Library looms large in research materials Visits to our high school library proved very worth- while for many students during the past year. Many useful and varied activities were offered to us. We could choose a book from the seven thousand different volumes avail- able, or we could read the latest issue of our favorite magazine. Many students also made use of the record player, microfilms and backdated magazines. Mrs. Grace Hoare, our competent librarian, assures us that this was another successful year in our library. That congenial meeting place where books and minds are linked. Sitting: Schreier. Standing: Warren, Brogan, Ryan, Patelunas, Fleming. The big wheels of safe driving. Mr. Szafranski, Mr. Coville, Mr. Hutchinson. New drivers acquired safety skills The Driver Education program creates a beginning driver who is acutely aware of the great responsibility he holds while behind the wheel. Many training tech- niques are involved, including classroom instruction, simulator training and experience in driving sessions in the cars. lf one is successful in the course, he may acquire a blue card, entitling him to senior driving privileges and an insurance reduction certificate. The program is restricted to iuniors and seniors. All who have taken the class in the past have stressed its importance and need in today's society. 24

Mrs. Latulip, Mr. VanValkenburgh, Miss Ebel, Mrs. Schroeck. Our aim in health is to keep you happy! Front row: Marshall. Second raw: Mayer, McGuire, Senseney. Dedicated workers made for a healthy year The health classes are taught by Miss Ebel and Mr. VanValkenburgh. The course runs for one semester and each student gets one-half credit for having taken and passed it. Health is taught from a factual and practical point of view. Issues such as alcoholism and drug abuse are discussed. Mental, as well as physical health are covered including such topics as personality traits, heredity and environment. The health class is very valuable to every student, especially those students inter- ested in science or in pursuing a career in the field of health. They added that special touch to school Mr. Ernest Witmer is Hamburg's new at- tendance officer. Included in his duties for all of Hamburg Central Schools are checking on chronic absenteeism and gathering vital census information. Mr. Witmer reports with great satisfaction that students are now tak- ing a greater interest in their attendance. The secondary school psychologist is Mr. Stott, an ordained minister and experienced counselor. He is available to help students in individual sessions and group discussions. This mightinvolve working in coniunction with parents and the guidance department. Psy- chological testing and serving as a resource are other facets of his work. Life is iust a series of inkblots. Skillful hands printed, welded, and Created Our industrial arts program oFFers 'courses for any interested students, whether he is considering it for a career or as an added skill. Mr. Scruton instructs graphic arts classes, which also take care of the school printing, and metalcraft. Under the supervision of Mr. Coville the students learn to recognize and appreciate the quality of wood workmanship. They learn to use and control power machinery to make their first project of the year and later, advance to individual projects. In our academically-oriented school, industrial arts is not taught as a vocation, but as an elective, giving students an opportunity to learn through experience. Home Economics today-happy homemakers tomorrow. Standing: Schuman, Havens, Wiltse, Root. The Fred of all trades. Mr. Coville, Mr. Scruton Home Economics supplied us with a general home background Modernized techniques for today's world is the rule in Hamburg's homemaking classes. Interior Decorating, Child Care, and beginning and advanced courses in cooking and sewing are offered to prepare the girls for efficient and successful futures in careers and in homemaking. Special emphasis is placed on the basic Principles of food preparation and construction of clothing.
