I ■££ I ■ PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF HALIFAX COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL VIRGINIA BOB JORDAN Editor-in-Chief uAineAA m ana cierA Teamwork is the key to success in almost all school projects. The preparation of a school yearbook is no exception. Your staff has work¬ ed together to produce this first HCHS annual, each depending upon each to cooperate for cred¬ itable results. THE HAUSCOPE has required many hours of effort. All those who worked, under the di¬ rection of Bob, Tim, and Bill, sincerely hope it will afford many hours of pleasant recollec¬ tion. J TIM DIXON Business Manager 2 BILL TOWLER Editorial Manager (Contents ADMINISTRATION A school is no better than the people who are responsible for the efficient operation of the school. These are the people who chart the policies of HCHS. CLASSES These are the reasons for the school, indeed for this year¬ book. From Seniors, ready to embark on new ventures, to the Eighth Graders, still new to the idea of high school education—all are important. ATHLETICS Giving the student body a feeling of school spirit, pro¬ viding for the important role of competitiv e competi¬ tion—these are our athletic activities—important to the overall development of our school. ACTIVITIES No school is complete without the organizations which give impetus to special activities and special interests. These activities teach students the all-important lesson of working with others toward some common end. Page 7 Page 15 Page 81 Page 95 PRINCIPAL J. MARSHALL SWANSON ejt)edicci tion This first yearbook of Halifax County High School is dedicated to the man who has dedicated himself to the service of others. This he has done with sincerity—a sin¬ cerity that breeds confidence and respect. With a philosophy that speaks of faith, hope, and charity, he believes in the worth of the individual, he sees no problem without a solution, and he is filled with the disposition to think well of others. Faced with every conceivable problem in school ad¬ ministration, he has proved his greatness. The students here offer this dedication, inadequate and cumbersome though it is, to express this truth: We are deeply thank¬ ful that J. Marshall Swanson is our principal. 2_7 oreworcL Nineteen hundred and fifty-three was an historic year for Halifax County. On September seventeenth, all high school students in the county came together for the first time, and Halifax County High School was, at last, a reality. This is our first yearbook. Like all of our efforts in our new school, this is merely a beginning. We are sure that we must proceed cau¬ tiously, keeping our feet on solid ground even while our ambitions and aims soar in the clouds. Here, then, is a record of our first year, told simply and unpre¬ tentiously. In almost every detail, you will find our yearbook conven¬ tional—even conservative. The name HALISCOPE was voted the favorite by an overwhelming majority of HCHS students. It couples the first part of our school name with scope , which means extent or range of view . The members of the first Senior Class of Halifax County High School hope that the thousands of people to whom this school means so much will find in this book a worthy view of our first year together. 6 Managing a school the size of H .C. H. S. is far from an easy task. To have the respon¬ sibility of starting a school of this size from scratch is far more of a Herculean task. Mr. Swanson has managed to do both with a faci I ity and efficiency which commands the respect and admiration of everyone who is fa¬ miliar with the problems he faces. This first year at H.C.H.S. might have been much harder much more confusing for everyone had we not had the fortune of having Mr. Swanson at the head of the organization. In addition to his ability as an adminis¬ trator, the students at H.C.H.S. owe much to our principal as a friend—never too busy to lis¬ ten and to help with the many little personal problems of a school. J. MARSHALL SWANSON M. S; University of Tenn. Principal dministration Mr. Swanson has been fortunate in hav¬ ing Mr. Leete as a capable and energetic as¬ sistant. Mr. Leete has done much to relieve the burdens that would otherwise fall on the principal. In managing the transportation sys¬ tem, in making the arrangements for all inter¬ scholastic sports, and in many other ways, Mr. Leete has shown his colors. Mr. Leete, too, shared the many prob¬ lems which presented themselves in the months which preceded the actual opening of school. Halifax County High School can well be proud of the two men who head the school ad¬ ministration. RALPH S. LEETE M. Ed.; University of Va. Assistant principal Athletic Director MISS GYNETH C. The Senior Class, especially, has experienced a year of almost miraculous events. Coming together as we did from nine separate high schools, we found that the transition to a single big school brought numerous problems. Working together we found tremendous satisfaction in solving these problems. Actually, our first effort as a unified group was made in the spring of 1953. This meeting seemed to set a precedent. We found a unique spirit of c ooperation as we made decisions regarding the design of HCHSclass rings. This spirit has given us the faith that is so necessary for worthwhile accomplishments. Since that time our class has been faced with a number of problems. The first class project undertaken during the school year was the birthda ' y claendar. We clear¬ ed nearly $500 on the project. This yearbook, traditionally the responsibility of the Senior Class, has called for an unusual amount of planning and adjustment to the needs of the school. Much of this work was necessarily experimental. In all our other work as a group, and especially in the elections, we have found a spirit of cooperation and interest which we review with pride. As the year progresses, we look forward to our Senior Play, scheduled for May 6 and 7. We have selected Maxwell Anderson ' s Winterset , and the creditable pre¬ sentation of such an ambitious project is now a real challenge. We shall be the first graduates to receive high school diplomas from Halifax County High School. Our prayer is that this great institution will always be a chal¬ lenge and an inspiration to the youth of our county. 40 s enior RONNIE LEE ADAMS (Ronnie); Baseball, 1,2,3; Bas¬ ketball 2; F.F.A. 1,2,3. As this section of the annual was finished before complete or¬ ganization of activities for this year had been com¬ pleted, some of these organizations will not be listed for this year. Seniors partici¬ pating in these activities will be found in the group pictures for the new organiza¬ tions. When reading the entries in this section of the HALIS¬ COPE, some conflict of posi¬ tions will be apparent. These listings represent all of the activities of the Senior Class in all of the nine previous high schools of the county. 47 CLASS OFFICERS President--Eddie Black; Vice-President--Lou Gwynn Roark; Secretary--PoIly Roberts; Treasurer--Martha Jones; Reporter--Gloria Sue Puryear; Sergeant-at-Arms--Jimmy Nichols. The HCHS F t F. A. chapter is the largest one in the east, possibly the largest in the entire nation. These young men are in training for their future activities in the field of ag¬ riculture. They study modern methods in agrivulture classes, and continue their interests in this organization. They compete in various fields, such as raising live¬ stock, judging timber, and other educational activites. These boys will certainly make the finest agrivultural experts in the years to come. They were put on their mettle early in the school year when the school grounds had to be planted in grass. In this project, as in all others during the year, they have shown their ability and initiative 98 C li eerie a derS LEFT TO RIGHT: Kitty Chaffin, Jackie Green, Betty Rogers Vaughan, Joyce Lloyd, Ramona Jordan, Nancy Swanson, Kate Hunt Moore, Juanita Tuck, Janet Lloyd (Head cheerleader), Anne Burgess, Sarah Hack- worth, Jackie Powell. From Yankee Doodle to Chopin ' s Rainbow The me , the strug¬ gle to profectionize their selections has been diffi¬ cult. Then came the big day. Their first public per¬ formance; the dedication of the school flag. Fol¬ lowing this the band ' s biggest performance, a con¬ cert preceeding the dedication of H. C. H. S. Not to be content with this, they played for every home basketball game and at the Santa Claus parade in South Boston. This is a practical sort of club in which the boys are engaged in learning various occupations, training themselves for jobs when they finish high school. In the morn¬ ing, they are students; when afternoon rolls around, they are workmen, learning useful trades for lifetime occupations. A club of this kind can certainly go far in helping train young men for future occupa¬ tions in Halifax County. This is another way in which our school is helping to build a strong- ger community. There are books to be checked out, books to be returned, fines to be paid, and books to be returned to the shelves. Miss Woltz, Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Stevens give much of the credit for the work done each day to these girls, who have g iven up their study halls to the service of the school. Sponsored by Mr. Thompson, and led by President Bill Towler, they have done a remarkable job this year. The members completely financed and carried out a banquet for members of the foot¬ ball team—something extra that did not come in the province of any other school organi¬ zation. They have been available to help any group which needs a spirited boost—the newspaper, the yearbook, and other groups. School spirit and interest is the only membership requirement. With the school ' s well-planned and complete installations for science study, great things can be expected from the Science Clubs of future years—not that there aren ' t several members this year with scientific promise. The entire club has worked on a project for collecting rocks, soil, water, flora and fauna from all corners of the county. They have analyzed and organized this material as a project for the year. Under the direction of Mr, Leete, they have performed this duty faithfully and well. ' Dr. Dowell J. Howard, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, delivers keynote address at dedication. Perhaps the most significant single event of the school year was the dedication of the new building. Dr. Dowell J. Howard, on Sunday, December 6, 1 953, de¬ livered the dedicatory address to a throng of Halifax County citizens which filled the school gymnasium to overflowing. The dedication formally marked the accomplishment of a tremendous stride in education in this section of Virginia. Following is the foreword of the program used in the dedication service: It is with a feeling of genuine pride that we present to the citizens of Halifax County and to our friends beyond the county, the building of the new Halifax County High School. The work of the architect and the artisan is finished. They have constructed a building. The character and strength of the boys and girls of Halifax County will create the institution. May this dedication service be in truth a consecration of its resources to the cultural, material, and spirit¬ ual enrichment of our community. On November 11, 1953, the student body witnessed one of the most impressive Arm¬ istice Day programs ever seen. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post 8 presented a United States Flag to our school. In the scene above, members of the two organizations are raising the flag for the first time. Our school, the Senior Class, and especially the staff of THE HALISCOPE, are very much aware of the business men who cooperate for the financial support of this annual. Students in school are greatly impressed by the attitudes of the individual business men as they affect school publica¬ tions. i ' • The day of donations to such school projects has long since passed. An advertisement in the school yearbook or newspaper does not necessarily mean an immediate deluge of buyers. But the very fibre of a concern is spotlighted by the interest, or lack of it, displayed by the management in the biggest business in the county—which is the school.
