It began on a grey sad day in March and ended on a grey happy day in November. In between, there were 243 days, all sorts of days. There were days of work and days of liberty. There were days in Hong Kong and Taiwan and there were days in the Philippines. There were sunny days at sea and rainy days in Subic. There were hot days and even some chilly days. There were times on Yankee Station when we UNREPPED two carriers and many de- stroyers in a single day but there was one time when we UNREPPED only four ships in ten days. There was the time we transferred 150 tons per hour to the CONSTELLATION but there was also the time we transferred only 150 pounds per hour to the BARATARIA. There were times when we steamed at twenty knots but there were times when we couldn ' t steam at all. No one was too excited when we had our operational readiness inspection in Hawaii but when we were surrounded by unidentified boats in the Gulf of Tonkin there was no one who had not manned his GQ station within 60 seconds. There were times when the seas were glass-smooth and there were times when we could not even stand up, but no matter what the weather was like, our jobs remained. Some days were routine, some were frustrating, many were rewarding, but no matter what else each day was to us, it was always one day closer to home. During those 243 days we established a proud record. In seven trips to the line we rearmed 172 ships and transferred 12.964.6 tons of ammunition. In addition, we gave mail, movies, freight, passen- gers, and water to many of those ships. This book shows us estab- lishing that record. 94 Index Abrams, R G Abrams, R, D, Abucoy, D M. Alfred, W.
