Mathematics is one of the fastest growing and the most rapidly chang- ing of all the sciences. Mathematics education in the elementary and sec- ondary schools now emphasizes both the basic computational skills and the structure of mathematics. The K-12 program is treated as an integral part of the whole sequence and is coher- ently related to the work and experi- ence of all previous or future grades. 17
