Q31 Tarmotaeclter Meet Queen Shirley. Better known as Shirley Darmstaedf ter. Shirley was crowned Queen of the Bowling Green Invitational Basketball Tournament, which took place over the Thanksgiving holidays of 1953. She is the first girl from Hadley to be so honored. The voting was done by popular vote. The tournament started Thursday, in which Hadley met and defeated Farber. On Friday the Hornets defeated Fulton. The next day the Pep Club arrived and Shirley was placed on the list of candidates. That afternoon the basketball team defeated Wellsville. Saturday evening the team met Mont' gomery City. They made a fine showing but were defeated, thus giving the Hornets second place in the Tournament. After the last game the royal proceedings began. There were four other maids before the Queen entered. Everyone was very excited when it was announced that the Queen of the Tournament was to be Shirley Darmstaedter of Hadley Technical High School. She received a string of pearls, a trophy, a beautiful crown, which are on display in the trophy case. The Queen also received a huge bouquet of red roses. Shirley made a very excited, but poised, and pretty queen. She said afterward that she was very proud to be chosen the representative of the great school she is now attending. He was chosen by the referees and officials for his demonstration of outstanding sportsmanf ship during the tournament. It is an annual award given by a merchant in Elsberry. Will wants everyone to know that this couldn't have been possible for him without the cooperation and good sports' manship of his team mates. During the week of january 23, 1954, Lackey was chosen as Prep Player of the Week. This contest is held weekly by Station KXQK, and the winner is chosen by popular vote. On Thursday, January 28, 1954, Will was interviewed by Franc Laux on his sports broadcast because of his winning. In March there will be a banquet given for all Prep Player winners including their coaches and principals. This award will be presented to Will at this banquet. He will also be eligible for the Prep Player of the Year Award. qoilfred fackey .X Qpauline, Qrunwald gor her eooay . . . Win or Lose - Hadley School spirit has to come from inside of you. You have to feel it to know it's there. No one is going to hand it to you on a silver platter and say, Here! Here is your school spirit. Do with it what you want. You and I both know this isn't going to happen, but that is what some students actually believe. You must join the various activities and clubs in the school. If you can't possibly join an activity, you can at least give Hadley your moral support by taking a personal interest and pride in it. The boys on the athletic teams get more encouragement and will try harder when they know they have their school in back of them. To go to school is one thing, but to know that you are a part of it and that you help to build its reputation is another. Some students work on Friday and Saturday and can't go to the basketball games. That's true, too, but don't forget there are different clubs that meet on a weekday: the Rifle Club, Bowling Club, Choir, and many others. Everyone knows that when they start working in the world they will meet many people. Joining some activity or club is an ex' cellent way to prepare yourself for your future life. So I say, let's start backing up our school now!! VJ in or Lose, this is our Hadley! I P5 If fir Y i ir y-'F fha oiceg o Hello! Fellow Americans! l 'am speaking on a great subject. As a young person of Amer' ica l feel most fortunate that l live in this land of Democra' cy. For under a Democratic government l have many valu' able privileges. We must not forget, that we have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people with equal rights and justice for all. We are all part of the grow' ing America. But the Amer' ica of tomorrow, will depend on what we learn and what we do now. We must learn oUR duties as citizens so that we can help the America of today. And we must study the HISTORY and FUNCTIONS of oua government. ln this way the America of tomorrow will have a brighter future. Guia Democracy has a strong foundation based on the prin' ciples of three great documents -the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of lndepend' ence and the Constitution of the United States. We ob' tained this way of life through the struggles of ouk forefath' ers, who had the faith, the courage, and the foresight to by Delbert Lee Dace fight and hold on to these prin' ciples so dear to their hearts and so important to their lives. Because of these great men of the past and the great men of today oUR Democracy is established and is thriving throughtout this land today. Now let me tell you about the freedoms of Democracy, that are guaranteed to us by the Bill of Rights in the Con' stitution of the United States. We have Freedom of Re' ligion. We are able to attend the church of OUR own choice. Because of this, we may see the beauties of God's law and feel the quickening power of His wonderful love. By this freedom l am given a broader faith, a brighter hope, and a stronger love for my fellow' man. We have Freedom of Speech. We have the freedom and the pleasure of expressing oUR own opinions about the government and its officials. These thoughts and beliefs of Democracy that l am voicing at this moment, are good ex' amples of this Freedom of Speech. We have Freedom of the Press. We have the freedom to emocrcacy -1953 Hadley Tech Winner express oUR own ideas in writ' ing. We also have a great se' lection of literature, from which we can choose oUR daily reading, OUR various newspapers and magazines print varied opinions and thoughts on subjects of imporf tance, in our daily lives in this country and the countries af cross the sea. There are no L.-YIWS keeping ME from read' ing books of my own choice, whether they be on history, comedy, or current events. We have the opportunity for an education. We have the opportunity to obtain a good education in well organized schools, taught by excellent teachers. I will graduate from high school soon and intend to further my education by going to college. This opportunity of education has not always been oURs. I am going to take ad' vantage of this opportunity, for without it, I would not be able to plan my future educa- tion. We have the choice of a career. We are free to plan OUR own career, doing the kind of work we wish. Choosf ing the field of employment in which oUR talents fit. We are able to quit a job when we think it is not suitable for us. I plan to follow the field of art as a career. With hard work and study, the help of my counselors and God's will I can achieve my ambition. We have Freedom in oUR Social Life.We ae free to make' our own friends and choose oUR entertainments. By being' friendly we GET acquainted socially with many different' personalities. We learn how to GET along with oUR fellow' men. In OUR American way of life I can choose my own en' tertainments. I can go on hay' rides, go to rollerskating par' ties or go to the movies, and I can compete in all types of sports. All of these freedoms which we enjoy are oURs to keep. They will be with us as long as we do not forget that this DEMOCRACY must be lived . . . IT must be understood, and rr must be fought for by the peof ple. I also remember what it stands for and what it has cost us. The cost is greater for those who loose these precious freedoms. Each morning when I arise I am thankful. I am thankful for living in this great land of DEMCCRAQY. I on t in W qfnioo cynurphy Cfnioo Qpaulette, Cn October 25, 195 3, a large group of Hadley's facf ulty attended a retirement party given to honor two of I-Iadley's teachers who had reached the stage of retire' ment. During the festivities, Miss Murphy and Miss Paulette were cited for their wonderful service to Had' ley in particular, and the teaching profession in general. The Flame and Steel wishes a long and pleasant retire' ment for Miss Murphy and Miss Paulette. Away from our friends, activities, and such Away from the school we love so much. Ready to go out into life seeking Truth Ready are we, this class of Youth. Excited and happy, yet afraid and so sad Each one of us thinking of the joys we have had. We are the students who now must depart We must go out alone, but with pride in our heart. Easy for others to say goodfbye Especially hard for us at Hadley High. Laughter and gaiety no more to enjoy-the Loveable smiles from each girl and boy. Leaving a school as great as this Leaving this school is woe not bliss. To graduate is a thrill, but yet To graduate from Hadley we all regret. Of course we are proud, but mostly we grieve Oh Hadley Tech., we dread to leave! Happiness, sadness, and tears we will show Hadley we love you, how can we go? W gfumcug., Qelationo elul: Better relations among humanity is truly a necessity in this world of turmoil. With better human relations, the bitterness and confusion that is thriving throughout this world today can be conquered. One way to conquer this confusion is to develope better relations amist the youth of the world. In this way, a better understanding among humans will grow with the youth of today, and the world of tomorrow will be a better place to live. The United States has started to embed better relations among the youths of America through the National Conference of Christians and Jews. The N.C.C.J. has established Human Relations Clubs in the high schools through out the United States. The main purpose of these high school clubs is to promote better relations among the students, the schools, and the com' munity. Hadley has such a Human Relations Club. Our club is considerably young compared to the clubs in the other schools throughout the city and county. Every year around Brotherhood week the Youth Conference of Greater St. Louis meets at Soldan Blewett High School for a full day of human relations. This great gathering of 2000 students of all races, creeds, and religions has been meeting annually for eight years. For the last four years, Hadley has been well represented by a fine group of students at this Youth Conference. The students from Hadley that attend this conference consist of members of the Human Relations Club. Hadley's Club is open to all students from freshmen to seniors. The club's able sponser is Mr. Statlerg he has been sponsoring the club for the last four years. 4 'f V A ' The president of the club is Delbert Lee Dace. Del is also on the steering committee that plans the Cityfwide Youth Conference. The secretary is Carol McGrath. This is Carol's first year in taking care of the club's notes. 7,6 ,,,, W 0 ff 0 352 G 'ly gi I itll . 22:3 , B .ai Q' 7, f fgg: , X - :T g !' .1 . barge? if V ,XF cpep eluls The Pep Club was organized in the fall of 1953 at the suggestion of Mr. Pitts. And now before our minds flash recollections of things which we have sometimes done badly. Through our years of study, as freshmen, as sophomores, as juniors, and as seniors too. We have gained an education of knowledge which we never dreamed of or knew. As freshmen we were small beings in the shadows of these great and stalwart walls. And now as seniors we have become stalwart and ready for all. yes, all jobs which we might encounter small or tall. Through our years at Hadley we have enjoyed many things quite well and through the years we have always waited for the dismissal bell. Oh yes! This bell which we have sometimes waited on to ring. It now reminds us of a sad thought with a loud tingfafling. For now the time of our departure draws near. As we come to the end of our last Hadley year. 9 ogutogrcapho CQ C9 1954 QQ 5 LETTERMENS CLUB Mr. Hutton Sponsor Will Lackey P1'cs1'dent Delbert Dame Vice Pvvsidcnt Duane Harbin 'I'1'casm'cT Shirley Darmsteadter Secretary lrxjrroclucirxq... That could well describe these girls you see at every game leading the crowd in a cheer for good old Hadley Tech. You can also see them at all Pep sessions. The captain of this highfspirited group is Judy Columbo, who is a June graduate. The Cofcaptain is Shirley Darmsteadter.
