Current problems were discussed in Social Studies The Social Studies Department is trying to help the students acquire real understanding ot the basic principles and ideals of our way of lite, and lead us toward a commitment to values in support of American institutions. This goal will be accomplished by reason- ing, not by memorization, the student must virtually discover through his own ettorts. The tenth grade students study Western Heritage, an examination of European History. American Studies, the iunior program, is a course designed to provide an understanding of the political and sociological development of our nation. ln the twelfth year, an oppor- tunity is given to the student to choose courses in International Relations, Economics, Ameri- can Politics, Russian History, Sociology, and Black Studies. Standing: Mr. Osborne, Mr. Teague, Mr. Collins, Mr. Hafner, Mr. The Advanced Placement program, estab- lished for juniors and seniors to earn college credits at the end of two years, provides capable and ambitious students with a tre- mendous opportunity for accelerated study. All these courses, rather than using the traditional lecture method, provide the student with various materials from which he can form his own opinions. Class discussions help the student to understand the concepts he has learned and to evaluate his opinions. The students are given a comprehensive background and then the freedom to apply their knowledge to classroom work and every- day lite.
