindermen prepare for another season, according to Coach Gene Shields. There will be several standouts returning as well as a number of new prospects. Stanton Veazey, Billy Robinson, and Jack McDonald will return to take another shot at the school record for the 880 relay which they set last year. Willie Carpenter, the fourth member of the team, was a 1971 graduate. 1971 880 RELAY TEAM - - BILLY ROBINSON. JACK McDONALD, STANTON VEAZEY, AND WILLIE CARPENTER 112 The mile relay team also set a new school mark dur- ing the 1971 season. Veazey, McDonald, and Jeffers will be members of this team again this year and are hopeful of breaking their own record. Carpenter was the fourth member of this team also. Individual efforts from Veazey and McDonald have been impressive as Veazey moved all the way to the state meet last year where he placed second in the 120 - yard high hurdles. Coach Arthur Tucker moved up to the head coaching position, with John Jaggers and Jimmy Coats as assistants. The 1971 - 72 council purchased a glassed-in bulletin board which was placed in the hall of the high school build- ing. At Christmas the Student Council's Santa Claus made his rounds of all the schools in the system and carried toys to a foster child in the community. Under the direction of Mr. Thomas Chapman, the 48-member band was invited to participate in many events, performing in the Ashley County Fair Parade, the Crossett Rodeo Pa- rade, and the Homecoming Parade. In addition, the group supported the football team in spirit, playing at all pep rallies and performing at all football games. The band also presented two concerts. Each year the band takes part in regional competitive events including the All-Region Band, solo and ensemble contests, and the Region IV Band Contest. Junior Band Has a Busy Year The Junior Band had 61 members this year, one of the largest junior bands Hamburg has ever had. The band is composed of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. This group had complete uniforms for the first time this year, receiving the senior high uniforms when that band was outfitted in new ones. The band participated at all junior football games this year, marched in the Ashley County Fair Parade and the Homecoming Parade, and played at the two concerts. They also participated in the regional competitive events. The group has enjoyed programs of films and guest speakers. They also had two parties, one at Christmas and one at the end of the year. Mrs. Spivey, the French teacher, sponsors this club. Fellowship of Christian Athletes 130 The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is in its third year at Hamburg High School. This or- ganization is open to all athletes in all sports. Ricky Hawkins Student Library Assistants The Student Library Assistants have continued to serve well the students and faculty of Hamburg High School. In addition to their regular activities, a welfare child's Christmas was made happier when the assistants pro- vided gifts of toys, clothing, and goodies for Santa to deliver. They also entered a float in the homecoming parade using a storybook theme, Babes in Fantasy- land. At the close of the school year, seven seniors will be presented award pins in recognition of their four years of library service. Mrs. Smith, high school librarian, is adviser of this organization. To Dare is to Care and Stable Home • - Stable Life were program themes for 1971 - 72. One chapter project was the sponsoring of a foster child at Christmas. Members entertained their mothers during the year at an open house in December and a banquet in the spring. Mrs. Harrod and Miss Lee are the club's sponsors. Chapter this year, making a total membership of 160 - - the largest organization at Hamburg High School. The boys participated in judg- ing contests, elected two sweethearts, and entertained their fathers at a banquet. Lionettes For the first time, the Lionettes met daily during a regular class period at Hamburg High School. The pep squad devoted its time to practicing cheers, learning pom-pom routines and increasing school spirit. Dance routines and skits were performed at pep rallies. The group also attended all home athletic events and traveled to many out-of-town games. These thirty-three energetic girls were in charge of the homecoming activities in the fall and the All-Sports Banquet in the spring. Mrs. McCay sponsored the Lionettes.
