TOM SPIVEY. EDITOR As I look back over this year and the editing of the 1971 LION I realize more than ever how many different people are responsible for the successful completion of this book. I would like to thank all the staff for the time they took from other activities and devoted to this year- book. I would also like to thank Mrs. Higgin- botham for her cheerful guidance and wonder- ful leadership. My full appreciation to these people could never be expressed. This has been a year of change and transition for our school. We appreciate the progressive thinking of Dr. Turner and the administration, and we hope the '71 LION reflects this spirit of growth and development. 12

Superintendent DR. ROBERT E. TURNER Dr. Robert E. Turner is completing his first year as superintendent of the Hamburg Public Schools. A native of Arkansas, he came to Hamburg after re- ceiving his Doctorate of Education Degree from Northeast Louisiana University. He earned his bach- elor's degree at Arkansas A M College and his master's degree at the University of Arkansas. He has had experience as a classroom teacher, coach, principal, dean of men, and superintendent. Under Dr. Turner's leadership, the Hamburg schools became a unitary system last fall. The district was reorganized into three schools--the Elementary School, grades one through five; the Middle School, grades six through eight; and Hamburg High School. From the very first day when Dr. Turner was intro- duced to the students in the opening assembly, his enthusiastic dedication to public education has been evident. This enthusiasm soon spread all over the district, and on March 9 the voters approved an in- crease in millage to be used for the construction of a new high school facility.
