Class Prophecy My goodness here I am at the rrpe old age of thrrty five' It just doesnt seem possrble that erghteen years ago I graduated from G H S Vly Job as a travelrng salesman for the Groveton Papers Company sellrng Yanrty Farr trssues keeps me gorng from Earth to Mars on a rocket shrp and trme surely does fly' Why even thrs mornrng when I took off my heart Jumped rrght up rnto my tonsrls' But I recerved nrst ard from the rocket lrne hostesses who were none other than Shrrley Laur hammer and ber assrstarrt Marrlyn Matthews' They told me that the shrp s prlot was Ixerth Warren I mrglrt have known Ixerth always was the fast type' Thev also sard tlsat Brll Benway was head of the Jet Mechanrcs of Amerrca Lpon reachrng my office I nrade up my mrrrd that I was gorrrg to ask for a vaea tron and thats just what I got Guess the course rn Psychologv that I took at C' H S was some good after all because I completely sold myself to the boss Groveton now the largest metropolrs rn the East must surely have changed Stopprng ofl at New York for my darly cup of tea, whom should I meet but an old classmate 'rnd now owner of The Tea Cup Glor ra MQGUIFC and drd we ever chew the rag' I hated to leave but rt was trme to start for Groveton I spent the trrp read rug the newspaper and was most pleased to find that Donald lxnapp had accepted the rronrrrratron for Presrdent on the Democratre treket Frnally arrrvrng at the Memorral Arr Freld on the outskrrts of the erty that evenrng I deerded to see rf I couldnt brt a few of the hrgh spots at a nrgbtelub or two and mavbe round up some of the gang Hold rt folks That rrrusre sounds farrrrlrar' Sure enough rts Freddy Taylor and hrs Musre Makers That hand rs srmply terrrfie Now back at the hotel whom should I run rnto but Barbara Woodward She told me she was marrred to the owner lwhreb drdnt surprrse me'l and that Pat Cote was workrng as a dental assrstant rrght across the street The next mor nrng as I was walkrng up the long street, who should almost knock me over but John Lurvey one of the chref book es of the Bel Arr race tracks of Groveton I knew thrs was Just the Job for Iohn As I left hrm I notrced the srgrr Margaret s Musrc Store Upon enterrng, I recerved a very hearty welcome from none other than Margaret McFadden Thrs conversatron lrke the others fell on the good old days She told me that Mae Iakrn was a krndergarten teacher and that Jeanette Lavertue havrng a lrst of customers that read lrke the Boston socral regrster' After sayrng goodbye to Margaret I went to a movre It was Romeo and Julret star rrng Raymond Mrles and Barbara Ledger Raymond eertarrrly has eome a long way rn the theater from usher to star' Iookrng around after the show I saw Beverly Barnett who told me she was a nurse now and workrng for a very successful doctor Brll Jordan From her I learned that June Leclere had marrred one of the doctors at the Groveton General Hosprtal and was workrng wrth her husband as a brarrr surgeon She also sard that Barbara Rrch and her husband had moved to Alaska brrt that they usually vrsrted Groveton every week end Just then a newsboy came by callrng Extra' ' Extra' ' Greatest drscovery srnce U 245' I bought a paper and sure enough, Rrehard Sawyer had finally succeeded rn hrs favorrte subject, chemrstry and had become a mrllronarre overrrrght I notrced a brg ad on the next page readrng Watches Reparr ed Whrle You Walt Ernest de Ia Br uere Prop On the socrety page was announcement that Paulrne Whrte, wrfe of a very wealthv orl tycoon from Texas was vacatronrng rn Florrda for the wrnter Her prrvate secretary Vrvran Cantrn was accompanyrng her Golly I Just had to stop rn and see Ernest who told me hed just reeerved a wed drng announcement from Helen Hopps Guess she got trred of Hollywood glamour lrfe Whrle we were talkrng, rn came Beverlv Rolfe, now owner of a charn of fashrorr shops She told me that Molly Fllrngwood had been a very successful phychratrrst but that shes grven up her carer to marry a farmer out West She always drd lrke the country' INow I had only one day left rn Groveton, and upon hearrrrg that Sylvra Lehnert had been chosen first clarrnet player rn the Groveton Symphony I deerded to call on ber at Symphonv Hall From here I learned that Brll W heeler had a large ehrnchrlla far nr rust outsrde of town VN hen I hnally reported back to work l found a note on my desl to report to the boss He told me that I was to have a new secretary and who drd rt prove to ls lui Fyelyn Demers' That nrght before I went to sleep I couldnt help thrnkrng bael r er th p sl few days and what I had learned about my old classmates It made me sad to thrnl about all the good trmes we used to have together, lur at least we b l d o p etty well and we were certainly a ererlrt to! s 1.
