CARR WNY SERGEANT SEES GERMANS' MASSACRE PALS Hamburg :Soldier ls One of Few to Escape When 'Tiger i Tanks Mow Down Ameri- can Prisoners'in Field Many mot-hers and fathers in Western New York shuddered gat Christmas time when they read .about the Frst Army unit which was captured and Wantonly slaughtered near Malmedy on Dec. 16. but none experienced the com- bination of shock and gratitude felt by Mr. and Mrs. Edgar H. Milks, '34 Woodview Ave., Ham- burg, sMonday morning when they opened a letter from their son, Russell T. Carr, sergeant tech- Bnician with. the First .Army, and ,riad that he was one of -the sur- vvvors. After escaping from the M lmedy sector, Sgt. Carr went to Bsstogne. Fewer Than .'Score Escape '11 told of the lightly-armed unit of 143 Americans who were over- come by a column of 15 to 20 Nazi Tiger tanks and herded into a field. where the captives were shot by a tankman with a' pistol and by another German in an armored car who methodically sprayed the helpless victims with a' sub-ma- Chine-gun. Some fell to the ground dead or wounded, all who moved or moaned were shot again by Ger- man noncoms. Some shammed death and, after the Germans -de- parted. hugged the ground for an hour before hiding in a nearby Woods. 'Fewer than a score reached Ai- lied positions, the- report con- cludedf ' ' I Am 'Safdf12'fS Having read this gruesome ac- count, Mr. and Mrs: Milks turned to 'the letter, whii2h'read in part: Hope you are fifiot' ,the least bit worried about 'meg because I am very well and comfortable and safe. How lovely it is to say, 'I 'am safe! The' enclosed clipping tells ,the reason why I am here. I was one of the few who got awayf' Sgt. Tech. Carr, 26, enlisted in October 1940 with the First Engi- neers, going overseas in August 1942 with the famous- First Di- vision of the First' Army. He fought in the Algerian and Tunisian cam- paigns and in the invasion of Sicily until- the First Division was re- organized in England before they invasion of Europe. ,He then be- camerpart of an artillery observa- tion battalion with Vjihe First Army. He recently recei kd the Bronze Medal.
