Asscmbhcs October 11 1955 The first assembly thls year was held today by the H1Y They showed a YM C A movie Mr Cas cadden told the names of several boys who had won awards for projects entered 1n Lancaster Fair He told us about a new scholarshlp which would benefit boys who want to teach shop ln the future November 11 1955 Mr Clemences elghth grade gave a program ln memory of Veterans Day Billy Hmkley played Tap wh1le Paul Rice read the names of honored dead from Groveton November 18 1955 The Semor play cast presented several scenes from the1r play There was a great deal of laughter from the audience December 9 1955 The eighth grade under the d1rect1on of M1ss Corey presented a play entitled The Chrlstmas Runaways The cast mcluded Jean Nailer Ed ward Johnson Maurlce Oliver Austln Astle W1n ston Hawes Helen Cloutler and Robert Turner the asslstant dlrector The play was very well done December 14 1955 Mr McFarlane from Concord N H told grades nlne through twelve lmportant facts about alcohol He showed a movle about C2 A5 OH better known gave was very lnterestlng and worthwhile January 11 1956 Mr Fowhe showed plctures today Mr Cascadden presented S25 00 each to Jack Lynch the Semor class president and to Robert Nugent the Fresh man class presldent Ruth Martin Robert Nugent and Rowell Thlbodeau received trophies for P3111 clpatlng ln the Wlnter Carnlval The glrls Semor trophy wasnt presented because Marilyn Dufour Donna Goad Marlene Bean and Connie Platt were tied for first place January 20 1956 A group of students from North Stratford under the dlrectlon of Mrs Treffrey entertamed us th1S afternoon They did three square dances entitled My Little Girl Texas Style and Boston Fan cy The exh1b1t1on was enjoyed bv everybodv February 27 1956 Followmg the usual procedure Jack Lynch the Semor class presldent led the audlence 1n the Lords Prayer and Reginald Zanes the Junior class president led the Flag Salute Mr Cas cadden announced the names of the four honor students They are Sheila Anderson Carolyn John son Carol Marshall and Patricia Marshall Con gratulatlons' Soc1als We have had four soclals so far this year and hope to have some more The rule which was ln troduced last year regarding soclals 1S being used again tlus year The seventh and eighth grades are not allowed to go to the senior high SOC181S and the n1nth through twelfth grades are not allowed to go to the junior high soclals Our first social a great success was the Fresh man Reception given by the sophomores on Octo ber 28 1955 Muslc was furmshed by Ph11 Nelson and h1s Purple Pepsters The H1 Y gave a Record Hop on November 4 1955 It was well attended and everyone had a good time The seventh grade gave a Superstltlons Soclal on Friday January 13 1956 The elghth grade was invited Mus1c was by records Dancing was from 7 00 9 30 Everyone had a very good tlme The freshmen gave a very successful Leap Year Dance on March 9 1956 The gym was gally dec orated with balloons and card tables had been set up around the floor MUSIC was furnlshed by Phil Nelson and his Purple Pepsters Round and square dancing was enjoyed by all They had a very good crowd and everyone had a good tlme GIIIS Chorus The Girls Chorus under the direction of Mr Louis MICUCCI enjoyed a very successful season We took part 1n the annual Chrlstmas Concert whlch was a big success We also sang at the Town Bridge the night the Lions Club turned on the Christmas l1ghts The chorus conslsts of girls from the Freshman Class to the Seniors There are about fifty girls en iolled thlS year Sheila Anderson Boys Chorus The Boys Chorus conslsted of twenty members and was instructed by Mr M1cucc1 It was a strlct ly volunteer actlvlty At Mr MICUCCIS annual Christmas Concert the chorus sang a few selec tions and the chorus also entertamed some of the townspeople when they sang along with the Girls Chorus at the dedlcatlon of the Lions Clubs Chrlstmas decorations Two of the Chorus members Jack Lynch and Stewart Sherburne were plcked to slng at the an nual All State Music Festlval which was held ln Keene O I I. ! 1 ! . . 2 ' ' , - , , , . . . . , . , - - ' u n ss ,.,n ' - D J '- U H 7 ' v 7 u - - ' as ' v 1 - H 1 Y 1 1 1 ,Y . Th1s was a questlon everyone wanted to know the answer to so many Groveton fans arrlved at Lancaster to watch this game Our boys played a wonderful game Lancaster Just couldnt get the baskets and at the half was qulte a number of pomts behmd the score was Groveton 36 Lancaster 15 We con tlnued getting baskets and won Wlth 54 pomts to Lancaster s 32 Our high scorers were Nelson and Lynch each Wlth fourteen pomts We were unde feated m our first five games Could we cont1nue Tlus questlon w11l have to Walt unt1l after our vaca tion when we w1ll be challenged agam by St Pat s of Berlln January 3 1956-St Pat s at Groveton Throughout the first half of th1s game the score was very close At the half our team was only one polnt ahead of Berlln Then our boys really opened up and won the game 64 46 Jack Lynch was our hlgh scorer Wlth 19 pomts and B111 Kerr followed very closely with 17 pomts Our boys were stlll undefeated The Jumor Varslty also beat St Pat s but It was a close one 27 26 January 6 1956-Groveton at Colebrook When the two teams had played one quarter of the game we were ahead 18 15 but slnce the teams seemed to be so evenly matched no predlctlons dared to be made for elther team At the half our boys led 34 33 and the tenslon was almost un bearable Then in the thxrd quarter somethmg hap the ball but we couldnt make It go through the r1m We fell behlnd nlne pomts at the thlrd quar ter and lost to the Colebrook team 68 53 Lynch made twenty five pomts for G H S seventeen of which were made ln the first half The Colebrook team played a very good game and were very lucky on their long shots Our boys had now lost thelr first game of the season and everyone was lookmg forward to our first game Wlth Gorham next week Good luck boys' was everyone s cry January I0 1956-Littleton at Groveton The first half of th1s game was very close and our Eagles led by only two pomts at the half Then our boys really got together and managed falrly well to hold a ten pomt lead to the end We won the game by 11 pomts 61 50 Hlgh scorers on our team were Phll Nelson Wlth twenty three pomts and Jack Lynch wlth elghteen Our cheerleaders are showmg a lot of lmprovement th1s year score was Groveton 69 Whlte field 45 Many players on our second strmg play ed and some of them look very prom1s1ng Jack Lynch was our lugh scorer w1th 20 pomts Also Kerr had 15 and Nelson had 14 pomts Our boys really played a good game and everyone IS hoplng they ll keep up the good work at our next game WhlCh IS wlth Gorham who IS undefeated Good luck boys' January 20 1956-Gorham at Groveton The gym was packed full almost lmmedlately after the doors opened The crowd was very uneasy hopmg our boys could overcome the undefeated Gorham Huskles At first we seemed to have them stopped for at the end of the first quarter we were ahead 16 2 We contmued on wlth a score of 24 14 lh our favor at the half All of our boys were playmg excellent ball and were ahead 38 30 at the th1rd quarter mark Then Gorham woke up and slowly crept up to our score They t1ed us and with approxlmately two mlnutes to go Jumped one po1nt ahead of us Two lmportant players on our team were fouled out and we were unable to get ahead of the Huskles for more than one polnt Then due to good foul shots on the part of M1cucc1 of Gorham the Huskies went three po1nts ahead of us and the buzzer rang endmg the game We had lost a very hard fought game Lynch and Nelson were our h1gh scorers but everyone on our team played an excellent game January 24 1956-Notre Dame at Groveton In thls game our boys really went to town and put up a lead of 24 pomts at the half Most of our play ers had a chance to enter the game and we won by fifteen pomts Jack Lynch was our hlgh scorer January 27 1956-Groveton at Littleton There was a very b1g crowd gathered 1n the new Llttleton gym to see our boys play Llttleton Every one agreed that the gym was a wonderful one but everyone wondered how our boys would do on a large floor Both teams played a wonderful game Our Purple Eagles had a two polnt lead at the end of the first quarter and only two pomts at the half We contmued to get the baskets but couldn t make a very b1g lead on Llttleton We won the game by seven pomts 60 53 Jack Lynch agam became our hlgh scorer wlth elghteen polnts January 31 1956-Groveton at Stratford The first half of thls game was very close We couldnt pull away from the Stratford team and were only five pomts ahead at the half Then 1n the th1rd quarter we got together and Jumped ahead by slxteen pomts From then on Stratford played a hard game but we won 79 49 Jack Lynch agaln became our high scorer with twenty elght pomts Ph1l Nelson also played a good game maklng eighteen pomts February 3 1956-Lancaster at Groveton The Lancaster Groveton game IS always one which everyone looks forward to Lancaster caught us off guard, and at the end of the first quarter we were tra1l1ng by three pomts We then caught up to lead by five pomts at the half Then ln the thlrd quarter we ran away w1th the game w1nn1ng by 22 pomts Jack Lynch agaln became our h1gh scorer Wlth 36 pomts more than half of our pomts ln the entxre game' Also L1nn1e Carver played February 7 1956-Colebrook at Groveton This was w1th no doubt the most thrilling game of the season to date Both teams got off to a bad start not being able to get the baskets At the end of the first quarter our Eagles led by only two pomts but our lead Jumped to six points at the half Both teams played very evenly in the th1rd quarter and at its end we still led by six points To add to the tension and excltement one of our play ers made a basket by accident for the Mohawks' Then the last quarter was very close and very ex c1t1ng Colebrook tled with us wlth about three mmutes to play The tens1on from then on was al most unbearable The lead see sawed between the teams until the end When the buzzer rang our boys were in the lead by two points 59 57 Our team was now in second place ln the lrvhlte Moun tam League Arthur Collins was high scorer for us w1th 20 points Lynch had 18 Ph1l Nelson had 16 and MCBfld6 had 5 Everyone was proud of our team for they really had played a wonderful game' February I0 1956-Whitefield at Groveton Our Groveton Eagles really went to town 1n the last quarter of the game and won by 29 pomts At the half we led by only four pomts and held thls lead to the end of the third quarter Then we Jumped ahead 29 pomts at the sound of the buzzer endlng the game Our boys are 1n a winning streak again and I hope they continue It to thelr last game boys February I4 1956-Groveton at Gorham and on to Gorham for our last Whlte Mountain League game It was a very excltlng game even though we were qulte a number of points behind In the first quarter we led the way but were three po1nts behind at the end of it One of our most 1mportant players McBr1de hurt his ankle ln the first quarter and was unable to play the rest of the game In the second quarter we fell twelve points beh1nd even though we were playing a fairly good game There were a lot of fouls called on our team whlch accounted for many points for Gorham The Huskles are very good on getting their foul shots whlch IS a very important factor in winning a bas ketball game Then ln the third quarter we fell 23 points beh1nd We lost the game 67 46 Jack Lynch was again our high scorer with 23 points Our next game w1ll be a play off game wlth Merc d1th at Conway Good luck boys' Feb I7 1956-Groveton vs Meredith at Conway The turnout of Groveton fans for this game wa terrific Our fans filled more than half of the gym at Conway Our boys started the game very strong ly and led by mne pomts at the one quarter mark We were very good on rebounds and we missed very few foul shots At the half we were fourteen points on top' I have never seen better sportsman ship at a game than I d1d at this one Even though the Meredlth team was beh1nd they spoke of how good some of our players were The game was a clean one and Id l1ke to congratulate both teams for lt We kept a good lead and the final score was Groveton 45 Meredith 33 Prescott and Par 1sse were two outstanding players from Meredith while for Groveton Arthur Collins made sixteen pomts and Jack Lynch made fifteen Phil Nelson played a wonderful game scorlng n1ne points and Bill Kerr scored four L1nn1e Carver played a very good game and scored one point It was a wonder ful game Keep up the good playing boys' Our next game whlch will be with Alvlrne will be a quarter final game Alvlrne has lost only one game so the game at Wolfeboro should be an excltlng one Feb 22 1956-Groveton vs Alvlrne at Wolfeboro This was without any doubt one of the best games our boys played ln their whole season The exclte ment and tension of it lasted rlght up to 1ts end We were unable to get a lead but Alvlrne couldnt pull away from us either At the end of the first quarter we were 1n front by two polnts but at the half we were one point behind In the third quar ter we Jumped ahead again but couldnt get more than a few points ahead At the end of the thlrd quarter we were ahead by three pomts Then 1n the last quarter the game was elther tied or the lead wavered between the teams by one point W1th one and one half mmutes to play the score was 47 45-AIVIFHS leading We were able to get only one more point and the final score was 4746 The teams were very well matched even though our boys were all a little shorter than those from Al because they were so evenly matched lt was tlme that beat us Phil Nelson was our high scorer w1th 15 pomts and Jack Lynch followed wlth 14 Every one played a terrific game Collins with 6 points Kerr and Carver with 4 and McBr1de w1th 3 Boys Varsity Basketball 19551956 Our Groveton Eagles had a very successful sea son losing only three games ln the White Mountam League and then to Alvxrne in the quarter finals We finlshed seventh 1n the state The boys vars ity will be losing only two players this year Jack Lynch and Mlckey McBr1de but with other prom 1s1ng players stepping rn Im sure that next year our team will be a good one Best of luck to you and all future teams at G H S and may your next season be Q , - Class H1sto1y When we Semors first entered h1gh school we were a httle shy as it seemed so dlfferent from Grammar School We were more or less on our own It seemed new and excltlnv to us changing class rooms every perlod We had so many teach ers and books that we didnt know what to thlnk We got used to It though and lt became a dally routlne The years have gone by and some of us w1sh that we were startlng all over again We have all said that we couldnt vsalt unt1l we get our dl ploma but now we seem to hope that the last year will drag by I guess one never reall es how much he hkes school until he 1S in his Semor year and knows that he will soon be leaving all hlS frlends and 3CtlVltleS behmd We hope that none of the teachers and frlends will ever forget us as we will always keep a plcture of them ln our mmd Freshmen Imhahon How we freshmen dreaded that day of Freshmen In1t1at1on Llpstlck rouge and everythlng but mud was plastered all over us We had to crawl on our hands and knees from down street Boy were our knees sore' We could have lgnored those sopho- mores and would have if we hadnt thought we would have gotten more pumshment After we got to school the sophomores got us down to the Chem lab and hosed us wlth water We looked hke somethlng from another world Then we filed 1nto the gym and had salt dumped ln our halr then had other punlshments such as feed1ng each other bananas that had been rolled all over the floor Then some of us had to walk on wet spaghettl We surely were tired when lt was all over but lt really was fun and we wouldn t have mlnded domg lt over agaln The sophomores gave a social for our benefit ln the evening When we finally became members at G H S we ordered our class rings The class all agreed on one type On October 2 1953 we put on our first SOCl3l 1n the h1gh school Grades 9 12 were lnvxted The evemng was enjoyed wlth round and sq.1a e danc es Refreshments were free The social was a suc cess On October 22 1953 our class rlngs finally came and we were all happy and satlsfiezl w1th them On January 13 1904 we got our class banner with the colors blue and gold It really IS pretty and we are proud of It On October 26 1954 vue had a Sadie Hawkms SOC131 and everyone was 1nv1ted We all wore dungarees The girls had to pay the boys fare We took the measurements of the boys waist and the g1rl had to pay according to the slze It was a huge success and all enjoyed themselves We declded we wanted to earn more money for our treasury so we put on a food sale on January 3 1955 1n Emery s Store We sold such items as cakes cook1es ples and doughnuts The sale was very successful Rachel Collins was chairman and chose her own committee We also had a few candy sales but didnt do so well on those Our blggest dlsappolntment was when the prm clpal told us there would be no more Semor trips to New York Our class was to have been the last class to go and the news really shook us but we had to accept it We may make our own class trlp not under the school s respons1b111ty Jumor Prom Aprll 22 1955 What a busy week we had getting everythlng ready for our Prom We spent hours and hours of our time getting the gym decorated We had Dean King s orchestra The gym was decorated ln pas tel colors and we had a revolvlng crystal ball The decoratlons were a sprmg scene with blrds flow ers and mountains We really thought lt was beau tlfu In the evening at 8 30 our big dance began all the girls were dressed in beautiful gowns and most of the boys 1n tuxedoes At n1ne we had our Grand March and it was really beautiful seeing so many dlfferent colored gowns Our Prom was a huge success Semor Hop Well this year IS sure going to be important for us Senlors as we are golng to have our dance the Semor Hop and we have set the date for May We have been planning all week how we are to have for a orchestra We have decided to have Dean King and to decorate the gym in pastel col ors We hope it will be a big success as we have worked very hard to please everyone Graduation How we are golng to dread that mght Walkmg down that long aisle 1n front of all our friends and neighbors and knowlng that we may never see them agaln because our plans for the future may lead us elsewhere Some of us will be glad to start our future but will miss our dear old school G H S There will be many tear stained faces on that mght But as we look around and see our teachers we will be grateful to them knowmg that they helped us to reach our goal We had some pretty hard struggles but our teachers and friends were always there to help us out We will never forget the plays Carnlval basket ball and other aCtlVlt16S that we had fun partlclpat mg 1n To us there 1snt any other school in the world that we would love as much as G H S Jack a pet shop salesman Whats your com pla1nt Nancy The parrotl bought here yesterday wont talk Jack D1d you give nt a chance?
