1 '?'1 vnu-ha.. i. ae. ' . , M' ...1 The 1981 Varsity football team had a respectable season under first year coach, Len Doster. Although wins were scarce, the team was competitive and never gave up. They upset a strong Los Altos team, and knocked Santa Clara out of playoff contention with a 16-6 homecoming victory. Senior QB Chris Strausser showed poise and leadership in leading Gunn's inconsistent offense. Strausser, along with wide receiver John Chovanec, had record setting performances against a strong Wilcox team. Their season achievements earned them lst team all-league posi- tions. The offensive line led by Roger Campbell, Todd Handy, Bob Yetso, Paul Koestner, and sophomore Jim Yetso opened holes for a sporadic running game. Brad Elman, Doug Forbes, Mike Cohen, Dave Perry, and Chris Darden all interchanged in the fullhouse backfield. This year the backbone of the team was the defense. Secondary players Greg Roy, Andre Chapman, Mike Cohen, and John Chovanec guarded opposing receivers tightly, and were effective at coming up and stopping the run. The defensive line was fairly aggressive and put tremendous pressure on the opposing QB's. Campbell, Yetso, and Koestner did a good job plugging up the middle, while Carlos Herrera, Chris Darden, and second team all-leaguer Mike Lee, closed off the ends. Finding a good combination of linebackers was a problem, as Dave Perry, Paul Gabriel, Stan McAlister, Nick Sturiale, and Russ Light shuffled in. Overall, the coaching staff was pleased with what they called the first year of the rebuilding of the Gunn football program. ig--sn 'I ra ,sh X A' l,..g prev- -is-Rib. rr, ,.
