THE VANISHING AMERICAN
Long years ago the Southwest was
inhabited by many tribes of Indians.
Among these flitted a nomadic people
-the Apaches, a wandering race of
warriors. The Apaches were a fierce
and proud people, proud of their tra-
ditions and their fighting men. They
prayed to ancient gods before setting
out on periodic raids against their
mortal enemies, the Comanches. On
the coming of the white men, the
Apaches struggled to maintain their
ways of life. They often fought
against overwhelming odds. In the
end, as anyone who watches television
knows, the Apaches lost. They were
forced to submit to another peopleis
traditions. They lost their individual-
ity, thus losing their pride.
