Curriculum changes are con- tinually considered by the teachers of English. Mrs. Dur- fee, Miss Clinton, Mrs. Bol- linger, Miss Gillette, Miss Vilagy, Mrs. Glazier, Mr. Yates, Mrs. Meisenheimer, Miss Mat- tie, Mrs. Starr, Mrs. DeMeyere, Mrs, Birdsall, Mrs. Dornhatter. English offered many diversified courses High school English is one subiect that keeps moving with the student. He begins, of course, in America, and after its exploration during Sophomore year, he is shipped back from whence his language came: England. There he spends his Junior year, until curiosity causes him to expand to nearby Europe in his senior English class. Emphasis here is put on German, Italian, French and Spanish literature, this is considered a humanities course. Additionally, there is the master, William Shakespeare, whom we have the pleasure of encountering at least once annually. Besides American, English, and World literature, there Practice makes perfect. Mrs. Rogers, Miss Pace. are several elective courses from which the student may choose. There are English Expression, preparing the student for college, Practical English, a prerequisite for going out into the world, and Speech, an adventure in public speak- ing. Advanced Placement English is available for those having the ability to complete advanced work. Also, we have lntroduction to Television, Black Studies, and Litera- ture of the 6O's. The latter two courses look into con- temporary writings, lntroduction to Television was formed to give students a basic explanation of modern T.V. programming. His door is always open to a student Mr. Lloyd S. Jayne, our Assistant Principal, came to Hamburg in 1945 as a teacher of Physics and Chemistry. Prior to that date, he taught mathematics and science in Holland Central School for thirteen years. A graduate of Hamilton College, Mr. Jayne has done graduate work at the University of Buffalo, Union College, and North Dakota State University. He coached both football and basketball at Hamburg for several years with the late Mr. William Rodiek. ln 1959, Mr. Jayne was appointed to the office of Assistant Principal. Since that time, he has seen our student body grow from nine hundred fifty students in grades nine through twelve, to its present number of one thousand, three hundred 'forty students in grades ten through twelve. He was instrumental in planning the new wing to our school in 1961, and is now working with Mr. Ravel in planning another new wing to our building. Mr. Jayne has a variety of interests outside of his chosen profession. He likes to play golf, work in his rose garden, and spends much time playing the piano for pleasure.
