It too has different and various forms, but what counts is that you ' re devout. We have, for instance, a certain idolatry of grades, those five holy letters that reach from above to twist and shape your very destiny. In the chapel and at home, on the wood- and-metal desks of the altars, you make the sac¬ rifices of time, work, sleep, and all the other things necessary to placate this angry god. A religion, perhaps not too lasting, but what mat¬ ters is if you ' re devout. Others find salvation in the Spirit. School spirit, that is. The Fans. Members of clubs, Watchers of games, ardent Participators in the ever-flowing lifestream of Events. They form a more durable sect, for, wherever they might wander, the PTA awaits! In addition, there are the countless splin¬ ter sects and minor heresies. Worshippers of the Party, Disciples of the Brawl, Seers, Prophets, High Priests. The list could go on. Then there are the agnostics and the atheists, stubborn in¬ dividuals who remain in aloof superiority and serene smugness. Not me, they say. 8 i 11 12 Roaring air over fighting mad plunging of frenzied cleated feet and padded protected bones straining muscle in wrenching effort of rushingly unleashed force from grinding collision to galloping mayhem with screaming surging pulsing crowd in the rhythm of ebb-and-flow victory urging commanding demanding a team interconnected confusion collectively working attempting together a goal a win in a security framework of team-mates friends fellow travelers enclosed surrounded but sometimes not always unwillingly stranded and gallantly standing . . . alone 13 14 15 Homecoming The time to set up the school for a small returning segment of times past, as the spectacle of sport and the pageant of beauty combine to form our homage to those who have passed on. The duly elected examples of our prime pulchritude who now wait in seated nervousness with slightly surprised escorting heroes, all wondering who will be the one who can jump for ecstatic joy as the reigning monarch of beauty. Time, and, of course, there ' s only one. But still the rest remain in honor and in their chosen faces keep and reflect the many-mooded facets of an honoring school. 16 17 From the carefree somnolence and comfortable niches of childhood we pass now into the unlimited im¬ mensity of awareness of the pos¬ sible. And now, in the in-between time before the possible becomes actual, we take the time to prepare for the well-known, brute-force re¬ ality with our own special version, which is a bit more easy to deal with. So we arm ourselves with some first and much second hand knowledge of that longed-for real world, and with all the skill and inexperience at our disposal, we fashion for ourselves a little practice world where we can try it on and see how it fits. Naturally, we are very selective about what we let into our world . Mainly it ' s those fascinating mysteries and attention-getters that we find after careful observation of our movies, magazines, and books. Then off we go and our world is carefully built in miniature and caricature and deadly earnest. 20 21 22 24 25 26 27 28 29 Well, what do we find as we travel the high¬ ways and byways of secondary reality? Noth¬ ing, of course, but the brand passions and heights of individual fulfillment. And first . . . there ' s Love. Yes, Love. Glorious Love. The climatic all-consuming moment when boy meets girl and ring meets finger and the topsy-turvey world becomes steady. Watch, and you can see them in the halls, walking in ill-contained desiring steps as close as the load of schoolbooks will allow, twining arms and shining eyes but careful just in case some¬ one might be laughing, because you might be going too far or have picked the wrong one, and who ' s going to tell you but your friends? Or else defiant ( Who cares what you think? I ' ve got Love. ). Then the Moment ( I guess I ' ve got to say good-bye. Yes. Well . . . good-bye. Good-bye, and be careful. I will . . . you too. For you. Yes, will I see you after Phys. Ed? . . .). But the budding young reality-mongers must all too soon learn that even immortal Love can die. Then comes the parting in tears and hate and betrayal of carefully-nurtured faith. The return of the ring and the realization that this is the End. The End. And tomorrow in school when next you meet you must painfully watch the floor, and again in the days of sadness that follow until at last you can once more daily meet the eyes of the person from whom you have parted forever. 31 The boys—surprising everyone with a sudden show of win. What makes them mend their dribbling ways, who knows? It is enough that we may call them ours. 1 i i And the girls—streaking to victory after victory. Roundball credits mounting up and up in a precarious tower of invinci¬ bility, higher and higher until a fall must hurt too much to bear and there ' s no place to go but up. 37 38 “ 1 - 39 Susan Schreck, Nat ' l. Four years waiting, working, shaking, making sure that what finally rises to the top is indeed worthy to be skimmed. All that glitters is not gold, you know, and true merit is rarer still. But, then, it ' s easier to be found. Read the record, examine the charts, compute! compute! and check the lists. And there it is. A little bit of the upside-down land come to see how things are in this topsy-turvy world bal¬ anced precariously on the other side of the globe. Sampling strangeness and maybe a little hemmed in by the press of curiosity, but then she ' s got a lot to be curious about too. A mutual regard, as we confer the honors of otherness on our vistor in whom, if all goes well, we might, much to our surprise, see a little bit of ourselves. 46 47 48 52 ACADEMIC CADEMIC S A ADEMICSAC DEM IC SACA EM ICS ACAD MICSACADE ICS ACADEM C S ACADEM I ACADEM IC ACADEMICS ADMINISTRATION Eugene R. Onward must they march, these keepers of the public trust from whose broad brows no burden slips. In their zeal for the common weal, they roll steadily from room to room, dragg¬ ing with them the administrative weight of re¬ sponsibility. Hawklike eyes search everywhere for that most elusive of school spirits; traplike hands seek valiantly to drag it from the murky depths; and the voices, with monotonic semi-coherency, surge relentlessly through the halls in a hopeful song of praise. Bring a smile to the face and a cheer to the lips and the battle is half won. Thus, in eager simplicity, the ministerial minions flow in and around our lives, to leave behind the im¬ pression of something gone. Members: First Row: J. Fitzsimmons (V. Pres.), G. Honor Council And now breathe softly as the Honor Council meets in quiet solemnity. Behind those shrouded mystery portals is determined, with dignity and justice for all, the now-imperiled fate of he who has sinned and lost. They whom we have chosen as guardians of the collective conscience must speak with righteous judge¬ ment and impartial justice, with hardly a glance to the sponsor, and levy the wages of sin upon he who sits bowed with the heaviness of shame. Once again, wrong-doing is avenged and the robes are removed as the agents of Honor take their places among us to watch faithfully, balancing in the scales of blind justice our deeds against the awesome weight of the omni-present Code. So with eyes closed and ears open do they wait and whoever does wrong in the eyes of his enemy is thereby named and must stand ready to meet his Honor. 92 Homeroom Representatives Into the halls pour the hordes of representatives. Fire in their eyes, faith in their hearts, and firmness in their tread, they stride proudly to the library for the fine notices. With vibrant voices and fearful glances to the PA. they hasten to share the mimeographed Matters of Interest which spring from their meetings in the best of Parliamentarian manner. Alas, that such would-be generosity should show itself in such grand ineffectuality, for the Matters are too long and the periods too short and the announcements leave time for but little, which is saved by the bell. Chorus They have to remind us there ' s music as they try to give life to the seasons, which are only too full of a life in suspension. In the faultless progression of note-to-note, we see only the disorder that is our own. The burst¬ ing-free sound can only counterbalance our own careful captivity. But listen, if you will. From that special seat in that special section, listen and let whatever is free drift in its own attempt to find its own Music of the Spheres. Band Music en masse. Organized to symmetry and syn¬ chronization, the many become a group and the group becomes one. As a unit, then, the whole of collective instruments serves its function as a mood. Draw a chord, add color and texture and let it slip the stream which carries our songs, our games, our victories, our defeats. Add motion and it ' s a marching band. Take away a few guys and it ' s an All-State band (less quantity = more quality?). But through it all, it ' s our band and our mood, the mood which is, for better or worse, that whic h we call Groveton. 98 Members: First Row: C. Reifsnyder, B. Hughes, C. Oswell, M. Botey, S. Thespians To pretend is to find reality in a world of your own devising. When you act, you find a reality of pretending. A world of stage and effect that constantly changes, constantly showing something more. For a time, the play ' s the thing and everything else pretending of no importance. Within the infant realm of this place of chaos and cheer enter all the shapes and forms that drift in and out of the high school world. Oh, it ' s a microcosm, all right, and any kind of cosm is hard to make. But on, noble crew! On with nets swinging wildly to catch the ethereal butterflies of the spirit and the banal cor¬ porealities of the corridors. Turn to the rhythm of Soul, give in to Temptations and be guided. The Book must come, the Book will come (the Book should come) and another step, another leap, another notch in the wheel. Trusty news hounds are sent out to prove their worth in the grand arena of events. In the upper echelons, raw thought is deli¬ cately distilled into statements of opinion. Page by page the pageant of life finds ex¬ pression for mass consumption. Plumes for their hats when they find that somebody out there likes the page. Deadlines closer and closer — never say die. They go on, and if sometimes there doesn ' t seem to be any¬ thin g to print we have only ourselves to blame. And anyway, they can say (as Groveton often does), No news is bad news. Kind of an indeterminate basis for a society, you say? Maybe. Still, it does serve a purpose in leading to the development of scholarly characters. And just think, you can look in the membership rolls and there it is . . . our own academic Who ' s Who. So here we have Groveton ' s contribution to the culti¬ vation of the spirit. A step in the right direc¬ tion. It ' s something. Anyway, the members all pay their dues. 111 Spanish Honor Society All the best of Spain. Mr. Dos Passos has no secrets from these purveyors of the Spanish noun. Never over their heads, they breast the currents of lan¬ guage to emerge dry and unscathed. A year, a movie, and a meal and the junior conquistadores retire from the battle, ready to return and con¬ tinue the flight. Some will be listed as missing in action, of course, but for these there are always more to be at¬ tracted by the lure of tortillas and pinatas. And so continue the honor and the glory of a word or more. On them have gone the work and the tide. To them belong the spoils that only the savants of a tongue will know. Members: First Row: S. Come with us to gay Paris, there to scale a linguistic Tour Eiffel, to arrive at the verbal Arc de Triomphe and to bask in the sidewalk sun of achieve¬ ment. Not for naught are the long years. Not for the many the final note of recognition. Clothed in the sumptuous garb of honor such as only Louis Quatorze, the Sun King; posses¬ sed of the proud heritage of Monsieur Charles; eager con¬ sumers of nothing but the best French cuisine; the wreathed heroes stride through the jardins of the flowery language of love and wish, perhaps, for a small authentic touch of the old country. 113 Members: First Row: H. Latin Honor Society To those who have conquered the language that conquered the world. Through the dim corridors of time the voices of Rome step forward to be heard in the light of Latin I, II, III, and IV. The achievements of ancient warriors of the sword now are linked with the achievements of modern warriors of the pen, and the dead is revived to life in the proud young voices. An honorable culmination of the diligent years and faithful fulfillment of les¬ son plans. We who are about to leave salute you. 114 Top Picture, Varsity Team: First Row: K. Johnson, J. Debate The composition of knowledge and rhetoric. Invincibility lies in convince-ability and a pointed attack. Pro and con validity confirmed or proscribed to individual joy or horror. Now is the time to spin the dial and mark out your steps on the checker¬ board-tiled floor of Academe. Shake up the cup, sift wheat from chaff, and cast your lots. Pass your nine weeks of Go and collect your bonus (be it giant or otherwise). We bid welcome to these initiates, who have yet to learn the Rules of The Game. May you partake of our Gambler ' s Luck as you take your leap. Now hop your¬ self from square to square. We spin again . . . again . . . again. And where you stop, nobody knows. 168 Charles Adkins Julie Allen Sue Allen Rita Alvarado Tim Alvey Robin Anderson Bonnie Biermann Charles Bish Shirley Blake Sandra Bolick Sharon Booth Richard Bottorff Theodore Broida Chandler Brown Gayle Brown Lizabeth Bruffy Joe Buckles Michael Burr Josephine Carr Judy Carrell Corrine Carter Michael Cavaliere Elizabeth Ca ' viness Paul Childers William Bowden Patricia Bradley Clyde Breeden Ann Brickelmaier William Brideson Sally Broadhurst Peter Byrne Linda Caddell Ann Calahan James Campbell Janice Campbell Alexander Canevale Stanley Chominski Ole Christensen Phillip Christian Peter Christie Larry Clark John Clarke Larry Clement Diana Cole Betty Coleman Jeff Coletti Donald Collins Liese Cook 169 Steven Dam Catherine Dancy Virginia Davis Eddie Dean Denise Didawick Bruce Dillon Priscilla Coughlin Patricia Crawford Ronald Cronan Bruce Crowther Thomas Cunningham James Curry Danny Dillon David Dnigneault Perry Dobson Pearl Dodd Martha Dodge Bonita Dotterer Jerry Dunham Rebecca Ellis Bruce Elmore Robert Emerson Peter Enthoven Kay Feldman Sharon Ford Jim Forrester Jill Fraver Charles Freeman William Frome Carol Gallant Richard Graubard John Gray Randy Green Richard Green Carolyn Grimes Sharon Hale Alan Hall Bonita Harder Mike Harlow Donald Harmon Anne Harper Elizabeth Hasty 170 Pat Hasty Brenda Hautz Jeverna Haynes Ronald Hedrick Charles Hellner Diane Helvey George Hinkle Donald Hixon Barbara Hodges Betty Hodges Treva Hodges Cynthia Hook Eric Hemmendinger Joyce Herman Joan Hiebert Rose Hiebert Sandra Hill Geraldine Hines Fred Horecky Gale Horner Doug Houser Robert Howard Pamela Howett Dana Hughes Paul Hunt Barbara Hunter Theresa Hyatt Vicki Ingham Denise Jackson George Jackson Robert Johnson Charles Jones Bruce Keir John Keith Kris Kelshian William Kern Mary Kerttula Michael King Olend King Rickey King Kim Kirkpatrick Betty Knapp Edwin Knighton Sharon Kulp Linda Lacasce Nita Laferney Dominic LaManna Laura Lamothe 171 Fred Lander Jacquelyn Larsen Arthur Leavitt Kathleen Lester Peggy Levine William Lexton Gregory Mardis Dianne Martin Sharon Mattos Janet McConnaughey David McLaughlin Barbara Meade Linda Lindstrand Jane Lloyd Joseph Lloyd Robert Lloyd Daniel Lowman Jo Ann Manning Glenda Meade Naomi Medvin Deborah Meehan Joyce Meredith Steve Messerschmidt Kay Michael Harlan Mosel Christine Moynihan Benjamin Muller Deborah Mullins Geraldine Murray George Nakamura Virgie Parton Curtis Paul Jo Anne Payne Cynthia Pearson Robert Pettey James Phillips David Nelson Bruce Newman Judy Newton Gordon Nousianen Donald Okazaki Denise Osborne Henry Plummer Randy Powell Claudia Price Linda Price Mary Anne Purvis Deborah Quander 172 William Radin John Ray Steuart Reiss Joseph Remington Grady Reynolds David Rice Barbara Rich Steven Richards Arthur Richter Mary Richter Stephen Riker David Robey William Robinson Richard Roderick Felix Rogin Chris Rouzie Kathleen Ruddy Louie Sagatov Sheila Sanders Douglas Sanford Virginia Sartini Gilman Saunders Rebecca Schmidt Barbara Schreck Bradford Schwoebel Ronald Scott Susan Seligmann Georgia Shad John Shad John Shafer Bill Sharp Steve Shenker Pamela Shields Jack Shirley Elizabeth Simmons Andrew Sinaiko Sharen Skidmore Brad Smith Suzette Smith William Smith Terry Spedden Gordon Spittle Mark Stratton Cynthia Strawbridge Goodloe Suttler Victoria Tanner Bob Tansey Deloras Taylor Miranda Spivack Theresa Spurlin Diane Stanley Marilyn Stanley Ann Stewart Debby Stinnett 173 Joy Taylor Michael Tolcott Deborah Treder William Trefrey Kathryn Turner James Valade George Vaughan William Viar Marta Vickers Nancy Walker Steven Walker Steve Walske Sharon Washington Corrine Watts Katherine Weaver Michael Webb Daniel Weintraub Rebecca Welch 8rooksie Wells Laurie Weston Deborah White George White Mark Whiteley Peggy Whitley Diane Wilt Frank Wood Steven Wright Cheryl Yeager David Yeager Melville Yudkin Cecilia Wilcox Delores Williams Dennis Williams Joan Williams Mark Williams Marsha Williams 174 175 SOPHOMORES Now that the blushes are all faded and wide eyes become half-shut ; what will you do today. Sophomores? You who used to be so young. You say that now is the time for all games to come to an end, because Life is a serious business. There are a lot of people to watch and learn the tricks of how-to-do-it from. It ' s time to make your mark and show the power of positive Sophomore thinking. But you know about the thinking in the no-man ' s land of Sophomority, with all the empty-headed spaces that must be filled with something. So you play at the game of knowing, make sure you know who knows you ' re knowing, and wait . . . Class Officers: First Row: D. West (Pres.); Second Row: T. Hinn (Sec.), T. Anderson (Rep.), V. The half-way point and the process of calibration begins in earnest. From pen to pin and up onto the wall with you. There is your vantage point to look around and see what it ' s all about. You ' ve collected a fair amount of game cards, you see. It ' s really up to you. Just open up those somewhat filtered-starlight eyes and start wriggling your way toward freedom. Calibration, classification, codification, calculation, a dash or two of confusion, and perhaps some capitulation. Such is the stuff that Senior dreams are made of. Gather together your building blocks and place men. One last spin of the dial and they ' ll send you on your way. No backward looks. You ' ve got your toys, and there ' s a big wide world for you to play in. Of course, the rules might be a little different from ours, but we ' re sure you can manage.
