He was. however, a visionary, a 'dreamer of dreams'. From the first he had in his mind the vision of a college. This he always kept before him as his goal. Upon his arrival he secured the Lipper room of the village school house for a nominal rent, ntted it with the necessary furniture and books, and ad- vertised his school. There appeared the first day just thirteen pupils. The entire enrollment of that first term Y me QAWJQO, LOWER CAMPUS 1N l9Il Grove City College has developed from a school organized in 1876 by Dr. Isaac C. Ketler. In 1879, the Court of Common Pleas of Mercer Coun- ty granted this school its tirst charter naming it Pine Grove Normal Academy. On November 21, 1884, the Court of Common Pleas granted the school a new charter naming it Grove City College, the name it bears today. To give a more accurate 'and interesting account of the founder and the early days of the school, may we quote a few paragraphs from first Ouijrz published in 1912. Thirty-six years ago a young man came to a country village, then known as Pine Grove. He came to start a select school or academy. He was poor, without iniiuential friends. and had no finan- cial backing nor promises of iinancial support from the community. He gave up most flattering and lucrative offers to return to a district where he had numbered little more than a score. They were earliest students, anxious to learn and were stirred by the remarkable enthusiasm and energy of their preceptor. He, in his early days, taught as many as nineteen classes a day, working from seven in the morning till seven in the evening. He labored far into the night. in the early mornings, and at times the whole night preparing for his classes, advertising his school, looking after the welfare of the students and in a constant effort to advance himself and his institution. Due to the energy and visions of Dr. Isaac C. Ketler and the persons who became interested in the school, Grove City College has progressed from a school with one room, one professor, and thirteen students to an educational institution with fourteen modern buildings, forty-eight professors, and eight hundred and forty students. KETLER -4- 1 937 OU PIQESIDENTS MESSAGE GREE'r1Nos: I am glad to accept the invitation of the editors of the Ouija to use its pages to bring a greeting to the students of the college. I wish to express my congratulations on the achievements of the year that is now drawing to a close, and to express my gratitude for the spirit that has been manifested throughout the year. In the past year, the attendance has been the largest in its history. In the larger community, there is a new emphasis on the importance of cooperative living. There are new opportunities and correspond- ingly greater responsibilities. The year has been one which has been marked by notable advances not only in enrollment, but, also, in the growth and improvement of the physical plant of the College. The construction of the Mary Anderson Pew Dormitory, the addition to the Isaac C. Ketler Dormi- tory, the building of the Overlook Wall and the improvement of the campus have all been indications of growth. They are, also, expres- sions of the magnihcent generosity of the friends of the College. It is our task to show our appreciation by taking larger advantage of our opportunities and living life on a higher level. The close of the year inevitably means some of our number are leaving the College and entering new Helds of activity. Our good wishes go with them. And I hope that those who return next year will hnd in the College an avenue to a larger life and a more useful service. Sincerely yours, OF PROGRESS -5- 1926 1922 1934 1911 1907 1935 1912 1926 1928 1925 1916 1910 1902 1905 1931 1928 1927 1935 1933 1935 1906 1919 1926 1919 1902 1936 1912 1928 1901 1912 Board of Trustees TICRM EXPIRES JUNE, 1937 1'Yll.SON A. Al- ways in debt, always in trouble, it appeared to be headed for disaster. The abortive experiment with the daily left it practically finished financi- ally. But somehow the thin thread of life held. Since that time, the Collegian has shown tre- mendous improvement. This year, we are reaping the rewards of what previous editors have done. Students are actually asking to be put on the staff, where formerly they had to be begged. Iilessed with a tine group of news writers, ex- cellent features, and an etiicient business staff. we have tried to continue on the path of progress that has been established. News pictures, more fea- tures, six or eight pages every week instead of four, an aggressive editorial policy, improved typo- graphy, faster town delivery, and vitality of writ- ing are some of the things we have tried to achieve. Yours is the right to judge whether or not we have succeeded. They have given us their 1111- tiring effortei in producing this year book. VVe hope the efforts of this staff have been well spent in presenting to the student body il book which we anticipate will not only afford it many pleasant liiemories of the past year now but will be an indelible account of the happiest and most sigiiificant events of this college year. -92- 1937 OU Editor-infChief Associate Editor Associate Editor Associate Editor Sophomore Assistant Editor EDITORIAL STAFF - HERMAN DIEHL BETTY CASEY - EDGAR SCHOLL - - FRED LADERER CHARLES SCOTT Secretary - - - - - VERA HILL Business Manager ------ JAMES MERRIMAN Advertising Manager - - - KENNETH WEBER Sophomore Business Manager ---- DONALD DENNISON Secretaries - - - EMILY HARSHAW, MARGARET SEITZ Faculty Advisor - - - - DR. There will be a vacant chair. It was unbelievable that Herb was gone, yet it was true. He died early Christmas morning. Death came as a result of a strepto- coecus infection following pneumonia. The passing of a loved one brings bountiful praise of their life on this earth. Many times such praise is unwarranted. Not so with Herb. The best is none too good. I-Ie was a friend to all, criti- cizing none unjustly, lending a helping hand whenever possible. Slow to anger, he seldom spoke a cross word. The College Radio Station, WSAI, is alive with memories of his earliest eliorts to make it rank at the top in modern design and etliciency. The transmitter, designed and built by him, is a model of accuracy and eihciency. It will stand for many years as a sym- bol of his wholehearted support of the school. We shall miss him in all walks of life on the campus. It may be truly said of him None knew thee but to love thee, nor named thee but in praise . After three weeks of preliminary training, a high-spirited Grover eleven was prepared for her inaugural battle with Clarion State Teachers College. This game, which was expected to. be an easy victory for the XVolverines, turned out to be a hard fought struggle that was not decided until the fourth quarter when Abe Mori, plunging Grove City full-back, lugged the ball in a concerted drive of 80 yards and a touchdown for a 13-7 initial triumph. 19-7 score. The open- ing whistle caught the Grove City gridders unprepared and in 15 minutes, the Indians had tallied two touchdowns. Although the Grovers outplayed .luniata the remainder of the game the iinal score ended 12-7 in favor of Juniata. The next game found the Crimson Players on the Slippery Rock State '.I'eachers College gridiron under heavy odds. The entire pre- vious year's team returned to build up a strong outfit to represent Grove City on the hardwood. Getting off to a slow start. the Grovers lost the first two of their encounters. The first to a powerful St. Vincent team which showed its superiority by gaining a 39-30 vic- tory in a close and exciting game. The second encounter, played with Allegheny as our op- ponents. was dropped by a score of 34-2-I after a hard and lasting fight. The Grovers retaliated in the next game with Clarion State Teachers and trounced them to the tune of 43-16. Our opponents were by no means an easy victim, but our boys had obtained that necessary spirit and cooperation that kept them in the lead throughout the game. A trip through the Buckeye State during which the VVolverines met four strong opponents proved very suc- cessful. They topped the Cleveland Chiropodists with u. score of 55-ZS, nosed out Fenn by a 43-41 score, lliram hy 36-36, and came out on the short end of a. vigorous struggle with Kent State leading 49-43.
