Corby. vdfdifg goofgaf jam Grossmont's eleven performed several remarkable teats during the I942 pigskin season: not the least among these being a stirring I3-I3 tie with the mighty San Diego Cavemen, a team which deteated by a large score every other team in the Metro league. Chiet sour note ot the season was the Grossmont loss to Sweetwater, the GUHS arch enemy. Hoover and San Diego each divided their squads in two separate units ot battle. Grossmont was not sched- uled to play the Hoover Red aggregation, but did have occasion to play the Whites, who won by a 7-0 count as the result ot a sustained drive in the tirst quarter. Grossmont threat- ened the Hoover Cardinals several times in the tourth period, driving down to their 20 yard line only to lose the ball on downs. The Caveman game was played atter an inspired bunch ot Foothillers had determined they would win. They stopped the Cavemen colder than a dead mackerel. A sensational pass interception by Roy Domengoni and a long 80 yard run by Don Lee Byrd, raked in the Gross- mont scores. Nelson Manuel, Caveman back, sparked the San Diego bunch throughout the struggle. Played betore a capacity crowd, including many San Diegans, the game was one ot the highlights ot the entire league? season. A well-kicked tield goal by Ted Smith provided the winning two point margin in the Grossmont en- counter with the speedy San Diego Hiller grid squad in the Balboa City Stadium. This game teatured the tirst time GUHS had ever played V? city team and the tirst time the Foot- hillers had played in the Stadium. Grossmont came out 'Fifth in the Victory league, tour wins, three losses, and two ties. GUHS 97 points, opf ponents 60. Left to right, 'first row: C. B. Foster, D. Baker, K. Head, L. Gordon, J. Qfl 0 86Lglfl,0 Grossmont won three, tied one, and lost two in the Metro league tootball division, com- posed ot those teams which were in the league betore Hoover and San Diego joined in I942. Grossmont's loss to the Whites, her tie with the Cavemen, and her win over the Hillers had no bearing on the standings ot this league within a league. Grossmont's tie with La Jolla, her loss to Point Loma by a narrow margin ot two conversions, and her tinal disastrous 9-7 loss to Sweetwater were the sad points in the league. However, her detinite 25-6 drubbing handed to Coronado's Green Wave and her wins over the stalwart sons ot Escondido and the Oceanside Pirates more than compensated tor the losses. Her tie with La Jolla was regret- table. It seemed as though the tog and the sea air were too much tor the team, tor the small rugged La Jolla squad held the Grossmont gridiron steamroller to a O-O tie. lt seemed as though the teams were destined tor a hard struggle when beat Grossmontlu signs greeted our team as they arrived at the rival school. Point Loma used hard drives and sensational passing to bloclc Grossmont's scoring attempts. Hardest blow ot the year was the win by Sweetwater the weelc atter our I4-I2 trouncing ot the Pointers. Grossmont team members had counted on a win over the 'Sweetwater men all season, and when the tield goal and touchdown were made which beat us they were a sorrowtul bunch, indeed. Prospects are dull tor next season, because ot students graduating or joining Uncle Sam's armed torces. ....- n.. J 5 i eff '1 r 'fW511'575'r5 A BASKETBALL TEAM Left to right, 'first row: T Varni, M. Their brothers, the Bees, had all the luck. War was a predominant factor in determining the outcome ot the season. The Ns greatest fault lay in their failure to hit the hoop as much as necessary. The photographs ot many ot Grossmonts teams are incomplete since they were taken when several ot the tellows had answered the call to arms or detense work. The flashy Foothillers also were at white hot heat the Friday they toolc on the boys trorn Coronado. The Green Wave was battered to the tune ot 79 to 25 in the class A tilt and 84 to I I in the class Bee, topping the whole worlcs ott with a smashing 60 to I7 win in the Cee division. The Bees to date remain undefeated, having prolonged the series ot wins with a victory at the expense ot Point Loma. The Cees also are undeteated so tar in the season, having yet to meet only Hoover, as do the A's and Bees. The A's tell victim to the Pointer squad. The meet with Hoover and then an all-Metro meet will close the season. Several returning letternnen assured Grossmont ot a superior team in all three divisions at the start ot the year. But the little matter ot World War ll came along and the A's began being called into the Army, while many others telt they could best serve in Vocational schools and various other detense war jolos. This lett the Foothillers with a slightly depleted roll call when the season started, but Coach Jaclc Mashin toolc what there was and molded it into a powertul well-lcnit organization. Grossmont participated in the low and high hurdles, the 50, l00, 440, 660, 880, and l32O yard runs, the shot put, pole vault, broad jump, and high jump events. The third period lightweight teams defeated their opponent 4I-O in the finals. The lightweight team's members featured a baclcfield consisting of Hastings, Love, Head, and Walker. Sixth period was runner-up in the lightweight division. The heavyweights featured a baclcfield of Dugan, Cooper, Davy, and Bryan, and with one of the strongest lines ever seen in interclass competition, trampled their opponent in the finals I4-O. Fourth period, their opponent in this contest, put up a terrific fight but was outclassed by the speedy fifth period bunch. Each year interclass competition is organized, and in it some of the fellows receive their first actual football experience and go on from there to make regular team members. These fellows practice after school in regulation football equipment, and although they don't receive any awards for their efforts, a good time is had by the participants who put all they have into the game and fight to win. Coach Lawrence Head has charge of all interclass sports. Fourth period was runner-up in the heavyweight division. Fifth period had to play two games to win the title. Left to right, first row: B.
