We realize that life in school is such a multitude of happenings that it would be impossible to completely relate all of them in black and white. If this book serves as a bridge to the past and brings forth wonderful memories it then will have fulfilled its objective. With these though is held on high we proudly present the 1960 PINE KNOT. TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration and Faculty Seniors Underclassman Junior High Student Activities 50-63 FACULTY ADMIN Dr. Jack B. The goal of our language department is the laying of the foundation for spealdng, reading, and writing skills in English, Latin, French, and Spanish. Students must learn to read intelligently, interpret accurately the meaning of the written word, and be able to communicate by speaking correctly, lest they be misled by terms they do not understand. The competitive spirit in the world today stresses the importance of a better-than-adequate vocabulary and a working knowledge of more than one language for success in life. In his twentieth year of coaching. Coach Eugene Forker turned out another successful squad. The 1959-1960 season with a 7-6 record. The seven returning lettermen provided the experience necessary for a successful season. In the first match of the year the Eagles met Commodore Perry and were edged out 26-21. In their next outing Grove City trounced Lakeview 58-0. The Eagles traveled to Hickory for their third match, where they were defeated 24-19. In their fourth match the Eagles were overpowered by Titusville 37-12. The fifth match found Grove City back in form as they trounced West Middlesex 48-8. Their next meet found the Eagles up against the traditional rivals, Greenville. They fought hard only to be edged out for the third time 23-18. Grove City lost another close one to New Castle 27-22. Traveling back to Oil country, the Eagles were again defeated by a strong Oil City squad 36-14. Following the Oil City match Forker's matmen compiled five straight victories by downing Jamestown 34-13, overpowering Lakeview 55-0, edging Hickory 28-21, squeezing past West Middlesex 29-20, and rolling over Franklin 33-14. Grove City’s grapplers had a new experience this season. They were invited to the State College Christmas Tournament. After two days. Bob Squires was the only Eagle remaining in competition. From this year's eighteen lettermen the Eagles will lose eight seniors. They are Don Watters 15-3-1, Dick Welton 12-5, John Thomas 10-6, Jack Buckley 6-8, Keith McBride 7-4, John Dumbroski 3-8, Max Coulson 2-2, and Les Brinkley 3-3. 1st Row: Hoffman, Edwards; Webster, Ron; Webster, Tom; Savolaskis, Dick; Squires, Rodger. 2nd Row: Remley, Dan; Zimmerman, George; Jones, Clarence; White, Richard. 3rd Row: Coach Forker; Coulson, Max; Squires, Bob; Bennett, Jack; Johns, Don; McBride, Keith; Ruley, Marty; Pesek, Martin; Coach Adams. 4th Row: Dumbroski, John; Neeley, Bill; Wilton, Dick; Watters, Don; Buckley, Jack; Brinkley, Less; Thomas, John. 112 Bill Neely, sophomore, proved to be tough in his first year of competition. Although he had a 3-4 record, it was a good one for a first year man. - Competing in the 165 pound class. Jack Buckley fin-ished his high school career with a 10-12 slate. Jack contributed greatly to the team's winning season. Undefeated in the 95 division. Bob Squires won 16 matches this season. Bob. being only a sophomore, is expected to give the eagles two more good years. Grove City, competing in the unlimited heavyweight division for the first time, sent John Thomas on to the mats as their representative. John racked up a 10-6 record to start what we hope will be a tradition at Grove City. 113 Dick Welton. completed his wrestling career with a 12-5 chart. His speed and agressiveness made him feared by all his opponents. Speed Merchant, Tom Webster ended his initial year as a wrestler with a 3-3 record. His speed and shiftiness made him a tough competitor. Bud Riley, a freshman, competed in wrestling for the first time this year. Bud wrestled only three matches but gained experience that will make him hard to beat in future years. Senior, Don Watters combined a fine junior year and an even finer senior year to finish with a 20-6-1 slate. With only two years of experience Don's record is surely a remarkable one. Marty Pesek, also competing for the first time, chalked up a 3-5 slate. Although his record is not a winning one, it was one of true accomplishment. Marty wrestled in the 180 pound class while weighing only 160 pounds. 114 Senior, Max Coulson competed in wrestling for the future years, first time this year. He racked up a 2-2 record to have a fine initial season. John Dumbroski closed his career with a 3-8 record. His record is not a true picture of his ability. John contributed greatly to a successful season. Another freshman, Roger Squires, completed his initial year in the game with a 2-2 slate. He also picked up the experience needed for a successful season in future years. In his third successful season Marty Ruley chalked up a 11-4 slate. Through his junior year Marty has established a 23-6 mark to become one of Grove City’s toughest wrestlers. Don Johns, established a 6-6 record in his first year of wrestling competition in the 112 pound class. Along with a fine season he gained the experience needed for the seasons to come. Junior, John Bennett finished his initial year of wrestling in the 103 pound division with a 3-3 mark. John should be tough in the lower weights next year after the experience he gained this season. Keith McBride bowed out of the grunt and groan sport after completing four years out of five wrestling. He had an overall record of 17-21, but over the last two years he compiled a 13-8 mark. Les Brinkley completed his high school ca-reer with a 3-3 record. He wrestled in the rough 180 pound class and did a fine job considering it was his first year of competition. 115 GCHS OPPONENT J.V. It was a rags-to-riches aggregation which came back from two successive heartbreaking defeats to win six of the last seven games. The seventh was a 7-7 tie with the undefeated Franklin Knights, rated the number one team in District 10. A large, but inexperienced group of grid hopefuls answered the call for candidates in August and began preparation for the coming campaign. With only five lettermen. Jack Buckley, Corky Mundt, John Thomas, Don Watters, and Dave Braine returning, the Eagles were expected to spend the year rebuilding with little expected in the way of victories. By combining a fierce desire and an eagerness to learn, the Eagles possessed that extra zest needed when the chips were down, and improved with each game. By the seasons end Grove City was one of the most feared teams in the District and held the number two spot, just behind Franklin in the District Ten ratings. Under Coach Richard Bestwick for the third season the Eagles overpowered their opponents in all fields. In points they racked up 171 while holding their opponents to 72. On the ground the Grovers gained 2114 yards to the opponents 1108 yards. Through the passing lanes they picked up 281 yards. 1st Row: Thomas, Watters, Bubeck, Mundt, Brinkley, Braine, Zenobi, Conners, Ruley, Leach, Bell, McEwen, Pierce, Jones, Christley, Neely. 2nd Row:Has$el, J.Wise, Purvis, Ketler, Coleman, Buckley, Dumbroski, B.Wise, Rector, Smalley, Welton, Shaffer, Chem-bers. FOOTBALL Braine follows block. On the opening game of a season that was to bring the Mercer County crown to Grove City High School, the Eagles lost a heartbreaking battle to the Union Township Scotties, 12-6. With three seconds remaining on the scoreboard and the game knotted at 6 all, Union left end, John Jenkins, snagged a 30 yard desperation pass in the end zone for the final and winning play. The Eagles had lost, 12-6, to a team that was to go undefeated. The Rockets from Titusville were the opposition in the Eagles second game. The two teams fought hard throughout the game, each scoring a touchdown. Rick Hipwell’s extra point proved to be the deciding factor of the game. Grove City suffered its second heartbreaking defeat, 7-6. Jerry Wise carried the pigskin across the line for Grove City’s only touchdown. Wise goes for the extra yard 117 Grove City bounced back with a surge of power against Oil City. The Eagles overpowered the.Oilers 38-0 for their first victory. Running at will over a weaker Oil City eleven. Grove City for the first time geared their offensive machine. The entire squad played well and the victory was sweet. Braine lowers the boom. The Eagles slated their second victory of the campaign over Mercer, 21-0. The traditional rivals fought hard in the first half with Grove City scoring only once in the final minutes. Second half play found the Eagles controling the ball and scoring two more touchdowns. A sixty-seven yard touchdown run by Bill Purvis highlighted the Eagle attack. Braine straightarms would-be tackier. Franklin had its perfect record marred by a tie when they met Grove City. The Eagles were up for this one as the highly ranked Knights found out. Grove City scored first on a 97 yard dash by Bill Purvis. Braine booted the extra point. Franklin hit back with a touchdown and a point after to tie the score at the half, 7-7. The second half was one of hard fought defensive football. Neither team scored and the game ended 7-7. The entire Eagle team played well as they captured a moral victory. 118 Purvis and Zenobi crush opposition. The Homecoming game brought the Eagles their third consecutive win with a 26-13 trouncing of Nashannock. Touchdowns and extra points by Braine, Purvis and Buckley constituted the Grover's score. Intercepted passes by Buckley and Mundt set up two Grove City touchdowns. Grove City made it’s first bid for the County Class A title by defeating Greenville's Trojans 21-13. The Eagles took this one the hard way coming from behind twice. A muddy field was a factor in this game as fumbles dominated the action. Sparking the Eagle scoring were two touchdowns by Jay Barlow and one by Dave Braine, Don Watters tallied all three extra points. Long runs by Braine and Purvis set up two Eagle touchdowns. Braine eludes diving tackle. The Eagles copped their second league victory against the Sharpsville Blue Devils downing the Devils 26-7. Two touchdowns in three plays, both by Dave Braine, sparked Grove City’s attack. Two more touchdowns in the second half constituted the twenty-six points. Dave Braine had three T.D.’s and Don Watters had one for the Eagles. Purvis and Mundt pave way for Watters. Grove City climaxed the season with a 21-13 win over Hickory which clinched the Mercer County Class A title. Hickory scored first capitalizing on an Eagle fumble. The Eagles hit back with a touchdown pass to Jack Buckley. The extra point was booted through. The Grovers struck again with a T.D. in the second quarter. Don Watters scored for the Eagles. Again the PAT was good. Hickory scored a touchdown in the second half but the extra point attempt failed. Dave Braine swept a-round end for the Eagles third touchdown. Grove City's fine defense held the Hornets and the time ran out with Grove City ahead 21-13. It was a fitting climax to a highly successful season. Next season will show the return of fourteen lettermen who along with the Junior Varsity 2-4 and Junior High 4-1-1 will have to work hard to match or better the record set by the 1959 Eagle squad. The 1959-60 Grove City basketball team ended their season with 9 wins and 13 losses. Although it was not a winning season it proved to be the second best in fourteen years. The Eagles were able to win only one league game, losing twice to Sharpsville and Hickory and splitting the campaigns with Greenville. In their victories the Eagles looked like a highly percisioned machine in action but in their losses they could never get going as a unit. Leading the Eagle attack were Ed Dunlap and Bruce Clark who combined for 584 points. Dunlap became one of three players in the history of the school to break 300 points. Ranking with Ron Worley 314 and Jim Morrison 320, he scored 301. With Dave Rector being the only returning letterman next year, the team will have to be built from scratch. The building blocks of that team will be, Dan Chanedet, Bob Wise, Francis Hassel, Dave Braine, Walt Thornberry, Keith McKnight, Larry Dunn, Lynn McAnich, Van Crouch, John West, John Sterrett and Dave Lee. These boys will endeavor to better the mark set by this year’s squad and work towards the best record in fifteen years. 1st Row: Samuels, Gary; Leach, Ron; Dunlap, Ed; Bell, Jim; Webster, Dick; Lewis, Dick; Clark, Bruce; Young, Walt. 2nd Row: McAninch.
