THESE TOO I HAVE LOVED- the stimulation of day-to-day class- room procedures . . . the demanding yet satisfying activities of our clubs and organizations .. . the glamor of the extras that make the school year unforgettable . .. the blend of instruments and voices in A Pledge to Hall . .. the excitement as our athletic teams provide thrill upon thrill All these we have loved, and shared, and treasured. May they live always for you through the pages of the 1962 Warrior. ' W ' Editor-in-Chief W 1 1 M51 Welcome Home, Mr. Powell For nearly three years we shared you with the entire Little Rock school district. Now we're delighted to have you back with us. And, because of your enthusiasm for and devotion to everything that is Hall's, we wish to dedicate the 1962 WARRIOR to you. ik ffl X N xhxlx x W if N X. Faculty and Administration Hall High School and Little Rock are fortunate in having capable and dedicat- ed administrators and teachers. That they are capable is shown by the number of advanced degrees held in their respective fields. More than half of Hall's faculty members hold master's degrees, and many more have done graduate work. That they are dedicated is illustrated through the extremely small number of admin- istrators and teachers who leave Hall and Little Rock for other positions. One of the major changes in Little Rock's school system occurred this year when Mr. Floyd W. Parsons became the new superintendent. Hall students and teach- ers welcome this change, not only be- cause we like Mr. Parsons, but also be- cause Mr. Terrell E. Powell returned to Hall as principal. Hall students are grateful for a facul- ty that does its best to provide a broad program of studies in an atmosphere of friendly respect. MR. B. FRANK MACKEY 8 MR. W. C. MCDONALD Secretary MR. Juniors Familiar with the traditions of Hall, the class of '63 has formed the bridge between the unacquainted sophomores and the often preoccupied seniors. The juniors' wholehearted support of school activities has provided the necessary spark to kindle Warrior spirits. The junior year contains many ex- citing and unforgettable occasions. From the first day of school, every junior anticipates the arrival of senior rings. There are numerous other long awaited events, including cheerleading and Cheer- o-kee try-outs, the selection of represent- atives to Girls' State and Boys' State, the election of student body officers, the National Honor Society induction, the presentation of Harvard and Vassar Book Awards, and the announcements of the coming year's choir members and WARRIOR staff. These occasions, com- bined with many others, make a memora- ble junior year. 2 -L Xlf Xe-x5?f ers Diana Barnes Jerry Baumgardner Carol Bean Mike Beard Nelson Bearden Paul Becton Diane Behnke Charles Berry Orson Berry Len Bilheimer janet Birdsong Becky Blake Sponsored by PHILL B BALDWIN, INC. sh. .Fl a . . , 5 MW jim Alexander Randy Alexander Charles Anderson Karen Anderson Eddie Back Bobby Bain Doris Baker jim Balch Ralph Baldwin Johnny Bale Mary Lynn Ballard Kathleen Barden f K ,'.' w 'W fp B , ,-36 1 I 4' , ,A if What? Sophomores Baffled and bewildered, but eager to become a part of things, the sophomores descended upon us in September. This largest class in Hall's history immediate- ly was initiated into the many activities, with a spirited election for sophomore Student Council representative. Then came the frequent sophomore assemblies and the numerous tests, ranging from scholastic aptitude to tuberculin skin tests. These things, together with the complete domination by the female mem- bers of the sophomore class of the male members of the senior class, marked the beginning of three glorious years at Hall. After the initial period of adjust- ment, this class of '64 became a part of the school, and instead of being just sophomores, became Warriors. Music Our music department, which includes the WARRIOR band, Hallmarks, Can- tantes, Hallaires, and the Gleemen, is a familiar facet of every Hall event. At least one of the groups performs for all important occasions. Besides the regular school performances, the music depart- ment gives its time to community service, in churches, P.T.A. meetings, and con- certs. Talent and skill, plus a willingness to practice long hours, are necessary for participation in these organizations. Every student remembers the thrill he received when he heard the band play Cherokee for the first time. The in- spirational songs of gratitude at Thanks- giving, the traditional carols at Christmas time, the spirited music at pep assemblies and athletic events, and the nostalgic strains of A Pledge to Hall at gradua- tion-these things will be reminders of the outstanding contributions made by the music department. Athletics The Warriors, who are famous for dramatic victories in the closing minutes of athletic events, have taught their op- ponents that Hall doesn't stop trying until the clock completely runs out. In the Benton football game, the score was 7-6, Benton's favor, when jerry Bass kicked a field goal with twelve seconds remaining to bring a thrilling win. Other unforget- table moments were a 55-yard Beard-to- Chafin pass in the Pine Bluff game, Paul Becton's 77-yard punt return in the NLR game, and Bert Chafin's 92-yard opening kickoff return in the Jacksonville game. The Warriors finished second in the Big Nine with a 6-2 record. Exciting occurrences came as frequently in basketball as they did in football. The first important victory of the season came when Hall upset NLR in an overtime, 57- 53. Another decisive victory occured in Blytheville when the Warriors edged out the Chicks, 51-49. Wayne Newton scored 24 points that night to set the seasorfs record. The Hall starters ran up a 26-0 score at the half and turned the game over to the reserves. Bert Chafin, Tommy Ryan, johnny Beard, and Johnny Romine scored touchdowns for the Warriors. jerry Bass added two extra points. Catholic High's deepest penetration of the night was to the Hall 50-yard line. l WARRIORS 28, TROJANS 6 f Scoring in every quarter, Hall made its 1961 Big Nine debut a successful one by downing the Hot Springs Trojans 28-6 in Hot Springs on September 15. Johnny Beard ran for two touchdowns and passed to Jerry Bass for another tally. Donnie Dietz scored the other Warrior six-pointer. Bass booted four extra points. Hot Springs tallied on a 60-yard pass play in the fourth quarter. A Benton player stops Paul Becton as the latter returns a punt in the Warrior-Panther clash. Becton scored by taking a 20-yard pass from johnny Beard and re- turning a punt 77 yards. A Beard-to-Becton pass set up the first Hall touchdown, which was scored by Donnie Dietz on a short run. jerry Bass converted after two of the Warrior scores. HALL 54, TEXARKANA 6 The Warriors journeyed to Texarkana on September 29 and handed the 'Razorbacks a 34-6 shellacking. Texarkana's touchdown came on a 21-yard fourth quarter pass. Three Benton Panthers halt the Warriors' johnny Beard as he advances deeper into Benton territory. Bob Gilbert has Blytheville's quarterback, Nathan Austin, as Donnie Dietz rushes up to assist. Austin got off his pass, but it was in- tercepted by the Warriors' Carroll Bates who returned it 65 yards for the first Hall touchdown. 25I TOMMY GOAD CLEVE MAY JOHNNY ROMINE Senior Halfback Senior End Senior Quarterback l I 961 Warrior Football DAVID FRAZIER ALBERT JOHNSON CLYDE CAMPBELL Senior Halfback Senior Tackle Senior End Sponsored by HOBBYLAND PHIL CARR BOB CEARLEY BILL SOMERVELL Senior End Senior End Senior Guard 19 ' 6 1 Warrior Football FRANK NEWELL PHIL CARLETON C. The conversion attempt was wide. Benton scored on Tim Wright's 100-yard run with a Hall fumble on the final play of the first half. HALL 7, FORT SMITH 39 After playing three demanding games in three suc- cessive weeks and having a rash of injuries, the War- riors dropped a 39-7 decision on homecoming to the Fort Smith Grizzlies. Jacksonville, led by Bernie Cox, scored one first half and three, second half touchdowns. WARRIORS 3, WILDCATS 14 jerry Bass kicked Hall into a 3-0 first quarter lead with a 22-yard field goal, but they were the only Warrior points as the Injuns bowed to the El Dorado Wildcats 14-3 on November 17 in El Dorado. HALL 9, CENTRAL 6 In one of their best defensive games of the year, the Warriors crushed their crosstown rivals, Central's Tigers, 9-6. jerry Bass's 24-yard third quarter field goal, following a 50-yard drive, provided the winning margin. Using an alert secondary defense and crunching tackling, Hall stop- ped the Tigers on every drive and generated a fine rush- ing offense led by Bert Chafin, Tommy Ryan and Donnie Dietz. Paul Becton's pass interception on the Tiger 40 set up the Warrior touchdown. The drive was apparently stalled at the 12 when, on third and seven, Chafin, behind the fine blocking of Griff Keyes, got nine yards to the 3. Dietz banged into the end zone from about a foot out to chalk up the Hall six-pointer. The try for the extra point was wide. The Warriors drove deep into Central territory after blocking a punt and recovering a Tiger fumble. Both of these threats ended when Bass field goal attempts, from difficult angles, were wide. The Warriors finished the season with an outstanding 9-2 record. Hall ended the Big Nine Conference race with a 6-2 mark, tying the El Dorado Wildcats for second place.
