Howard Pew, one of the most olistinguishecl and loyal alumni of Grove City College, has had a bril- Iiant industrial career with Sun Oil Company, serving for thirty-five years as president of the company, and now as chairman of its board. But, despite his many business and civic activities, he has remained a staunch supporter of his Alma Mater. Following the example of his father, Joseph New- ton Pew, president of the Board of Trustees of the college from 1894 until 1912, J. Howard Pew has served the board for fifty-three years, becoming a member in 1912, and succeeding to its presidency in 1931. He has continued to serve the college in that post for the past thirty-four years. Under his guidance, Memorial Hall was erected in 1914 fin memory of his fatherj on the hill above Wolf Creek, thus beginning the construction of the upper campus. Later, the family erected Mary Ander- son Pew dormitory in memory of their mother. Many of the buildings on the campus have been built, in whole or in part, with money contributed by the Pews. In addition, the current proiect, Hoyt Hall, although the gift of hundreds of people, has received its largest contribution from the Pew Foundation. Mr. Pew has devoted incalculable time and effort to Grove City, giving leadership in its constant quest to meet the ever-changing academic standards of the times, and showing a consuming interest in maintaining and im- proving the physical beauty of the campus. As June, 1965, marks the sixty-fifth anniversary of the graduation of J. Howard Pew from this college, the 1965 OUIJA staff takes this opportunity to pub- licly thank Mr. Pew, on behalf of the entire student body, for his long-standing interest, loyalty, and devotion to the progress of Grove City College. Thus we dedicate the 1965 OUIJA to him. Although most of its ac- tivities are carried out each fall, the board begins in the preceding spring to plan a varied program. The mem- bers of the board seek to unify the freshmen by having picnics and dances, by teaching them cheers and songs ofthe college, and by generally encouraging them in their attempts to get to know each other and their school. Dr Ber an Evans began the special as- . 9 . sembly season when he appeared In Craw- ford Auditorium late in September. Dr. Evans, a well-known author, speaker, television per- sonality, and professor of English at hlorth- western University, presented the audience with an entertaining and thought-pY0V0lCln9 discourse. Most of his time was devoted to the relating of humorous anecdotes based on his several careers. But behind the wit, there were also many interesting and profound ideas. This combination of the light and the serious easily captivated the attention of his listeners. Desire Dr. Bergan Evans Under the Elms The presentation of Desire Under the Elms by the Circle in the Square players in October displayed excellent acting, unique scenery and effective lighting. This unusual play by Eugene O'NeiIl centers around a domineering religious fanatic named Ephriam Cabot whose son is trying to gain control of the family farm. The underlying motives and driv- ing desires woven into the play give each character a sort of agelessness that makes the viewer reflect upon his own motivation. The cast managed to project such force into the roles that the audi- ence was immediately caught up in the problems presented on stage. Scarlet and Tartan Tattoo An addition was made to the schedule of special assemblies in the form of the Scarlet and Tartan Tattoo. This program brought to the G.C.C. arena the true spirit of Scotland. The three performing units: the Fusilier Band, the G.C. Highland Band and the Pennsyl- vania Scottish Country Dance Society, presented a colorful and varied review. The authentic ceremonial uniforms of the Scottish Fusiliers added interesting appeal to their precision marching and the Highland Band proved worthy of its reputation as an outstanding kilty band. A quick change of pace was provided by the enthusiasm of the country dancers. The finale was a culmination of activity with the massed bands participating in combined music and marching. The Scarlet and Tartan proved to be unique and interesting. This experience surely stirred the hearts of all true Scotsmen. All in all, Hans Conreid demonstrated that his reputation as a master ot the quip, comic innuendo, dialect, and the zany reply has been well earned. Q- . 95 M The delightful comedy, The Skin of Our Teeth by Thornton Wilder was Theta Alpha Phi's first production of 1964. It concerns The various plights of Mr. and Mrs. Antrobus and their Two children as they struggle Through The Depression, The Ice Age, The Flood, and a war by The skin of Their teeth. Sabina, The maid, Ties each scene together with her witty comments. Wilder's play is unique in that iT puts Biblical characters in modern settings in order to prove that although There will always be adversity in life, a new beginning will follow each major problem. Under The direction of Dr. Robert Sisler, The cast ex- cellently played Their roles. iiThe Skin Cf Our Sabina . . Mrs. Antrobus Gladys . . Bob Kavtz Randy Brooke Lauren Levian uBonds ol Interest Late in November, Theta Alph', this time under the direction of Dr. Tuefel, presented Jacinto Benavente's Bonds of Interest. The play is a satire of the antics of the standard characters of the com- media del arte, the street theater of Italy during the Renaissance-Leander is the typical hero, Crispin the usual anti-hero. The satire is extended to include the fol- lies of the human race in general. The play is considered Benavente's best comedy, and both his art and the skill of the student actors were well received by the campus audience. f Crispin . Leander . Innkeeper Dona Sirena Columbine . Don Fittal George Wuerthele Hedda Gabler Hedda Gabler by Henrik lbsen was the third dramaticl production ot the season. Directed by Dr. Teufel, the student actors gave a sensitive per- formance ot this well-known play. The play is the story of a woman who is as spiritually empty as she assumes her environment to be. She marries tor security, not tor love, spoiled and trus- trated, the only excitement she 'finds in lite is to practice with a pair of dueling pistols. Eventually, after ruin- ing the lite of a young scholar, Hedda can stand the world and herself no longer. To end her suffering, she sends a bullet through her head. ds, is -...l.s...... John Prince Heartbreak House George Bernard Shaw's Heartbreak House climaxed the dramatic season. This time, under the direction of Dr. Sisler, the cast performed in-the-round. This method of presentation drew the audience very quickly into the story of an unconventional family which invites guests to spend the weekend. The guests are badly dis- illusioned by the frankness of the family's con- versation, thus it is a house of heartbreak . A modern setting was used for the performance, but the setting, due to the universal theme of the play could be anytime or anywhere. J P bw 'viz-asf ig w h lsruw nf, QM I , -wing V4 yi Wx f .. He was the victim of an automobile acci- dent on a slippery road. In the two years Bob was at Grove City, his ready smile and easy laugh found him many friends. His spirit and per- sonal generosity will be missed, but not forgotten, by those closest to him - his family, his friends, and his fra- ternity brothers. When a life ends it is remembered and cherished by those left behind. This page is but a small memorial to Bob, and a tribute to his loved ones. 225 Sophomore Class 0lllC9TS l l aearea: L.. atem, Ireczs., P. Cooper, V.P., D. McKelvey, Pres., L. Leviczn, Stu. Council.
