It was really frustrating and you might have even felt like giving up. But, looking back now, you see that everything has worked out, and you feel a sense of accomplishment in the fact that you met the challenge and overcame it. lt was our intention this year, while composing this book, to illustrate with pictures the good times as well as the bad. I think we have. We of the Echoes Staff hope that this yearbook will bring you many hours of enjoyment, and also, that it will help you to recall the people, places, and events that made Hamburg High School 1973-74. - M. Hackett As we complete our high school years marked by good times and bad, we look back on two people who have had a long and devoted association with Hamburg High School. For the past twenty-five years, they have directed their energies toward making our time in school both rewarding and enjoyable. We, the students, owe them much. To enumerate all their contributions to our school over the years would hardly serve them justice. We feel their actions express more than any words can. We, the class of 1974, hope that this yearbook will serve to capture the pleasant memories of our years at Hamburg. lt is with this hope, and a great appreciation for their most able assistance, that we proudly dedicate our yearbook to Mr. and Mrs. Collins, who have served our school so unselfishly and with such enthusiasm. BOARD It was a far, far better year than we have ever known - due to the fact that our illustrious Central Board was kept on the move throughout the year. Thanks to the enthusiasm generated by Mrs. Ethel Viehe, the seniors experienced a year of good times. The year started off with a big splash -the car wash of course! Then there was the pot luck supper, senior play, Weekend dance, roller skating party, and class night. The year was climaxed by the picnic, banquet, and graduation exercises. The Hamburg P.T.A. presented the super class of 1974 with the Senior Ball, which concluded the year's activities. Everyone who par- ticipated was left with happy memories and lasting friendships. When I first came to this country on October 14th and particularly to this town, I found myself in a completely different environment and I felt lost! I often wondered what the students and teachers were like and what attitudes they To my surprise the students and the teachers were extremely good and helpful to me, which for me, was a big encouragement. Your love and affection has drawn me I am privileged to be in this school, which has a very good standard of education and I realize would not have been possible without the cooperation of all the good people in this school. It's an experience which I'lI cherish for many years to come. Vernon Tiwari cfo Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Tiwari 24!21 Old Rajinder Nagar New Delhi-60 F-'CJFIEIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS Days have passed so fast that before I realized it I have to leave. Who will remember me in the future I don't know but it will be impossible for me to forget this experience. Words are not enough to describe this wonderful year of mine with you. Every happening has taught me a lesson in and outside of school. American people are so warm, friendly and helpful who make me more than satisfied. Thank you so much for everything for you people who made my year complete and beyond compassion. I experienced, observed and learned a lot of things that no books nor school could teach me in such a short time. Luz delos Santos 1623 Pob. Pulilan Bulacan, Philippines I would form towards me. very close to each one of you. It is a great opportunity to spend a year in U.S. I think I am so lucky to have this experience and I am glad because I am in the Senior High school of Hamburg among all these wonderful people. I am HOT going to forget this year for my whole life. Thank you so much for having me in your school. I hope one day to see some of you somewhere, perhaps here again or in my country. IVIEXICCJ CITY To 12 students, a chaperone, and'Senor Larson, Mexico was an exciting, fun-filled, nine day Easter Vacation and cultural experience. Everyday began with breakfast in a lush, tropical garden. Then our very own lopsided bus somehow got us, each beautiful day, to wherever we wanted to go. From Don Juan Market lwhere we learned the trick of price bargainingl to the tallest building in Mexico lfor dinner and a night view of Mexico Cityl. That bus got us there. The day's activities included visiting the shrines, cathedrals, parks, pyramids, University of Mexico, Olympic Stadium, and a fountain or two which surrounded the city. All the enjoyment was topped off by the Mariachi Singers and a little dancing of our own. What more could anyone ask? Front8r center' Colarossi. This squad rallied support and spirit for football, soccer, basketball, swimming, and gymnastics. Smile, and the crowd smiles with youp yell, and the crowd yells along. This year Hamburg won more gamesthan in any previous season underthe present coach, lVlr. Thomas, posting a 13-3-O record. The team, lead by captains Dan Bilka and Tom Draudt, again captured the Division ll Class B Title and only lost in sec- tional play during overtime after dominating the game. As Coach Thomas says, We've nothing to hang our heads over, and J.T.'s Raiders cer- tainly didn't. 185 VARSITY SCJCCEQ 'K 9 U' P X W .1 CFICJSS COUNTRY Fr0ntr0m'Becker, Brown, Hallen, Schaefer, Holtz. One bright spot was their victory over the tough Amherst team. The team is looking forward to next season, as they know they can bounce back into top-flight competition The team is young and has a bright future around the nets. VARSITY FOOTBALL The 1973 Varsity Football team won three and lost five. Led by Captain Keith Vantine, the Bull- dogs were competitive in every game. Under the guidance of co- aches Mr. Farino and Mr. Vanderzelle, the Bullfrogs attained success in the various divi- sions of the sport such as diving, free style, and backstroke. VVFTESTLING Take one male body, add determination, train- ing, stamina, strength, and skills. You now have the ingredients for a typical 1974 Hamburg Wres- tler! The universal gym provided an area to de- velop strength, while coaches Paul Whitman and Ronald Clark passed on the skills. The guys are hoping for more support from us next year to watch them be victorious in the noble art of wres- tling. Beach, got off to a flying start breaking 3 school records in only the first 2 meets. There is considerably more depth on this year's team due to a majority of freshmen and sophomores. Although it is a very young team, they look like one of the strongest gymnastics teams Hamburg has ever had. We look for a bright future for Ham- burg gymnastics. VARSITY BASKETBALL There were many exciting moments for the Varsity Basketball team this year. The Bulldog Cagers, captained by Dave Swart and coached by lVlr. Charles Mann, excited enthusiasm and school pride. With several juniors from the squad returning next winter, the Bulldogs should again field a representative quintet. TRACK The track team put forth a radiant effort again this year, but despite the excellent coaching of Mr. Whitman, Mr. Gorline, and Mr. Owen, Hamburg had to settle for too many second and third places during the 1973 season. However, Jim Dulski came in first in the triple jump and went on to represent Section Vl in the state meet. A new school record was set by the relay team of Tom Bourne, Dan Boyd, Dick Hofner, and Dave Sampson. Each man gained valuable experience through this season, and we're sure it will show in the years to come. Y l1.a , + A xt- 4 ,f. They won 7, lost 3, and tied 2 to take third place in their ECGAA Divi- sion. Strong defensive play backed the high scor- ing offensive line. This year's larger squad, coupled with constant improvement and deter- mination, added to their success. TENNIS The 1973 girI's tennis team was a real group of swingers . Inspired by their victory over the '72 champs, West Seneca West, the girls finished up with a net record of 4 81 6. Vfll I FYFSAI l Due to the strenuous training program of coach Kath- leen Roche, this year's girl's interscholastic volleyball team practically collapsed from exhaustion. BASKETBALL The process of rebuilding any team is in itself a difficulttask. But add to that injuries, inexperience, and a schedule that would scare even a champion- ship contender, and you've got quite a project. Overthese hardships though, first year coach Miss Schmeelk and co-captains Sally Farr and Teri Califano led their team to a near .500 season. The girls faired well and deserve a lot of credit. They are looking for an even better season next year. CATALINA With Miss Joanne Schmeelk as their advisor, and Mary Thiel as their president, the 1973 Catalina Club once again graced our swimming pool with girls who were strong, yet graceful swimmers. They spent this year preparing for the spectacular water show, Caballet. This performance climaxed many long hours of extensive training in the art of synchronized swimming.
