It lies decisively in love, that wondrous reality - we are mortal whenwe are loveless, immortal when we love. Our love for the dead would be faithless if it lost its sense of eternity. Immortality does not happen by itself. One whose life is fulfilled in the present - immortal - bears the future in time. One whose present life is empty bears no future. Karl Jaspers THE CHAMBERED NAUTILUS This is the ship of pearl, which, poets feign, Sails the unshadowed main, - The venturous bark that flings On the sweet summer wind its purpled wings In gulfs enchanted, where the Siren sings. And coral reefs lie bare. Where the cold sea-maids rise to sun their streaming hair. Its webs of living gauze no more unfurlg Wrecked is the ship of pearl! And every chambered cell, Where its dim dreaming life was wont to dwell, As the frail tenant shaped his growing shell, Before thee lies revealed, - Its irised ceilring rent, its smnless crypt unsealed! Year after year beheld the silent toil That spread his lustrous coil: Still. as the spiral grew, He left the past year's dwelling for the new. Stole with soft step its shining archway through, Built up its idle door, Stretched in his last-found home, and knew the old no more. Thanks for the heavenly message brought by thee Child of the wandering sea. Cast from her lap, forlorn! From thy dead lips a clearer note is bom Than ever Triton blew from wreathed horn! While on mine ear it rings. Through the deep caves of thought I hear a voice that sings: - Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length ant Free. Leaving thine outgrown shell by lifels um- resting sea! From rugs, to music, to mobiles and cages, he has encouraged individual expression and creativity. Caring about people has made him many friends. Senior Central Board These dedicated members of the Senior Central Board successfully took on the task of making all the important decisions aifecting all of the class activities. Encouraged by the spirit of their enthusiastic advisor, Mrs. Viehe, the se- niors of the Central Board planned the most enjoyable and jam-packed year ever. The activities began early in the year with the annual drowning of peers at the Senior Car Wash. The rest of the year went something like this: cider and donut parties, the rolling roller skating party, and the fund-raising Senior Play. The play helped finance the ban- quet and all graduation activities. Last, but not least, was the P.T.A.'s gift, the Senior Ball. The Senior Central Board made this year a memorable and exciting one. And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Committees had to be set up and stalfed and the class had to be scanned for potential artists to design the murals for both gym and cafeteria. Long hours were spent during vacations and after school in order to transform familiar areas into a '6Never-Never Land , By the time the first couple arrived, the gym was truly a dream land no one would ever want to leave. Led by our king and queen, we marched into a pirateis ship where we feasted in the company of Captain Hook and Shmee. The night ended with dying colors and many memories. During my stay here in Hamburg I've realized that Sweden and the U.S. have many things in common. Thanks to all persons that made this year a great experience for me. My address is: Asa Nilsson Bergenhielmsvagen 27 SWEDEN Two months is a short time. but is long enough to learn and experience a great deal. After spending my summer in Sweden I can only wish that more people could find the time to travel. Cindy Evans Many thanks I would like to bring to everybody who helped me to make this year successful. It really has been a great experience for me to learn a new culture to make new friends and to know a different school system. Because of you, this year will be unforgettable for me. When you ever happen to be in my country, do come and visit me! Bart Bistervels Biesstraat 7 Heythuysen fLinburgJ The Netherlands I'm Marissa Parungo from the Philippines. I'm glad to have been given the opportunity to spend my senior year in Hamburg. It is a very enriching experience I would cherish forever. If everyone could have the opportunity to live in another culture, the world would not be such a divided place. Lynn Berry With appreciation for a most enjoyable year of companionship, I would like to thank all my friends, and the students and teachers of Hamburg, who received me with their great understanding and willingness. Peter Joos Albisstrasse 166 8038 Zurich Switzerland lt is hard to express what this year really means to me, but I will say it is one of the basis on what I'll built my future life. It is a full experience that give me the opportunity to know a new, wonderful country, to meet nice and friendly people, to improve myself and my knowledges. I enjoyed every moment of my stayings here, even if not always everything easy. And I thank all of you for have made this year one of the best in my life. Irene Strata Via Costigliole 10 10141 Torino, Italy This year was a year of experience and new friendship. Therefore, it is a little spiteful to go back home. But I never will forget America, Hamburg, the school here and you all, because everything and everybody made a big impression on me. I think your generation can do the work needed and keep everything straight because your generation is the generation that never existed before, who has the spirit, who has all the facilities to build the bestest future.
