just completed a most successful term of school.
The prospects in his new territory did not appear
bright. He was. however, a visionary, a 'dreamer
of dreams'. From the first he had in his mind the
vision of a college. This he always kept before
him as his goal.
"Upon his arrival he secured the Lipper room of
the village school house for a nominal rent, ntted
it with the necessary furniture and books, and ad-
vertised his school.
"There appeared the first day just thirteen
pupils. The entire enrollment of that first term

Grove City College has developed from a school
organized in 1876 by Dr. Isaac C. Ketler. In
1879, the Court of Common Pleas of Mercer Coun-
ty granted this school its tirst charter naming it
Pine Grove Normal Academy. On November 21,
1884, the Court of Common Pleas granted the
school a new charter naming it Grove City College,
the name it bears today.
To give a more accurate 'and interesting account
of the founder and the early days of the school,
may we quote a few paragraphs from first Ouijrz
published in 1912.
"Thirty-six years ago a young man came to a
country village, then known as Pine Grove. He
came to start a select school or academy. He was
poor, without iniiuential friends. and had no finan-
cial backing nor promises of iinancial support from
the community. He gave up most flattering and
lucrative offers to return to a district where he had
numbered little more than a score. They were
earliest students, anxious to learn and were stirred
by the remarkable enthusiasm and energy of their
preceptor. He, in his early days, taught as many
as nineteen classes a day, working from seven in
the morning till seven in the evening. He labored
far into the night. in the early mornings, and at
times the whole night preparing for his classes,
advertising his school, looking after the welfare of
the students and in a constant effort to advance
himself and his institution."
Due to the energy and visions of Dr. Isaac C.
Ketler and the persons who became interested in
the school, Grove City College has progressed from
a school with one room, one professor, and thirteen
students to an educational institution with fourteen
modern buildings, forty-eight professors, and eight
hundred and forty students.
