We lcnow that lacking vision people perish, Worthy aim forgot, they fail, And offices of beauty, strength, and valor, Are not cherished full without avail: We lcnow the course of runners must be forward, Light be passed if truth prevail, And we, united, pass our emblematic taper, bright, To all in Gulf Park questing for the grail. May memories of this our Alma Mater, Of this golden trysting hour, Inspire and sweeten every day of living As a glorious magnolia flower. May every hope and dream and aspiration, Given to us as our dower, Illuminate each heart and mind and guide us bravely on Until we move with wisdom and with power. -Willietta Evans. Having talked fast and hard about our vacation experi- ences, we put our heads together and tried to make some serious plans for rushing. XVe were too excited, however, to be very serious, so we carried our own hilarity into the theme of the first rush party- An Old Time Barn Dance . I only hope the new girls reveled in the western fun as much as we did. For weeks the stable hay clung to the corners of the Y hut where we had pitched it-for the occasion, and straw hats and gay bandanas became the prevailing mode. Faithful Delta Chi's still twang Billy The Kid and 'Tirst Lady Up in the Ring , as they go about the campus. Of course it wouldn't have done to have let the new girls think we were really Es- meraldasng therefore, the next week we resurrected last year's dignity, that appeared in excellent condition after such a long rest, and displayed it suavely at a dinner dance on the Markham roof which became a ship for the night. The time flowed by as smoothly and quickly as Louis Caron's music to which we danced. Maybe it was the power of the entrancingly bright moon that shone on the gulf so far below us, but at any rate our rushing was highly successful, and we became excited all over again about our new pledges. We eventually dropped our roles as gracious hostesses and put forth a grim front with which to face them. Starting with pledge night, we sat back with raised eyebrows while our black-stockinged rats made beds and ran errands. We held Court on the ath- letic field for those who didn't appear to appreciate our superiority. Solemn initiation closed their week of misery, and every heart glowed with a mutual recognition of its beauty and meaning. Ar the Thanksgiving banquet the three sororities sponsored a stunt which brought forth many chuckles from the participants as well as from the spectators. Our new sisters turned the tables twice around when they gave us a return party, a dinner dance at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel on February 3. They proved that among their many capabilities, they knew how to throw a party. Our dance on February 8 heralded Spring as well as celebrated Valentine's Day. We heard from an alumna that it was the most successful dance Delta Chi has ever held, and what more could we add? Welve only one regret about the entire year. That is we can't jump back to September and do it all over again. MARY KATHERINE ELAM. T l-I E S E A I ,Q PAGE se SIGMA PSI IOTA Miss DANELLE YATES . MARGARET HOMANS . But the vast number of attractive new girls imme- diately commanded our attention. Seeking an opportunity for getting acquainted, we gave a Candlelight Tea October 7, 1935, in the Art Studio. Our big rush party was a ban- quet, October 13, 1935, at the Miramar Hotel in Pass Chris- tian. The tables were attractively decorated in blue and silver, our sorority colors. Several favors and corsages were presented to each rushee . On October 20, 1935, we held our pledge service for fifty- one girls in the Senior sun parlor. What fun it was to make our rats, carrying out our slightest whims, walk the plank. And didn't they look weird in their red bows and black stockings! Finally the most important event, the sol- emn initiation, took place October 27 in the Senior sun parlor. Fifty-one girls were initiated. Several Sigma Psi girls took part in a stunt presented at the Thanksgiving Banquet. Our new members entertained us most royally at a dinner dance at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel February 1, 1936. Fa- vors and Valentine place cards marked each place. Between the courses of a delicious dinner we rushed madly out to the lounge to snatch a few dances. Plans progressed for a dance March 7, 1936, and trips to Ship Island and Inn-by-the-Sea during April and May. We wish to thank Miss Danelle Yates, our sponsor, for all her advice and aid during the year. It is with great regret that we see another happy year drawing to a close. EMLEY EREHART. Do you believe in love at first sight? No. Come over again tomorrow night. DO YOU As never in the past we keep kool until it time to retirev by riding in the car we bought because we asked the man who owned onen. In fact we get such a lifrn during that pause that refreshes that we think to our- selves, I feel as if I'd walk a mile for a Cameli' and then visit the house of courtesyv before returning home. Because we wish to guard the danger line we see our dentist twice a year . We start the day right by staying on the alkaline siden during the entertainment the night before. After tasting the difference we resolve to see our grocer tomorrow , to look for the date on the can , and to refuse substi- tutesn for the product we wish to buy. By such an act we guard the skin we love to touch and are being kind to our throats at the same time. As we sit and watch the Fords go byn, we suddenly decide to lose that fat and get rid of that tired feeling. The man who said, By their signs ye shall is JOKES I bumped my head on the piano last night. Were you hurt? No, I hit the soft pedal. Lou: Say, what can I do about my snoring? I snore so loudly I wake myself up. Bobbie: In that case I advise you to sleep in the other room. Jack: Darling, I love you as no one ever has beforef' Nickie: I can,t see any difference. Don,t bother me, I'm writing to Joe. But why are you writing so slowly? He can't read very fast. Germans name their battleships after jokes so the English won't see them. KNOW THEM? know them , was too advanced for his years, for he was able to see then what we are just now discovering in this period of high pressure sales- manship and advertising. In honor of his state- ment he should be acclaimed by advertisement writers near and far as their ranking number one national hero, their Washington, their Lin- coln, because today it is truly by their signs that we know them. Not only are they known by them to us, but to the people of other countries as well. They are printed not only in English, but also in foreign languages. The announcers on our radio pro- grams, sponsored by the companies that manu- facture these different things, use them to re- mind their listeners that they are offering this or that product for sale. Because of the re- turns they make in profits they do not want us to forget to try one of the 57 different varie- triesv or to keep the school girl complexionf, Elizabeth Abrahams T I-I E S E A G U I.
