The name meansuhouse of the sun . The volcano is famous for the silversword, a rare cactus which grows in its crater. The silversword has been adopted as a part of HALEAKALA's official emblem. ' A USS HALEAKALA was designed and built at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard at Sparrows Point in Baltimore, Maryland. She was commissioned on 3 November 1959. The--ship is 512 feet long has a beam of seventy two feet, and has a full load displacement of 16,500 tons. She is propelled by a single screw at a maximum speed of twenty knots. Her ship's company is made up of about 300 enlisted men and twenty four officers. A , . HALEAKALA is a Combat Logistics Force ship, designed to deliver ammunition and fuel to other ships of the fleet at sea. She has six replenishment stations from which she can simultaneously transfer fuel, ammunition, water, freight, mail and passengers to ships on both sides. HALEAKALA can also conduct vertical replenishment from her flight deck. ' Since October of 1986, HALEAKALA has been homeported in Apra Harbor Guam where' she is- a member of the Overseas Family Residency Program. HALEAKALA is a- permanent ,unit of,the SEVENTH Fleet. A .
