THE LION Knowledge is, indeed, that which, next to virtue, truly and essentially raises one man above another. the Senior Class Hamburg High School Hamburg, Arkansas 1968 Vol. 28 TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION...............5 FACULTY.....................11 SENIORS.....................19 JUNIORS.....................29 SOPHOMORES................. 32 JUNIOR HIGH................ 35 SPOTLIGHT...................45 ORGANIZATIONS.............. 59 MUSIC.......................77 ATHLETICS...................85 ELEMENTARY.................101 ADVERTISEMENTS.............Ill ALMA MATER Hail, Alma Mater, we sing to thy praise, Great our affection through all our school days. Resting so peaceful and calm 'neath the sky, Fondly we love thee, our dear Hamburg High. Hail, Alma Mater, we sing to thy praise, Loud in thy honor, our voices we raise. SHELBY HARROD From the desk of RICHARD BYRD I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the senior class for allowing me to serve as editor of the '68 LION. It is true that there is much hard work in producing a yearbook, but the satisfaction gained from recreating a year's activities in our school lives makes it truly worth- while. Also, I want to thank the staff for their dedicated work and especially Mrs. Higginbotham for her time and leadership as our adviser. We take pride in presenting this book to you and hope that it will be a pleasant re- minder of the 1967-68 school year. ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE We are deeply indebted to our annual staff for this fine book. I'm afraid we do not always realize the tremendous amount of work done by the staff members and sponsor in making THE LION possible. Our world seems to be in a constant state of change, and it becomes the schools' respon- sibility to prepare our young people to meet the challenges as they arise. I have all the confidence in you and in your determination to make this a better world for the next generation. Sincerely yours, 6 S.P. Portis Superintendent PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I would like to take this opportunity to commend THE LION staff and their sponsor for this fine yearbook. An accomplishment such as this can come only from a desire for excellence and many extra hours of work. May I say to all the students that I am grateful for your cooperation in helping to make this school the best that our resources will permit. Let us continually strive individually and col- lectively toward higher goals, for today's ac- complishments will not suffice for tomorrow's living. Sincerely, J.W. Louis Campbell and Randy Gifford, backs, were named to the offensive team for the second year. Andy Evans, end, was also a repeater on this team. Winning a spot as all-district offensive guard was Richard Byrd. Bruce Timmons, Hamburg's 215-pound tackle, was named to a place on the defensive team. Campbell was also selected as a back on the All- Southeast Arkansas Team by the Pine Bluff Com- mercial. Timmons was named a player on the Commercial's second team. Again the underdogs, the Lions handily defeated the Dermott Rams by a score of 34 to 13 in the first conference game of the year on September 8. The halftime score was 28-0. Travelling to Monticello the next week, the Lions won a hard-fought battle, which, despite the high score, was really a close contest. The game ended with Hamburg on the top side of a 27 to 0 score. After being idle on September 22, the Lions traveled to Redbug Field on the 29th to face the No. 1 A” team in the state—Fordyce. What was expected to be the District 8-A show- down ended in a 0-0 tie with Hamburg making a last minute goal-line stand. The Redbugs had a 4-0 record going into the game; and the Lions, 3-0. After a first quarter letdown, the Lions stormed back to whip the Star City Bulldogs 26-6 on Oc- tober 6. It was Star City's first defeat of the season. Using a quar- tette of fast and shifty backs, the Eudora Bad- gers managed to squeeze by the Lions with a 7- 6 victory. It was Hamburg's first defeat of the season. This turned out to be one of the de- ciding games for the District 8-A championship. The Lions came back the next week and upset the Dumas Bobcats by a score of 23-0. Two touchdowns with PAT's for both and a field goal put the Lions out front 17-0 at the half. The climax of homecoming activities came when the Lions were winners in a 38 to 7 contest with Lake Village on October 27. Queen Vickie and her court reigned over the day's festivities. On November 3 the Lions met the 1966 District 8- A Champs, the McGehee Owls, in the last conference game of the season. Playing on a wet field, the Lions won a defensive game by a score of 14-0. The Lions again employed a last-minute goal- line stand to turn away the Camden Panthers and go on to a 6-0 win on November 10. The Lions tied Fordyce for second place in the District 8-A Conference, with Eudora winning first place honors. The Arkansas Gazette ranked Hamburg as the fourth best Class A team in the state; Eudora, fifth; and Fordyce, ninth. Hamburg scored 200 points during the season and gave up only 53. Crossett's 4-AA team was the only one able to score 14 points on the Lions. 92 DAVID CARPENTER - Soph. End LARRY SANDERLIN - Soph. Tackle TERRY POLLOCK - Soph. Back DANNY JONES - Soph. From man's earliest hour the forest has been a source of protection, shelter and warmth. Though we as private citizens own 35 billion board feet of timber and by right of ownership may do with it as we like, we feel our obligation is that of a steward. We will guard this resource, nurture it and refresh it so that for all the years to come it will be there for our mutual benefit.
