It was not mere chance or whim that made this curriculum so wide in range. Behind its variety of subjects stands the story of mankind through the ages. Industrial progress called for people skilled in trade and science. The business world demanded the typist, the bookkeeper, and the stenographer. The radio increasegil the desire for musical apprecia- tiong modern advertising and design emphasized artg and the role of citizen called for better knowledge of history, politics, language, and present day problems. It is a varied curriculum in a complex world-a curriculum ever changing to meet the conditions in an ever-changing world. ' 7 WHAT'S GOING ON TODAY? EXTRACURRICULAR It has become increasingly dillicult to distinguish between a curricular and an extracurricular activity. At present, the factor of regents credit toward graduation is used to determine the difference. It Was not too many years ago that the activities beyond the regular classwork were regarded as frills of education . Today, how- ever, these frills have become essentials, and they, plus the expansion of the cur- riculum, add to the enrichment of the educational program. There are no other parts of the school life that serve individual differences and interests as do these outside activities. We call these activities Overtones because they add body and beauty. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The highest honor awarded by Hamburg High School is admission to the National Honor Society. Members are selected for character, service, leadership, and scholarship. Each spring a small percentage of the junior and senior classes is admitted to this group. This year, under the guidance of Miss Riehle, the National Honor Society has been aiding the students with high averages to discover the wealth of scholarship aid available to them. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors have been interviewed and encouraged to try for these scholarships. OLD MEMBERS PLAN A PROGRAM INSTRUCTION ON COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS H l,L ,B d1,F M' R'l,F' , , . Merit Award winners of Hamburg High School are those students who have excelled in three types of activity-mental, physical, and social. SPORTSMANSHIP CLUB Hamburg has long held the reputation of displaying excellent sportsmanship in defeat or victory. This spirit pulsing through her athletic endeavors has been promoted by the Sportsmanship Club, organized in 1936 by the Student Council. During the football and basketball seasons, the club manages publicity and appoints committees to sell tickets and candy. An executive committee considers the sportsman- ship, leadership, and dependability of applicants for admission to the club. Since its in- ception, Mr. Collins has acted as the club adviser. It is the duty of the boys to erect and tear down bleachers at games, and patrol the football Held. The girls direct school guests, usher at functions, sell tickets, and maintain a lost and found department. These groups assist in many other ways and thus help maintain the eliiciency already established at Hamburg. Le Cercle Francais, composed of stu- dents with one year or more of French, meets twice monthly for conversation, plays, and other entertainment in French. The Junior Classical League meets once a month. Emphasis is placed upon Roman culture and civilization. The club's one major project is varied each year to arouse greater interest in Latin. This year the Junior and Senior High Schools alternate noon dismissals monthly, thus allowing each section a fair opportunity to enjoy the tempting, balanced meals served by Mrs. Colvin and Mrs. Salisbury. In the pleasant atmosphere ofthe cafeteria in the new Grade School building, homework and studies are forgotten. Both those who bring their lunches from home, and those who buy theirs here, eat and chat together. After a satisfying meal and a few minutes' relaxation, students return to their classes with renewed energy. NooN ACTIVITIES y SWING, RHUMBA, LA CON- GA AND THE OLD PUMP HANDLE Lunch hour means social dancing, ping pong, badminton, volleyball, and a general good time for students remaining in the cafeteria. Realizing the impossibility of non-resident students, participation in sports and extra- curricular activities because of bus schedules, the faculty initiated this plan for noon activities last year. In the grade school recreation rooms and the high school gyimnasium and study halls, these activities are under faculty supervision. This program has been enthusiastically received by the entire student body. I f. -if 'KVEHEP I .1 .u ,-fif.-LE'if-1f f.'Gi'fw sul,- IEE 55H55'1232:1e1fi'..fJ.5 2'if,-I - fl-5 HT, f'f1Q.L-iliinw. DEBATING TEAM The Hamburg Debating Team, newly organized this year, is composed of juniors and seniors who are interested in the discussion of present-day problems. Under the patient, enthusiastic guidance of Mrs. Pierce, the members looked up volumes of statistics, outlined their speeches, and informally argued the questions among themselves. The subject of the debates held with Amherst and Lancaster was Resolved: That the power of the Federal Government should be increasedf, In these meetings the Hamburg aiiirmative team was both times victorious, while the negative team succeeded in de- feating Amherst. The winning of three out of four matches was hailed as an auspicious beginning for the Debating Team. QQQ COACHES The Coaching Staff, through ceaseless elfort, has been successful in producing lighting, sportsmanlike teams. This staff is composed of faculty members under the able supervision of Mr. Arthur Howe. Coaches are more than amply re- warded when they know that through their efforts a boy is taught not only co- ordination, cooperation and teamwork necessary for winning games, but that they have also instilled in him qualities Valuable for life. Into each game played, won or lost, goes every ounce of strength and enthusiasm of both the boys and the coaches. C657 663 FCOTBALL DRILL PERFORMANCE HAMBURG VS.
