1 Shirley A -1. Q31 Tarmotaeclter Meet Queen Shirley. Better known as Shirley Darmstaedf ter. Shirley was crowned Queen of the Bowling Green Invitational Basketball Tournament, which took place over the Thanksgiving holidays of 1953. She is the first girl from Hadley to be so honored. The voting was done by popular vote. The tournament started Thursday, in which Hadley met and defeated Farber. On Friday the Hornets defeated Fulton. The next day the Pep Club arrived and Shirley was placed on the list of candidates. That afternoon the basketball team defeated Wellsville. Saturday evening the team met Mont' gomery City. They made a fine showing but were defeated, thus giving the Hornets second place in the Tournament. After the last game the royal proceedings began. There were four other maids before the Queen entered. Everyone was very excited when it was announced that the Queen of the Tournament was to be Shirley Darmstaedter of Hadley Technical High School. She received a string of pearls, a trophy, a beautiful crown, which are on display in the trophy case. The Queen also received a huge bouquet of red roses. Shirley made a very excited, but poised, and pretty queen. She said afterward that she was very proud to be chosen the representative of the great school she is now attending. Qpauline, Qrunwald gor her eooay . . . Win or Lose - Hadley School spirit has to come from inside of you. You have to feel it to know it's there. No one is going to hand it to you on a silver platter and say, Here! Here is your school spirit. Do with it what you want. You and I both know this isn't going to happen, but that is what some students actually believe. You must join the various activities and clubs in the school. If you can't possibly join an activity, you can at least give Hadley your moral support by taking a personal interest and pride in it. The boys on the athletic teams get more encouragement and will try harder when they know they have their school in back of them. To go to school is one thing, but to know that you are a part of it and that you help to build its reputation is another. Some students work on Friday and Saturday and can't go to the basketball games. That's true, too, but don't forget there are different clubs that meet on a weekday: the Rifle Club, Bowling Club, Choir, and many others. Everyone knows that when they start working in the world they will meet many people. Joining some activity or club is an ex' cellent way to prepare yourself for your future life. So I say, let's start backing up our school now!! VJ in or Lose, this is our Hadley! I P5 If fir Y
