PEOPLE So many faces, so many people, Faces seen once and never again, Others ever-constant, not forgotten. A baby is wide-eyed with wonder, At a world ever new. Familiar faces soft with love populate the world. The smile on a child's face llluminates the darkest sky. Openness and innocence shine forth ln laughing eyes. The occasional sorrows and new-awakening ioys Flash across the face of youth. A new exploration ofa world ever increasing, Brings the laughter and the tears, And the butterfly out of its cocoon. A niche now found, secure perhaps, And confidence glows in the face of an adult. The wisdom of experience, And the peace of lengthening years Glow in the eyes of the old. Bright memories sparkle ln eyes that have seen much. So America is portrayed in the faces of her people The baby's bright eyes reflect Her exploration in the new world of the stars. The concern of her people shines forth Like the smile of a child. Her growing pains can be seen in the Face of the adolescent. Confidence in her role, As in the faces of America's adults. And the eyes of America, As the eyes of her elders, Look back on a proud past. - C. Owen
