2 7 oreworcL Nineteen hundred and fifty-three was an historic year for Halifax County. On September seventeenth, all high school students in the county came together for the first time, and Halifax County High School was, at last, a reality. This is our first yearbook. Like all of our efforts in our new school, this is merely a beginning. We are sure that we must proceed cau¬ tiously, keeping our feet on solid ground even while our ambitions and aims soar in the clouds. Here, then, is a record of our first year, told simply and unpre¬ tentiously. In almost every detail, you will find our yearbook conven¬ tional—even conservative. The name HALISCOPE was voted the favorite by an overwhelming majority of HCHS students. It couples the first part of our school name with scope , which means extent or range of view . The members of the first Senior Class of Halifax County High School hope that the thousands of people to whom this school means so much will find in this book a worthy view of our first year together. 6

ejt)edicci tion This first yearbook of Halifax County High School is dedicated to the man who has dedicated himself to the service of others. This he has done with sincerity—a sin¬ cerity that breeds confidence and respect. With a philosophy that speaks of faith, hope, and charity, he believes in the worth of the individual, he sees no problem without a solution, and he is filled with the disposition to think well of others. Faced with every conceivable problem in school ad¬ ministration, he has proved his greatness. The students here offer this dedication, inadequate and cumbersome though it is, to express this truth: We are deeply thank¬ ful that J. Marshall Swanson is our principal.

Managing a school the size of H .C. H. S. is far from an easy task. To have the respon¬ sibility of starting a school of this size from scratch is far more of a Herculean task. Mr. Swanson has managed to do both with a faci I ity and efficiency which commands the respect and admiration of everyone who is fa¬ miliar with the problems he faces. This first year at H.C.H.S. might have been much harder much more confusing for everyone had we not had the fortune of having Mr. Swanson at the head of the organization. In addition to his ability as an adminis¬ trator, the students at H.C.H.S. owe much to our principal as a friend—never too busy to lis¬ ten and to help with the many little personal problems of a school. J. MARSHALL SWANSON M. S; University of Tenn. Principal dministration Mr. Swanson has been fortunate in hav¬ ing Mr. Leete as a capable and energetic as¬ sistant. Mr. Leete has done much to relieve the burdens that would otherwise fall on the principal. In managing the transportation sys¬ tem, in making the arrangements for all inter¬ scholastic sports, and in many other ways, Mr. Leete has shown his colors. Mr. Leete, too, shared the many prob¬ lems which presented themselves in the months which preceded the actual opening of school. Halifax County High School can well be proud of the two men who head the school ad¬ ministration. RALPH S. LEETE M. Ed.; University of Va. Assistant principal Athletic Director
