Almost reluctantly, the rocket leaves the launching pad. Then. as if responding to prayerful urgings. it roars off in a mighty display of flame and power. This rocket, sent aloft to place a satellite in orbit, or perhaps to measure radiation above the earth's atmosphere. is a symbol of man's ever-widening search for knowledge - a search that is leading into new directions. Direction is no longer conceived of as a phenome- non indicated only by the compass needle. Page Four uw llirvotions in Education Continued from Page Three in this highly specialized age calls for new sight, whether it be in the field of science or in the field of education. Like the rocket, Grosse Pointe High School is chart- ing new directions. More and more confidently, it is broadening old paths and creating new ones. Today's challenge provides the thrust to break away from inclinations to stand fast and rest on past laurels. More changes will follow the changes already insti- tuted. The curriculum will become more comprehen- sive, new in some respects but still retaining the best of the old. With vital interest the Class of June, 1959, will watch the progress along the new paths first traveled during its high school years. Today's seniors feel special pride in having been pioneers in new directions in learning. Already an influence in spreading world understanding, the foreign exchange program Long hours . . . good thinking . . . hard work . . . more will surely expand in extent and vitality. That's the age of the Dolphin Club. What? The Dolphin Club. They develop advanced syn- chronized skills and present annual water shows. Water shows? Yeah, three of them so far. Not bad. Good swimmers, eh? All members have to pass real hard tests before they can join. What did they do this year? Oh, the greatest! News Splash! Those girls can Swim, eh? To prepare their act for 'wwf splash' amz, Herrick, HA, and ,inn serene D and Judy Johnson, mms, began with U few um, some mum, and G Swim. They're Dolphins! catchy rhythm. Then follow intensive practice in the water. Barb, Judy, and Ann developed Costumes! Lights! Action! It was opening night. For three flawless coordination and precise timing to synchronize their act. evenings in April, the girls flashed gracefully through their act for admiring audiences. Purdy is the defend- ing state mile champion, a title which he won last year with a time ot 4:2l.B. Senior Dennis de Manigold shows determination as he clears his first hurdle on his way to the finish of the 120-yard high hurdles. De Monigold was the no. i high hurdler last season and is to repeat this year. To combine with Purdy in the running events the Devils also have tine sprinters. Among these ,Pe Y l it A transfer student from Wakefield High in Virginia, where he was the state champion high jumper in both his sophomore and junior years, .lerry Gerich, Jr. is now a full-fledged Devil. His record jump was 6'3 ...and then there i TRAUK!!! o protect himself against wild beasts, early man had to run, jump, throw, climb, and lift heavy objects. His very survival de- pended on his skill and stamina. Now although these activities have become sport, they still put a premium on skill and stamina. In track, or running events, great endurance is necessary. Field events emphasize strength and co-ordination. These events were first organized by the Greeks. From these be- ginnings came the Grosse Pointe High School track team ! l l Since the tenth grade, Tom Andris has been the Devils' steadiest shot putter. Through the years Tom has im- proved to the point that he now can put the shot over 50 feet. Gerich's second best event is the broad jump. Since he did not broad jump in his junior year, the broad jump was comparatively new to the 6'3 senior. Lars was also given All-State honorable mention by the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press. Bad bounces: Bob Hunt's broken wrist, which affected his play for the entire sea- song Rem Purdy's broken elbow, which meant a serious loss to the Devils in re- bounding strength. The loss of a heartbreaker to East Detroit in overtime C64-615, eliminating the Devils from regional competition. This was the final game for seniors Lars Anderson, Tom Andris, Larry Bruzzese, Jerry Gerich, Bill Hooth. Ron was second only fo Lars Anderson in rebounding and fhird in Devil scoring. WyqndoHe's one-handed snuff failed, so Lars' oneehanded fip-in scored one more basket for fhe Devils. Wifh lhis kind of play fhe Devils were able fo defeaf Wyandofle fwice. Typical of Lars Anderson's skill was his abilify fo gain a favorable posilion under lhe boards. Oul- maneuvering a Wyandofle forward Lars was able fo score fwo more for lhe Devils. He led fhe deparf- meni bofh in offensive and defensive rebounds. e l wimming: A Lifetime Sport Good swimmers are made, not born, for swimming is an acquired skill. It must be learned. The success of the swimmer depends upon his desire to improve and upon his perseverance. Almost all varsity swimmers began to swim when they were five or six years of age. By the time they reached high school, swimming was as natural as walk- ing or talking. It was inevitable that they would try out for the team. To make the team, more perseverance was neces- sary. The tankers swim, on the average, an hour and a half every night after school from the start of school in September to the end of the swimming season at the end of March. They swim anywhere from one length, for warm-up, to sixty lengths for endurance. A college career in swimming may await some graduating natators. For others the intensive effort in the sport will end with graduation. For none, however, will swimming end with graduation from high school any more than it began with it. B. C. L. SCOREBOX G. Starting with the concept of singing for the love of it, the Choraleers have become known through their offering of a great variety of musical moods to the discerning ears ofthe Grosse Pointe public. il- harp ymphony, 0. 59 nce upon a time there was a family by the name of Magnum. The Magnums had fifty-nine children, all of whom were very talented. Each had his own likes, interests, specialties, hobbies, amusements, pastimes . . . Well, anyway, they were all different. Yet in their differences they had unity, for they shared their experiences with one another. Take music, for example. Every day, after they participated in their school band, choir, and music literature classes, they raced home before you could say Nicholas A. Rimsky-Korsakov. Howcum such a hurry? The opportunity to attend ten matinee concerts by the Detroit Symphony is one which few serious music lovers would pass up-especially at the reduced student prices. Discussing the merits of Schumann's Second Symphony as they leave the I Ford Auditorium are some of the orchestra's most devoted fans. Frankly, I didn't like classical music until ....., This comment is often heard among the uncounted number of seniors who have taken the music literature and appreciation courses offered by the high school through Mr. Ralph N.
