Loved and respected by all who knew her, she gave all of herself to making the library the center of our school life. Always ready to help locate the proper reference or find the appropriate book, she served every one of us willingly and efficiently from the day she first accepted the staggering task of combining the Country Day and D.U.S. libraries in preparation for transfer to the new building, until early this year when she proudly announced that finally, after seven years, her expectations for her library were close to realization. The library was and is, in a very real sense, hers - her creation and her domain. It will long remain a tribute to the wonderful lady who gave herself to our service and who shall be sorely missed by us all. IN RECOGNITION UF tt F I A x f , J. From the first Sputnik to Pioneer IV every day has brought news of more terrific blast-offs and greater speeds. Travel through space is promised within a few short years and it is quite possible that some of you will pilot space craft, or perhaps buy tickets, to the moon and beyond. To those of us who grew up with the model T and rushed outdoors whenever an airplane motor was heard over the house, this is a staggering prospect. To you who are about to set forth on your own it undoubtedly presents an exciting and challenging future. Our hope is that you will meet the many chal- lenges which lie before you with courage, wisdom and resourcefulness. And l am confident that you will, if you continue to tackle your responsibilities with thc steady determination which has won you both solid academic achievement and signal honors in extracurricular pursuits. We are proud of the seniors of 1959 and grate- ful for what they have given the school -in leadership, loyalty, and spirit. We wish them success and happiness on earth and in space. MR. 'Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth, Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. l shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I . . . We were also in charge of the Bake Sales, a traditional project of the junior girls. Linda Jones was a very nice addition to our class of nineteen girls. To organize the projects, we had two committees, one headed by Patty Walbridge, who was more or less a one-woman committee to take care of any matters concerning Lila, our four year old adopted child who lives with her family on the border between Russia and Finland. Twice a year we sent her money and clothes. Anne Wood was chairman of our other committee, under whose direction the class made things to be used in hospitals and in the Quonset Hut at old C.D.S. Although but recently included among the ranks of school activities in the Yearbook, the G.P.U.S. Camera Club has nonetheless been energetic in its attempts to prove itself useful to the school community. During the football season, camera men from the Club were on hand to record the highlights of the games on film and afterwards to sell the prints to anyone wishing to buy them. Equipped with school darkroom equipment, the Club did an admirable job in satisfying the demand for pictures from all its customers. Limiting itself not merely to school photos, however, the Club often undertook lengthy field trips which took them to areas in and around Detroit. Blessed with a growing membership, the Club may confidently look forward to a worthwhile, enjoyable future as an important school activity. ris e t ,ggi ,- OFFICERS President Peter Grossi Vice-president Paul Sparre Secretary Olin Jennings Treasurer Noel Savignac Faculty Advisor Mr. Roberts CUM LAUDE UCIETY ls! The bright May Pole and lovely queen on the lawn in front of the old school were favorite sights of many passers-by. Her majesty and her court were entertained by the dances of her young, loyal subjects. This ceremony was understandably close to the girls' hearts, and when Country Day and D.U.S. merged, no one wished to abandon it. The old tradition was joined with the boys' Field Day, a round of sporting events, and the parents were invited to watch and participate. G.P.U.S. Day, as this adaptation of the old customs has been named, proved a great success at its initiation last year. It is a fine example of the new and co-operative practices which are fast becoming lasting traditions at G.P.U.S. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Mr. Cragg, Miss Savery, Miss Brock, Mr. Yeager. With the help and cooperation of the team and senior co- captains, Carolyn Jacobson and Melinda Bryan, Miss Brock coached us on to the most successful season in years. Spirit ran high both on the home field and away, which proved itself in the team's determination to win. Competition was stiff this fall, but the team's togetherness came through with five wins, one loss, and a tie. This year's varsity basketball team devoted the majority of its practices in trying to develop a strong defensive team, with the guards working a line defense, and an aggressive offense, the forwards trying to work out various plays, some of which were adapted from the boys' teams. The success of these tactics is evident from the unusually high scores of the last two games. The undefeated record of 1958 was not repeated this yearg however, under Miss Brock and thc co-captains, Carolyn Jacobson and Robin Harris, the varsity worked hard and showed great improvement, particularly in ball-handling and play-making. Gay Bacon was the high scoring forward for the season. RESERVE BASKETBALL ,l I l W - l 1 ,. -vs -1-W ls1Row: Anne Wood, Betsy Semple, Sally Champion, Sandra Schenck, Sue Tilley, Sarah Strother. Losing only one game out ot the four played, the reserve basketball squad had an excellent season this year. We lacked height ,in the defensive, but this handicap was overcome by the speed and co-ordina- tion of the guards. The aim of the offense this year was more unified teamwork and accurate shooting. Under the guidance and leadership of Miss Brock and co-captains Sally Champion and Gladys Menge, the team achieved its goals successfully. G.P.U.S G.P.U.S G.P.U.S. ........,.. . Lutheran East Despite a strong hitting team, the 1958 Knights had a season's record of four wins and nine losses, which was due mainly to weak team fielding. This year's team will be without the services of six of the nine starting players from last year, how- ever, Mr. O'Connell, the head coach, believes that this year will see great improvement in the team's fielding. The squad is well-balanced and has depth at every position. This year promises to be a success- ful one for the baseball varsity.
