His size and weight were wel- comed on all fields of sports, and he won two letters in basketball, one in football, and one in baseball. He was a member of the Dramatic Club, and his senior year found him Circulation Manager of the Periwn. Elected to U-Club. Harry is planning to enter the V-I2 program in July. That gleeful gal with the flowing blonde locks, the Hawaiian blue car, complete with musical horn, and the alarm clock is Miss Elizabeth Ellen Cadwell, known to her friends as Betsy, to her foes as Cynthy of Tri-Star fame, and to everybody as l943's lovely May Queen. Her sparkling wit is punctuated by her well-known stutter. Betsy is profoundly intelligent, but can find no reason for being at school at 8:40 A.M. She plans to fall, winter, and spring at Smith. Mobile joined our happy throng at the beginning of the tenth grade. His quiet manner and low whistle have become part of D.U.S. He played Varsity baseball for two years and in his Senior year was manager of the football team. As Circula- tion Manager of the Triangle he proved his merit, Theme song: That Old Black Magic. Bob will go into one of the armed forces soon after graduation. CL SS ANNE FLETCHER GEORGE DOWNER SUSANNE KEMI' Beezie is a natural for anything concerned with big business. She is Country Day's most spectacular saleslady. She is a candid camera fan par excellence. As a tribute to her extensive knowledge in this field she was elected Photography editor of Pericml. She was on the Pen Pointe staff in the eleventh grade and on the Tri-Slar stat? from the ninth through eleventh grades. She is an excellent athlete and more than tine iuggler of mathematical problems. Dirty George came over from Country Day in the beginning ofthe twelfth grade, and he was immediately elected President of the Senior class. His quiet dependa- bility has won him many friends. He earned two letters in Varsity baseball, and one in Varsity football, subsequently elected to the U-Club. Favorite line: You don't have to read off my name. Coach. George is heading for the Army after graduation. Susie is known not only for her extraordi- nary mind and popularity, but also for her executive and athletic ability. Not only was she editor of the '42 Pen Pointe but also of the '43 Pericon. Susie is the class expert of sparkling repartee. We shall always remember her as the class salutatorian, and as the smilingly lovely May Queen attendant in '42, Susie will continue her success on the beautiful Wellesley' campus next fall. His days have been spent getting thrown out of English and practicing his father's signa- ture. His avoirdupois lcultivated by swiping desserts! won him a letter back- ing up the Varsity football line, and he also got a letter for his basketball prow- ess. He was elected to the esteemed posi- tion of President of the Student Council. Upon graduation Bob will enter the Navy. Gayle is the little girl with her feet firmly planted on the ground. She has been the very responsible Student Council member from the class of 1943 for the past two years. She is frank and unassuming. She was the editor of Tri-Star in her senior year after three years of fine staff work, She is energetic and eliicient in any pro- jects she attempts. From now on she will do her cheering for the University of Michigan. Buttsy came to us in the second grade. and we have been laughing ever since. His artistic ability is well known and in every sense he is the life of the party, He was Secretary of the Freshman class, advertis- ing manager of the Triangle. Art Editor for the Periwn, and twice a Student Coun- cil member. He got three letters in Var- sity football team and was President of the U-Club in his senior year. Bob will attend Stanford until the Army gets him. -41'--w-N PATRICIA Mau-DUNALD The lovely artist with the luxurious tres- ses is Pat. She is noted for her generous hospitality, her irrepressible brother, and juletone No. 5. She has a striking ward- robe and fascinating costume jewelry. She was elected Art Editor of Perimn. Her pertinent. or rather, impertinent. cartoons embellished this year's Tri-Star. She has a sharpe sense of humor and an incessant giggle. She is a very good sport. She will bask in the California sun at Scripps College, ARTHUR COLTON Archie invaded the hallowed halls in the sixth grade and has since engaged in practically every school activity. He was Vice-President of the tenth grade, Chair- man of the junior Prom, Exchange Editor of the Triangle. Editor of the Perimn and worked in the Dramatic Club. ln the held of sports, he played Varsity basketball for four years, being elected Captain the last year, he played one year each of Varsity football and tennis. I-le is in the U-Club and Athletic Council. The Navy is wait- ing for Art. SHIRLEY Ml-INlJEl.SON Mendy came to spend her senior year at Country Day. She is sincere and under- standing, Clowing is her joy for she loves to sct the class laughing. She is very muniiicent and a superb hostess. The Li- brary Committee was an extra-curricular activity of bers. She is a pitching whiz and the strike out star of the Gold baseball team. She was a star-spangled chorus gal in the Varieties of I9-ii. f' if X W a New- - Q3 if .l 'N' X l' at X 'reflex 'W F I 0 R DONALD FINNIE LUCIE ANN NAUMAN Don left the sacred portals of Hotch- kiss to spend his senior year with us. His originality and speed of thought make him stand out in any crowd. His musical ability is a welcome addition to any party. He was elected Managing Editor of the Perimn and his work was well appreci- ated. In sports he worked with the gen- eral squad and donned a football suit to help the class trounce the Juniors. He plans to lounge at Princeton until the Selective Service finds him. Luce is one of the more volcanic mem- bers of the senior class. She never fails to startle her classmates when she comes out of her serene quandary with some scheme of gigantic proportions. She is impulsive and affectionate. Her greatest luxury is procrastination. She has a smooth wardrobe and never looks the least bit mussed up. She was an able chairman for the junior Prom in 1942 and an equally efficient Student Council president in her senior year. She'll be selling War Bonds at Smith next year. STANLEY DAY Stan came to D.U.S. in the sixth grade, but interspersed a brief bout at the High School. He has the great quality of lead- ership and is a plugger in anything he tries. He was elected President of the Sophomore class, played Varsity football two years, and was a member of the Dra- matic and Glee Clubs. He was Business Manager of the Triangle in his senior year. Uncle Sam is making Stan's plans for the next few years. CLASS MERRILL Me-IILINTOCK CHARLES GETLER NANCY Rl-IICKIE Merrill is the vivacious, dimpled belle of the class. She is bubbling over with en- thusiasm for everything from dachshunds to ballet shoes. Her atrocious puns are a source of terror to everyone but herself. She was a darling pickaninny in the '45 Varieties. She made a striking May Day attendant in the ninth grade. She has closetsful of clothes and never fails to look like a page of illAluIL'IIllli.fL'HL'. She slaved to get out the Senior edition of Tri-Slar. Get's appearance was lirst noticed in the fourth grade, and since then he has become a fixture of the class. His ability and etiorts have attained him a high rank although he is one of the youngest mem- bers of the class. Four years of tennis and two of football finally resulted in a letter last fall. He is Feature Editor of the Triangle and Business Manager of the Perirwl. Chuck will take in a little of Princeton before hitting the Navy. Nan is possessed of that rare character- istic. stability, This shows itself both in the classroom and on the athletic field. She is Grosse Pointe's greatest baseball enthusiast. She has remarkable self-con- trol and is an all-round good sport. She gives vent to her exuberant spirits in an extraordinary laugh which never fails to make her classmates shriek with delight. She has a wonderful sense of humor and only scowls over school work. Q-if A! He has an alert mind and is quick to adapt himself to different situations as they present themselves. He is also a good mixer. Devoting himself to the better- ment of his studies and broken bones, he didn't participate in any sports. He was elected Photographic Editor of the Peri- mn. Favorite line ifalsettol: My son Frank is sick today. Frank will probably get a war job this summer. Midge is the baby of the class. She was an attractive May Day attendant in the eleventh grade. She was in the Varieties of 1943. She is always pleasant and cour- teous. She is active in sports of all sorts. She is an excellent tennis player. Her suntan attests the fact that she is an out- door girl. She is slightly fickle, but once her mind is made up, is stays that way. She has an entertaining wit which creeps into her conversation. IOR ERNEST KRATZET The Wolf was another recruit from Country Day. He is a line example of a mixture of athletic skill, scholastic adept- ness, and likeable personality. He won letters for two years of baseball and one year of football. Being ineligible for basketball because of inter-scholastic rul- ing, he spent the winter chasing McKee around the boxing ring. Favorite line: I guess I'1l have watermelon. Blue-eyed charm and a beautiful singing voice are hers. She is a busy mem- ber of the Senior Council and the Library Committee, She has lovely clothes and always looks stunning. ID IQ X r INV I L. There were two main dramatic events of the year: The Vurieiief of 194.5 by A. F. Carpenter and The Barretty by Marjorie Carleton. l JI'1'6'f1.6?8 was conceded to be the best of Mr. Carpenters many successful productions. It would be hard to enumerate all the boys and girls who helped to make the show a success, but special men- tion should be made of Lydia Kerr's singing, Hazel Wfood and her recitations, Loel Amberg and her Judy Canova songs, Mary Macbeth's superb singing of Night and Day, and of course Ed Henkel's excellent job as master of ceremonies. A surprise post- season performance netted over 3500 for the American Red Cross. The serious dramatic effort of the year was The Barrem, directed by Miss Ford, who deserves great credit for taking such a mature play and getting high school actors to make a success of it. The two outstanding performances were those of Charles Fossatti as Mr. Barrett and Lydia Kerr as Elizabeth.
