We were stationed at Subic Bay and from there we ventured out to the gun line off the coast of South Vietnam and Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin. i On seven such line swings HALEAKALA delivered some 9,000itons of ammunition. fleet freight and mail to over 100 ships of the U.S. Seventh fleet. We serviced ships ranging in size from the giant nuclear powered attack carrier Enterprise to the tiny patrol gunboat Asheville. And we transferred items varying in weight from a 7,000 pound aircraft engine to a ten pound container of ice cream. The officers and crew enjoyed many variations of the Far Eastem culture, from the Philippines to Hong Kong and Japan. We found that each place had something to offer, and we take many memories with us back home. . This book is more than a collection of faces and places - it is like a family album, for each offus gave a big part of himself to the ship and his shipmates. What we take away from this cruise is no more than what we put into it during seven long, hustlinglmonths in WESTPAC. 1 I S Q 1 E , Us is 5 Q Xe Q X X K. ffgwfsxj .,- , UNDERWAY FOR WESTP C Last Load on the Pier at Concord, California. . ,MWA swW4 W-1:Wmxfw'WewM W ' , fa -e , xfallx QVC X Z? 5 f War!
