Well, what do we find as we travel the high¬ ways and byways of secondary reality? Noth¬ ing, of course, but the brand passions and heights of individual fulfillment. And first . . . there ' s Love. Yes, Love. Glorious Love. The climatic all-consuming moment when boy meets girl and ring meets finger and the topsy-turvey world becomes steady. Watch, and you can see them in the halls, walking in ill-contained desiring steps as close as the load of schoolbooks will allow, twining arms and shining eyes but careful just in case some¬ one might be laughing, because you might be going too far or have picked the wrong one, and who ' s going to tell you but your friends? Or else defiant ( Who cares what you think? I ' ve got Love. ). Then the Moment ( I guess I ' ve got to say good-bye. Yes. Well . . . good-bye. Good-bye, and be careful. I will . . . you too. For you. Yes, will I see you after Phys. Ed? . . .). But the budding young reality-mongers must all too soon learn that even immortal Love can die. Then comes the parting in tears and hate and betrayal of carefully-nurtured faith. The return of the ring and the realization that this is the End. The End. And tomorrow in school when next you meet you must painfully watch the floor, and again in the days of sadness that follow until at last you can once more daily meet the eyes of the person from whom you have parted forever.
