Girls' Varsity Soccer One game past the halfvvay marl-1 of the '84-85 season, the girls varsity soccer team is optomistic about becoming CCS Champi- ons. Says fourth year coach David Gold, We are right where we expected and deserve to be at this point - top of the league! After a disappointing league opener, a O-O tie with Poly, the Titans settled dovvn to win their next Q games, scoring oO and concede ing no goals. Highlighting the seoson's mid' point was the second matchup betvveen crosstovvn rivals. Before the game, Poly players hung a sign reading, The value of Gold has gone dovvn. Yes, Poly players vvere amused by their sign, cleverly putting dovvn the Gunn coach, but for only the first minute and 50 seconds, at which time Gunn scored its first of six goals. Gold comments with a lough, lt CGolds' value? is up by about six points, l do believe, PaIy's of- fense vvas able to score one goal, malsing the final score o-1, therefore brealsing the no goals against record Gunn had accumu' lated for over Q0 league games. CA record dating bocls to the '82 season? But the Titans remain undefeated in league play. The lady booters need only three more vvins to se- cure the S,C,V.A,L. title and both coach and payers are loolsing forvvord to the CCS Com- petition, Forming the backbone of the team ore senior Kristen Spiegel and sophomore Claire Walters, Cco-captainsb seniors Emilie Wilson and Kate Dixson, and sophomore Shirine Kharalsa. But Gold credits the team success to no one player, and says unity and teomf vvorls is the lsey, Gold comments, l've learned that soccer is a simple game mode difficult by coaches. I try to teach the simple game, but also add more technical aspects to get the entire team up to a greate men tol ability because soccer is a thinlsing man's game. Keeping the team as a whole at the some high level of performance is a main goal of the team, which vvill lead them, perhaps, to real GOLD , a CCS Championship, ew G
