Just missing the mark of Semi-Finalists and receiving Letters of Commendation were Don Aubry, James Johnson, Ruth Peycke, Joe Reese, Connie Robb, Scott Schad, and Kelly Smythe. Not limited to books and brainstorms, they were all exceptions to the rules of academic excellence. Jon Greaves I Y Q 4 i Bags' State Girls' State lt was called an experiment in politics. Experimenting to see if a wild bunch of high school seniors could learn American politics in one week. We attended government classes and lectures and ran for some Micky Mouse office that we had to write down to remember. But we learned what it took to run and what it took to win. While hundreds of Girls' Staters were tearing their hair trying to find some guys in Stillwater, all those Boys' Staters were going to play Rate-a-chick in Talequah. After we left we felt America wasn't quite the same. We learned somethingf we weren't sure what. But if the Stars and Stripes could send shivers up our spines now, that was something new. l l l Joe Reese, Shelly Schumacher, Mary Ann Gurkowski, Lynn Seaton. 19 DECA Sweetheart Linda Loman, Sweetheart Jana Crab, Karen Fasel. After a grueling day of conferences with parents, teachers, students, and other members of the community, the sandman yet found Mr. Smith involved with people. Through the Guideright program of Kappa Alpha Psi, he helped high school and college-age boys to plot their careers, and through his work with the Shriners, he worked to help crippled children in a St. Louis hospital. He also tried to find summer employment for underprivileged kids, guided poverty-stricken people to the organizations which could help them and spent time with the aging, in attempts to make their lives meaningful. ln addition, he was active with the Downtown Kiwanis Club and the NAACP, but still found time for moments of grandfatherly tenderness. For we gently led by the hand 703 innocent babes ready to try their wings. We helped go find colleges and employment, figured rankings, arranged meetings between students and admissions officers, walked throughlthe mire of applications and interviews, and administered the SAT, ACT, and all the other scholarship qualifying tests. But in the spring when our job was finished, and the fluff was dry, we could only pray for their success and hope we had helped. Mrs. Bernice Smith Mrs. Essie Deal. 3 ,. From the A : l4's and interest surveys in early September to the ordering of announcements and name cards in December to the sizing of caps and gowns in January to the senior Assembly ot the end of Moy, we were the advisors, teachers, and pals patted together into one conglomeration named Senior Homeroom Teachers. Varsitg Football Fresh, and with an All-City championship under our belts, our opener against Washing- ton was what we waited all week for - and what 12000 people came to see. Scoring once in the first period, and once in the second, Washington's 14-0 at halftime was about all they had. As we came out storming and steam- ing in the third, a new game took form. Stephens hit Grubb with a 27-yard touchdown package. The Hornets failed to get a single first down in the second half. Stephens came back in the fourth quarter with another touch- down pass, this one to Kauffman, and again our two-point conversion failed. A field goal attempt with 40 seconds was wide, and a Hornet g i ' fumble in the final seconds was recovered by 'A A- s sti' csis ,as A ' Mark Colclasure, but the ball was taken away A ,bi if i f , tg and given to the Hornets. Opening our annual rack-them-points-up contest against East Central with a sky of blue balloons, we penetrated through the buttery Cardinal defense, with Brumble scoring first, triggering a rapid fire succession of touchdowns. Rollins followed with a 25 yard scoring run from a Cardinal kick- off fumble. Stephens' aerial attack pushed his former Cardinal teammates back, as he personally scored twice. Even the defense got into the act, with Colclasure recovering a blocked Cardinal punt, scooping it up for a score, as the reserves infiltrated the second quarter. At halftime, we had a slight edge over the flawing red birds - a 35-0 score, and a 224 rushing mark up against -l O, with East Central still shucking for a first down. Hale 41 East Central 7 Ponca's Wildcats were undefeated on four counts. They were bigger than we were, but not smarter. Starting it off with Kauffman's 27 yard TD run, we didn't quit pounding till the clock ran out. The sky-high, lethal defense of Welsh, Grubb, Colclasure, Wyatt, and Brumble plagued the Wildcats both on the ground and in the air. With Brumble scoring, we led at halftime l 3-0, but remembered last year's turn-about we had given Ponca when they had the same score. Brumble blockbustered his way through to hit another score, and Roy Harrison snatched a Wildcat pass that led to Stephens' TD. Brumble capped the night's scoring with an impressive scramble, shattering Ponca with its first loss. Hale 34 Ponca City 0 Traveling away from the home turf of Skelly to La-Fortune set the battlefield on red clay against Memorial's red, white and blue cake-eating brigade. Scoring in the first quarter with a one- yard pushover from Brumble, the boards were immobilized until the third quarter when Brumble struck again, this time accompanied with a downfield block by Rob Kauffman, giving Brumble 7l yards home free, with a i3-0 lead. As if Brumble's l 56 yards of rushing were not enough, Rollins heisted a Charger pass, putting a devastating touch to Memorial's Homecoming. Zonking the team that had been picked by a certain Tulsa newspaper to be co-champs in the lndian Nation conference with us was the high point of the night, with the only downfall coming from a certain manager, who, by some odd chance, wound up at the bottom of a sewage ditch. Hale 20 Memorial 0 Illness, of an undetermined nature, hit its highest peak previous to the Rogers game. The invisible foe had sapped strength from both starting lines, and substitutes were everywhere. Bringing in a 3-0 record into the game, a victory would give us a berth in the State Play-Offs. A scoreless first half led to a pep talk from the Bear that put our goal into action. Bursting up the middle, Boley, substituting for Kauffman, plunged headstrong into the Roper defense, giving us a six point lead over Rogers. Brumble scored seconds later on a Roper fumble, scrambling fifty-eight yards into the end zone. The crowd of ten thousand strong watched on as we wrapped the ropes around Rogers. Stephens rolled on for two more scores, leaving Rogers tangled in knots. Hale 27 Rogers 7 With Brumble sidelined with a fractured wrist, his heir apparent was Kauffman, who wrecked the Eagle defense for three touchdowns. Homecoming had been moved from LaFortune to Skelly, where it should be, and it was Saturday night, making this game a special game at every angle. And we scored at every angle, whether it be in the air, onthe ground, offensively or defensively. Hoff intercepted an Edison pass, and scrambled 60 yards untouched. Stephens hit Bippus and Rollins for his two touchdown iewels, clearing away Edison's hopes and adding a special ingredient into a night that had mixed into it blue balloons, Queen Cathy, plucked Eagles, and a Ranger roast. Hale 39 Edison 20 35 510 W ibm 's 6 A week of rain had left its mark on Webster Stadium, where Central decided to play us instead of postponing the game which could be made up Saturday night, at Skelly. They said playing us in the mud would be to their advantage. It sounded crazy, but we'd play 'em anywhere - and beat 'em. An early field goal put the Braves in a 3-O lead, but the lead was cut short when Stephens connected with a familiar target, Bubba Hoff, for a 7-3 take-over. Stephens continued his pounding air attack, practically blowing up the Central defense. An 84 yard drive was capped with a 20 yard throw to Rollins. The defense had stifled the Brave's War Dance, and it being Halloween, we treated Central to a defeat. Hale l4 Central 3 Hitting the road toward the boring plains of Enid, the cool mixture of rain and wind seemed to dampen the spirits of everyone. Our buses of fans, following their usual routine, were late, some arriving seconds before the game began. The Plainsmen, battling for a play-off berth in the State Finals, perked twice in the first half, bringing to mind the mythical Enid curse, and to their locker room, a l2-O lead. Our third quarter score was brought about by Colclasure intercepting a Plainsmen pass, with Stephens taking it in. Penalties and the dogged strategy of Enid took us home with our lone conference defeat. Hale 6 Enid 21 ll NBER5 f-.1-w A battle against the Scots of McClain was set as our last game of regular season play. Putting up one touchdown in the first quarter, and a second quarter, we took a l4-O lead into the half-time. A stirred up Scot offense and defense made the second half a lot rockier than we had anticipated. Scoring once in the fourth, then driving all the way to our eight yard line, time ran out for the Scots, as our iniury list seemed to perk up again, this time taking center Jeff Polk and receiver Bubba Hoff. Brumble had returned, displaying a large bandage on his iniured wrist. The season had ended on a 7-2 record. Now for the State Championship Title . . . Hale T4 McClain 7 Scrambling onto the turf that had so many of our victories embedded in it, the quarter-finals had us put up against Altus, a team that everyone was trying to guess where they came from. Strangers to us, but not to the game of football. A first quarter Bulldog lead led to a 7-7 tie at the half. Stephens put the attack to the sky, his passes complete on almost every account. The Stephens-Bippus formula was put into effect, and the third quarter ended with a I4-14 reading. A fourth quarter Altus attack resulted in a 20-l 4 score, with four minutes to go. But Brumble came through, galloping a two yard measure, and along with Welsh put us in the lead with a 21-20 score. Then the Strangers struck . . . Woefully, the fans on both sides feared the outcome, with ten seconds left, Altus set up for a field goal that went perfectly through the posts. The bellowing fog horn marked the end of the game, end of a season, end of a team. Our duty accomplished, we strayed away, each absorbing the season in his own way, but all being able to say, we were there. As the sun set in its western abode, our thirty weary bodies finished a long trek. During the daily work-outs, five miles a day was our prescription. When our iourney was completed, Coach Chunk was pleased more often than not. At each race the impossible had to be endured if we were to emerge victorious. And that we did, though there was no school body to support our actions. Nine victories against no defeats in duels was our record despite the sparse encouragement, proving what we already knew, that our will and determination could accomplish anything we desired. ln August we started putting all rules into but one statement. Give all you got, and then some. The leaves turned gold and fell, but we did not. We kept to our rule, preparing ourselves for Coach's final goal, to take the State Championship once again Don't call us locks, call us individuals. 'kwnfijfl The duels were tough but the invitationals were the meat of the action. The invitationals were McLain l2ndl, Midwest City l4thl, Bartlesville l5thl, Edison l3rdl, Rogers ll stl, and OSU i2ndl. ln late October the Conference meet came, passed, and we placed second. At Area we slipped by in tough action to capture fourth place. Then in the second week of November, on a very chilly and wet Saturday morning, we greeted the Day of Judgment. After trudging three miles through soggy grass we listened nervously for the results. Then the loud-speakers blared out, Nathan Hale, State Champions. 2 N-Q.,ff , ' ,ig Q ,pg , fr-ww-f' - ' tx: L ,Lgv ,-X if gi' . izQ . Our voices soloed out where Mrs. Carver's prompting couldn't help us. But when the last spotlight had dimmed and we were left standing alone, we knew we had something left that Nellie Forbush couldn't wash out of her hair Bloody Mary couldn't sing out of hers, and Luther Billis couldn't swindle out of his. . . that insidious fraternity that crept in during the curtain calls, that bound us together under a hard duress and starry success. Sparkling with a cast of four seniors delivering their last performances, four iuniors making their second debuts, and four sophomores who lust didn't know better. Boring rehearsals? With Leehan's wet pants, Graff's ever-present grin, ci near brawl with stagecraft, a Jimmy Stewartish Elwood, Ron's everflowing curses, and an invisible rabbit leading us through weeks of rehearsal, our funny moments of clowning around were actually too many in number to get away with. Seen by the largest crowd in over four years, ticket sales zoomed past six hundred. Sure, we boasted, but we called it good foresight - after all, we had a good rabbit to pull out of the hat. Putting on afplay abdigit every actolfiis dreams - W X Hollywood. As the curtains parted on opening night, they officially closed our five weeks of crammed rehearsal in which we practiced to be somebody else for two twilight performances. We were the ones who missed the cues, forgot the lines, smuggled cokes into the auditorium, conquered theiflu, and popped pain pills. Apathy? Who cares! We raked in a profitable crowd and accepted for our pay the tribute we had worked, fought, laughed, and cried for - a standing ovation. o J x K 'FL Reginae Aq uae We were twenty-two bathing beauties, preparing the whole year for one really big extravaganza. You may think that's rather crazy, working all that time for a couple of shows in March. Well, if you saw the show you'd know it was worth every bit of that water we swallowed. We proceeded with practice fifth hour every day of every week each school day, under the guide of advanced swimming. Hale Marching Hundred Whatever anybody said, they couldn't argue against the fact that at least we were the most audible group in the school. The first question anyone asked about us was Who all gets in HMH? We're everyone in the instrumental department except violins and the like. Some of us made up the Jazz Band and a lot of us were in symphony, and some us, well, we were just us. So it goes. We unfurled the first silks Hale spectators had seen in our marches. A lot of people assumed that we had exactly lOO marchers. For your information, it was more like 120, five score for you Abe Lincoln fans. During those freezing days in the fall, we got to school at 6:45. Why? We cared. Supreme rivalry was achieved between Blue-Silver. But to prevent stirring up emotions we won't mention that Blue won. The big event, the Cotton Bowl, was achieved by raising money in a myriad of ways. New Years in Dallas was spent at a hotel party, followed by obscene phone calls from a certain sax player. Finally topping the year off, Carolyn Schad was christened Miss Nahaban. .. Q 'kg W' , WX if Q 5 gg, 1 48 ,if .K :N ,X ,. , A , U yd . Even though the staff rarely stayed in the room for an entire class, we published the Lone Ranger fourteen times, including our gala l2-page Christmas edition. Our editor-in-chief was a rookie, the layout editor was a pacifist, the head photographer. . . well, he tried. As the year progressed, we learned more about newspapers, composition, photography, and each other. When the quality improved, the emotions rose. We escaped the yelling and screaming by leaving early to get an ad .1er'rr rf , ... i f if in 1 I T Wk .. WX .0 or by hiding behind the closed doors fivi of the prayer or dark rooms. We tossed out tradition when it was convenient, had our Christmas party at Peppe's, wt- we sa.. . and outlawed poetry, especially Tony's. The trips to the Broken Arrow printer were scorned by teachers and students alike. if Ever got three parking tickets in one day? We managed to publish in spite of the printer. Lone Ranger was a part of us, a way of life during the year. Without it, we might have retained our sanity, but we could never have known this school in the special way we now perceive it. iq., mm 20 O8 Patriot We played basketball in the halls and dreamed up Missions iust to be out running around. That was us, all right. Twenty-one iokers and two sophomores. But ninety percent of the time the gags were all that stood between us and Vinita. lt wasn't easy to pluck out the events that could symbolize this year. So we burned the midnight tungsten and sacrificed our holidays. Cathy Carey, Editor When the copy didn't fit and the pictures wouldn't crop, we lust cried on our French Fries and tried again. We soon realized that we couldn't please everyone. So we tried to please ourselves. Nothing came easy. Except crises, that is. No matter what precautions we took, deadlines always caught us off guard. Or out in the halls. Indeed, quote the master, lt's deadline time again, and they're all gone! Football Cheerleaders We enjoyed the profits of hard work by placing high in competition, but our common problems made us close. After all, we suffered the ridicule of some of our peers, learned the threat of weekly incidentals, and occasionally had to vie with the band lust to be heard. And no longer did our pleated skirts and lettered sweaters earn us that junior-high social status. But we always pulled through with our senses of humor and optimism intact. So give us along, H-A-I-L R-A-N-G-E-R-si Front: Carol Wasson, Annette Fisher, Kim Arnett. Back: Janet lng, Ann Turner Basketball Cheerleaders We covered Basketball and Wrestling. Not quite so prestigious a chore as football cheerleading. The crowds were smaller, and the gyms echoed. But the spirit was the same, the games iust as good. We had a hard time making it to all the games, and out of five, each one of us counted. But what really counted was the feeling we got. We knew it was good. I ffl, Ifg, YJ Health Careers We're dedicated to life, liberty, and health. We looked to the future, and saw that the medical field was getting more and more specialized. We found the things that interested us and learned about them, preparing us to help, at some later date, some sick soul. Patriet-tes New uniforms and shiny shoes. Our blue and gray pom-poms declared us Patriettes. We learned Hail to the Rangers by heart in Sunday afternoon practices. We came before the crowds each Friday evening and performed dutifully at each and every football game. We ushered at plays, concerts, and Back-to-School night. We rang bells at Christmastime for the Salvation Army. We gave a party for the kids at Childrens Medical Center. We took tickets at basketball games. We gave a Thanksgiving dinner to a needy family. We even let people throw pies in our faces at the Halloween carnivals. And after all that, people still asked, Demo - what? Our immediate answer was, Demoiselles is a girls' service organization. But we each knew it was more than that. lt was one place where we were sure to always find people who sincerely cared about helping other people. A gathering of light hearts and honesty. Friends to turn to when the world seemed too self-serving and plastic to bear. Friends with which to share moments of humor. A private haven of sincerity for 60 girls. Intramurals So what could two thousand fun-loving American teen-agers do for vim and invigoration? After all, ninety-seven percent of us didn't quite cut Varsity, and we were getting tired of warming benches on the spectator side. So we banded together by homerooms to show our techniques lnot to mention physiquesj. We wollowed in the dewdrops tagging footballs, and tugging-on- wars, and we forsook the sack for the sake of ping-pongs. Saturdays caught us at Good Times foosballing, or striking and guttering in search ofthe pins. Then the women's lib infiltrated the gym lthe volleyballs let 'em ini. Of course, meeting on school time helped that. But even yet, we felt encouraged. Our main problem was communication. Even with the spiffiest of planning and sign-painting on any one activity, it always seemed that at least 2,000 kids had never heard of it. Candy sales dropped after two weeks or so, the Christmas post office barely paid for its own crepe paper, and the canned food drive died of inattention. But enough pessimism. We succeeded enough times to outweigh the failures. Fifties Day was a boffo success. The faculty talent show went off well, too. And Boy and Girl of the Month elections never slipped up. All in all, we did okay. We weren't perfect, so we made mistakes. Big ones, sometimes. Small ones, lots of times. But our goal - to unite 2500 Rangers in one organization - was really beyond reach. But we tried. We got closer to it. So we must have succeeded. Some people didn't even know we were a club. Even some of our members didn't seem to be aware of the fact. To some, we were iust another honor to go on college scholarship applications. To others, we were iust another club meeting to take up time before school started. But to many of us, NHS meant not only early-morning meetings, but also late-night pizza and skating parties. Those of us who participated found that a 3.5 average earned more than a place on the Honor Roll. Officers pictured on book cover. First Row, L to R: Janelle Patton, President, Dana Moore, Secretary. Eleven chosen people Picked to choose the chosen. Under new organization and USA auspices, we didn't get underway until January. But we worked long and late hours to find the few deserving seniors lfrom a field of 700l worthy ofthe honored title Rangers-in-Review. But for us, it was an honor iust to be the choosers. Chess Club King's pawn takes Queen. Checkmatel No visible loss to be seen, to those who don't rate. But to us everyone rated. We're a bunch of eccentrics and we're proud of it. We had a tumultous year, impeaching a president who had no power. We kept ratings all year but no one cared where they stood. We just came to play and we enioyed it. We stormed Fayetteville in June for the National Mu Alpha Theta Convention, but Mr. Bubble got there first. We'd never been quite so involved in the mathematics of soap bubble before, or realized the immense intricacies of Fobibbochi numbers. For the rest of the lectures, we passed notes surreptitiously and caught up on all the sleep we missed at night. For when, Steve and Larry discovered that their keys fit the locks of all the rooms immediately above and below on each floor of the dorm, no one slept easily. The stories that resulted lasted for the rest of the year. They supplemented the afternoon hex games that Mr. Lutman taught us, and replaced planned club meetings. Our crusading president drummed up speakers to inform us of little-known mathematical wonders, but the highlights again this year were The Annual Lutman vs. Lutman, Rogers vs. Hale Math Club Volleyball and Basketball Championships with the losers treating the winners to a spring picnic at Lizzie's. 229 rench Club Our loves for French culture and American parties were the strings that bound us together and stirred the dormant Fannie Farmers and James Beards among us. Be we picnicing at LaFortune Park, dining at Chateau Latour, or gathering at one of our homes, the cuisine was always amazing and the company incomparable. Saturnalia! On the fifth day of December, we hosted other Latin freaks in a celebration, clad only in togas and tunics. lt is the Roman holiday called Saturnalia, our big event. lt's like Christmas and yet, it has nothing to do with it. We also ran around to elementary schools in search of future Latina Lingua prospects. Some liked to think of us as nonentities but we tried to show them that we are for real. We took the time to try to understand Spaniards beyond the simple Buenos diets in passing. 23l German Club Guten Tag. For all of you, who weren't German maiors, that meant, Good day. We had iobs which were strewn about the community. l That's part of our education l and our goal. To learn to exist in the world, was our main purpose. We associated with many employers who knew this education was probably more useful than most classroom lectures. l But some forgot we're a club. As a big organization we decided to plant trees for the community. We elected our semi-important officers as well as going to state l and national contests. l We're invisible to most but we knew that what we did was simply preparing us for the future. l l Christie Byrd, Sponsor, Diane Cox and Jim McKinzie, Outstanding Students of the Year. iii. Breaking the tradition of not putting onthe alumni tea, we put the initiations on in the proper manner, with eggs in the mouth and a special brew of catsup, tabasco sauce, Rebel cola, and mud. Tuesday's meetings at 7:30 may not have been attended by anyone but Greg, but it didn't matter because no one else would know. Scheduled to perform before the English department with a Shakespearean play, we got it done - just to say we did it. With points tabulatedvafter every performance, we'll try to hit Broadway, or n Hollywood. lt may lust be Aunt Gracie's den, but the show will go on - even if it's iust to say we did it. 7 FSA Sure, we had a Christmas party and sold candles again this year, but we also heard business professionals tell us about the status quo of secretarial conduct. We leaped into the real world with a lecture on pollution by an ONG representative. We dug beneath the dumb blonde stereotype only to find that the stereotype really wasn't there anymore. What was there was us. America's Secretaries of the Future. Even the name sounded like a promise. FHA We organized as the Future Homemakers of America, but we spent our afternoons and evenings, not absorbed in cheese souffles and dirty diapers but, in making people happy. Carols at Four Seasons Nursing Home and Christmas stockings for babes at Hillcrest were iust the start of a half-year of clear generosity. We weren't Suzy Homemakers: we ignored stereotypes. We simply wanted to use our knowledge of people to provide cheer. be at L 1. Seated, Left to Right: Kathy Brown, Melinda Copley. Front Row: Linda Thomas, Sheryl Setser, Pam Megill.
