One example is the Workhorse of the West Pacific, the ammo ship the USS HALEAKALA QAE 25y. Haleakala, which literally means, House of the Sun is the crown of the Hawaiian island of Maui, and the largest dormant volcano crater in the world. Haleakala National Park encom- passes 28,665 acres, and the crater itself is 21 miles in circumference and 19 square miles in area. At its deepest it measures 3,000 feet from the summit. The two towers of Manhattan's World Trade Center could be stood end to end and not reach the top. The crate-r's starkness is overwhelming, and more than anything else, entering it is like descending to the moon. It is easy to understand why, in the early days of our nation's space program, moon-bound astronauts trained in this desolate place. There are several species of creatures, and plants, that are found nowhere else on earth. One of these is the strange and delicate silversword. The silversword, a spiny, metallic-leafed plant, once proliferated on HaIeakaIa's slopes. Today it suwives only in small num- Q bers. These plants live up to 20 years, , tlff ' 1 H 1 1 f 11 p3gf1,'y'fr,1g1'11 xx ff' ' 1 1 , , 4. , 1 1 ,.11a 4 1 f Y 4 J rr ' y 'A '1 1 111+ 1 M 1 1 1 N- 'N1.1 4, ' ,A V V bloom only once scatter their seeds and ...., 1 , 1 ' . This crew's book hallmarks an outstanding cruise as well as an historically unique period in the life of HALEAKALA. Since 1986, we've been fonNard deployed to Guam, a ship that is always on the go for numerous but brief, voyages. The opportunity to long-term deploy for the first time since 1981, came as a real treat, quite extraordinary to ourroutine mission. The professional, dedicated efforts of your spouses, sons and daughters have transformed that opportunity into overwhelming success in support of our nation's policies. As hardworking sailors, stalwart citizens, and sterling ambassadors of our country in foreign lands, this crew has presented the finest image possible. They have excelled throughout, and are richly deserving of the reputation they have fostered for themselves, the Navy, and HALEAKALA. As the Commanding Officer, it has beenrmy extreme pleasure to lead this exceptional crew through the many challenges of these events, and as this crew's book also shows, we had some fun along the way. With spirit, teamwork and devotion, the 1992-93 crew of the HALEAKALA made history. Proudly, I dedicate this crew's book', to the HAULIN' HAL's fine crew. Well done, one and all! . - Cecil D. She is the fifth and last ammunition ship constructed of the SUBIBACHI class. - USS HALEAKALA was designed and built at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard at Sparrows Point in Baltimore, Maryland. She was commissioned on 03 November 1959 and modernized in the mid 1960's. Since 1984, she has been incrementally equipped with new, modular style berthing arrangements which provide a very comfortable living environment for the crew. In January 1991, berthing modifications were completed to let women serve on board, allowing HALEAKALA to join a select group of ships of the fleet that have a portion of the crew that are women. Approximately twenty percent of the crew is female. HALEAKALA is a Combat Logistics Force ship, designed to deliver ammunition and fuel to other ships of the fleet at sea. She has ten replenishment stations from which she can simultaneously transfer or receive fuel, ammunition, water, freight, mail and passengers to ships on either or both sides. HALEAKALA also has the capability to conduct vertical replenishment from her flight deck. She has deployed several times to the Western Pacific and saw extensive service during the Vietnam Conflict and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Since October of 1986, HALEAKALA has been home ported in Apra Harbor, Guam, where she is a member of the overseas Family Besidency Program. HALEAKALA is a permanent unit of the SEVENTH FLEET. 9 i f ' -. J N' , . .- wo, ,- Z,-fg1..:,:-'. 't:'. ' -. :ff-. : ' -' .- Q E J N Ti 1 A ' . r , gy... . . It rs well known that the ceremony 1 I rve orms, such as when ships crossed the thirtieth parallel or going through the Straits of Gibralter. The early ceremonies were of the roughest kind and designed to a great extent to test the Crew to determine whether or not the novices on their first cruise could endure the hardships of life at sea. ln time it has grown to the custom we know today, 3 rite Of Passage for those crossing the equator for the first time And a ship's party. The legend for our current tradition of crossing the line goes something like this: ' lt came to- pass that Davy Jones and King Neptune were sitting around one day popping down San Miguel beer. They were discussing the various problems of ruling their respective kingdoms. Davy Jones was ruler of the northern seas and Neptune the monarch of the southern latitudes. This was the way it had been since time began. , Each of the rulers had problems with their own kingdoms. Too much ice inthe north, not enough in the south. Winds that blew one way rn the south, blew the opposite in the north. Too hot in the south and too cold in the north, etc. The problem they both shared though had to do with population. Each was very tired of the same old subjects. The same old critters, the pretty me-rmards getting older, and the older mermaids getting really ugly. No new friends t.o make because each knew all the subjects too well after a millinium of living together. Well, some hours passed, and the rack of San Miguels empties got bigger and bigger. Somewhere between telling bad light bulb jokes and remembering when, a deal between the two monarchs was fallen into. King Neptune, being a real king, would rule the watery kingdom below the surface of the oceans. Davy Jones in turn would rule all the ocean's floors of the seven seas. The deal was struck over the last San Miguel and plans were made to seal the bargain. ln order for the subjects of the north and south to greet their new rulers, it was decided that all hands would pass the eqnatiprhatj certain porntt. TIE first half of the dayi subjects passed in review on one side of the world, and the second ha o e ay was spen on e exac opposr e si e. All was going real well The proper respects being shown. Davy Jones commented on the mermaids as only he could. King Neptune was all aglow thinking about his new subjects. As the day was drawing to a close, King Neptune suddenly stood up and yelled, Halt! The scream so startled Davy Jones that he knocked over his beer, dropped the two mermaids sitting on his lap, and he clumsily jumped to feet to see what all the clamor was all about. King Neptune was standing and pointing at a group of creatures approaching the reviewing stand. They were coming out of the northern hemisphere traveling south. What in the name of the seven seas is this slimy, lowly, foul-smelling group of creatures, Davy Jones? King Neptune demanded. Davy Jones looked out to see what had caused the king to be so upset. His eyes fell on none other than the Pollywog. Your majesty, Davy replied, these are my lowest of subjects. They are dim-witted, slow to learn, smelly, indeed slimy and ugly, but all are good subjects. I will not allow these little creatures into my kingdom, Davy Jones. All deals are off! Return to your side of the equator and never foul my doorstep again with such vile vermin! shouted King Neptune. Now Davy Jones, already full of San Miguel beer and having taken a fancy to several new mermaids, quickly decided something must be done to keep all bets on. He stepped in front of King Neptune, bowed, and said, Your majesty, perhaps we could do something to assure you that the lowly pathetic pollywogs are worthy to pass over the equator into your kingdom. King Neptune stroked his long grey beard and pondered his answer. He slowly rose to speak. I think that we can make the creature beautiful to the eye. This will be our first test as partners Davy Jones. Together we can do it. I declare that these creatures shall have a decorative outer coating. We will have a special ceremony, and if any of these lowly creatures can pass the rigors, tests, trials and inspections l have in mind, then they will be provided with this decorative shell. lt must cover their bodies so only their arms, legs and heads might be visible and, once earned, will grant them free access to my full watery kingdom. They will be known as shellbacks, and by virtue of their tests, will have earned the right to be my honored sons and daughters, and heirs to the seven seas. So the mass of creatures that dwell the oceans of the world sat for days and weeks, devising tests and rigors so formidable only the most worthy pollywog would ever earn his shell. And when the ceremony was conducted, only the most worthy did. Good to his word, King Neptune declared all the new shellbacks his very own adopted sons and daughters, and Qranted them the run of all the seven seas, and his most favored eye and protection wherever they roamed. Because of their special favor and consideration, he tasked the shellback with only one important task ....To 'test any and all other pollywogs who may desire to travel to his southern realms in accordance with hrs rules of the first initiation of shellbacks. Happily and respectfully, his new sons and daughters agreed without objection. n Today, the heirs of Neptune continue the task of initiating only the most worthy oflpollywogs into the honored order of shellbacks. The ceremony retains much of the traditions and discomforts of the first and is certainly as picturesque. Although The physical discomforts aren't near what they were in days gone by, the inflrCtIODS are Sllll CIGHHSINQ In nature and Serve the same purpose. Those pollywogs who survive, are welcomed happily into the order, and become true sons and daughters of Neptune. 119 f I r i.
