My first year with you as Superin- tendent of Schools has been extremely pleasant. I have found you to be an eager earnest group and I am proud of my associations with you. It is my ambition that our school may prepare you for the responsibilities that await you and may you continue to carry on with the same patience and courage that you have shown in giving to our school this fine annual. The Lions traveled to Star City for the first game of the season to be chewed to a defeat of 20-6. On a pass from Car- penter to Knight, one of the outstanding ends of the season, came the only tally for the Lions. For the first home game, Rison battled the Lions to a 6-0 defeat. October 1 marked the Lions' first win, when Davis inter- ceptedapass and hit pay dirt, to defeatthe Strong eleven 7-0. The Lions traveled to Gould to win 7-0 for the second win of the season. Carpenter passed to Knight for the only score in the game and Bubba Bussell ran the extra point. Dumas upset the Lions for the third defeat of the season by a score of 12-6. Boyd made the touchdown for the Lions. The Homecoming game was scheduled for Oct. 21, with White Hall. The Lions looked forward to this game with great expectations. Knight hit pay dirt early in the game and Car- penter made the other touchdown for the Lions, making the final score 13-0. Knight made the extra point. In the most exciting game of the season, Lakeside, the state champions, defeated the Lions 19-6. The boys really played their best. Kelley acocunted for the lone touchdown. For the fourth win of the season the Lions defeated the Pine Bluff B 7-6 in an exciting game on the home field. Douglas passed to Knight for the Lions’ touchdown. On one of the Lions’ off-nights, the DermottRams tram- pled the Lions to a 53-7 defeat. Kelley made a spectacular run of 95 yards, but was stopped just short of the goal line. Jl a- 56 mm Boyd passed to Davis for the tally, and Sporty passed to Knight for the extra point. Early in the game with Portland, Boyd passed to Barham for the first touchdown. Bussell passed to Knight for the extra point. Douglas woke up and ran 55 yards for the second touch- down. Kelley ran the extra point. Using the “Crosset Special” Bussell raced for the third touchdown making the final score 20-0. In the annual Turkey Day game with Crossett.the Lions’ greatest rival, the Lions battled the Eagles to a 6-6 tie. Prob- ably more effort was put forth in this game than ony other of the whole season. Boyd made the touchdown for the Lions on a quarter-back sneak. The try for the extra point failed. The linesmen held the Eagles’fast running players to prac- tically nothing in THE GAME of the season. Joe Sullivan, tackle and Senior of ’49, placed on the all- District team. Billy Bierbaum, Senior of ’49, was chosen Captain by the squad at the annual football banquet held at the Country Club. Lettermen of the year who received jackets were: Don Knight, B. Davis, B. Barnes, J. Barham, M. Kusturin, J. Sullivan, E. Carpenter, D. Pinkston, B.R. Bierbaum, M. Wal- lace, B. Jones, B. Bussell, M. Kelley, Mr., T. Douglas, J. Pounds, and R. Carpenter. The boys presented a jacket to the coach in appreciation of his services. Those recieving reserve letters were: B. Regnier, B.J. Haney, H. Deal, C. Bussell, W. Noble, D. Barnett, R. Watson, C. JUNIOR BOVS 61 BASKETBALL Basketball practice was started on December 12 with 16 boys reporting to Coach Moore. The squad was cut to 11 men the 1st of January and a trip to Conway was made to take part in the Arkansas State Teachers College Basketball tournament. The Lons split with every team they played with the exception of Monticello, who won twice from the Lions. In the Ashley County Tournament the Lions defeated Portland in their first game and then metCrossett in the finals only to lose by two points. All-county men from Hamburg were Knight, Brown, and Kelley. The Lions entered the District Tournament at Monticello and won from McGehee by the score of 45 to 36, then were defeated by a strong team from Banks by the score of 45 to 42. The following boys earned an “H in basketball: Don Knight, Bobby Brown, Bobby Davis, Billy Boyd, Morgan Kelley, Don Pinkston, Bobby Jones, Doyle Giles, Jerry Barham, and Buddy Barnes and Glenn Farmer earned an H” as Manager for both Senior and Junior teams. The Lions should be strong contenders for the District championship next year losing only Kelley, Giles and Jones by graduation. The Captain of the team is Morgan Kelley, Jr. The Senior Lionettes have won 19 of their 21 games thus far, unfortunately both losses being in tournaments. The Lionettes went to the Wilmot tournament victors of five games and the second undefeated team in the tournament but suffered their first loss when Desha Central beat them by a score of 37-28 in the semi-finals on Saturday morning. Sue Riley and Betsy Burgess placed on the All-tournament team. McGehee outscoredthe Lionettes one week later in the Girls’ Invitational Tournament by defeating them 41-27. Being victorious of all other games of the season, the girls won the County Tournament by defeating Fountain Hill, Friday night and Wilmot in the finals Saturday night by a score of 38-27. Those making all-County were: Ann Pistole, Lois Sullivan, Betsy Burgess, Sue Riley and Betty Jo Stell. Jayne Burgess was Captain and Betsy Bur- gess was Co-Captain of the team. The Jr. Girls played seven games this season, but were only victorious in one, this being in the District Tournament. Sherri Morris was Captain and Jean Smith was Co- Captain of the team. Six of these girls will be “rooting” for positions on the Senior team nest year. The Junior boys played eight games this season, winning only one.
