CC'S GREETING Greetings to the shipmates, families and friends of HALEAKALA! This crew's book hallmarks an outstanding cruise as well as an historically unique period in the life of HALEAKALA. Since 1986, we've been fonNard deployed to Guam, a ship that is always on the go for numerous but brief, voyages. The opportunity to long-term deploy for the first time since 1981, came as a real treat, quite extraordinary to ourroutine mission. The professional, dedicated efforts of your spouses, sons and daughters have transformed that opportunity into overwhelming success in support of our nation's policies. As hardworking sailors, stalwart citizens, and sterling ambassadors of our country in foreign lands, this crew has presented the finest image possible. They have excelled throughout, and are richly deserving of the reputation they have fostered for themselves, the Navy, and HALEAKALA. As the Commanding Officer, it has beenrmy extreme pleasure to lead this exceptional crew through the many challenges of these events, and as this crew's book also shows, we had some fun along the way. With spirit, teamwork and devotion, the 1992-93 crew of the HALEAKALA made history. Proudly, I dedicate this crew's book', to the HAULIN' HAL's fine crew. Well done, one and all! . - Cecil D. She is the fifth and last ammunition ship constructed of the SUBIBACHI class. - USS HALEAKALA was designed and built at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard at Sparrows Point in Baltimore, Maryland. She was commissioned on 03 November 1959 and modernized in the mid 1960's. Since 1984, she has been incrementally equipped with new, modular style berthing arrangements which provide a very comfortable living environment for the crew. In January 1991, berthing modifications were completed to let women serve on board, allowing HALEAKALA to join a select group of ships of the fleet that have a portion of the crew that are women. Approximately twenty percent of the crew is female. HALEAKALA is a Combat Logistics Force ship, designed to deliver ammunition and fuel to other ships of the fleet at sea. She has ten replenishment stations from which she can simultaneously transfer or receive fuel, ammunition, water, freight, mail and passengers to ships on either or both sides. HALEAKALA also has the capability to conduct vertical replenishment from her flight deck. She has deployed several times to the Western Pacific and saw extensive service during the Vietnam Conflict and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Since October of 1986, HALEAKALA has been home ported in Apra Harbor, Guam, where she is a member of the overseas Family Besidency Program. HALEAKALA is a permanent unit of the SEVENTH FLEET. 9
