The ideas of freedom and educafion are so inexfricably woven fogefher fhaf one can- nof exisf wifhouf fhe ofher. Whaf kind of educafion besf in- sures our freedom? Whaf kind of freedom besf insures our ed- ucafion? Wesfern man has been ask- ing himself such g u e s f i o n s fhroughouf hisfory for freedom is fhe nafural condifion of a so- ciefy which sfill seeks fo grow and mafure. Freedom is fhe precondi- fion of securing whaf men be- lieve fo be good-good for fhemselves, good for ofhers, good for mankind. To know fhe goods of fhe moral, infellecfual, and spirifual life is fhe aim of educafion. Educafion is fhen in- dispensable fo a free sociefy, for wifhouf an appropriafe edu- cafion, fhe mind of man is de- prived of fhe falenf and disci- pline fo search properly and in- felligenfly for fhe goods of life. 4 Whaf is honored in a counfry is cul fivafed fhere.
