The democratic government of Greenwood High School is carried on by the faculty and the Student Council. The Student Council is made up of two rep- resentatives from each grade, the president of the student body, and a seo- retary. A faculty adviser is chosen each year by the Council. This year the members chose Efton R. Henderson, supervisor of science. The Student Council and the sponsor representing the faculty work together to govern the school and carry out the few rules. It has been found that in a training center for teachers, as is Green- wood, a government of this sort is most satisfactory. HARRY A. WISE Head of the Training School Department B. Under the expert su- pervision of Miss Henrietta Keller and Mrs. Florence Bugg, the Drum Corps has grown from eighteen members to a group of forty complete with drums, bugles, cymbals, twirlers, flags, and bells. The uniforms are colorful but simple, white skirts, blue jackets, white shoes, socks, and gloves, and blue military hats. The blue drums, shiny bugles, and four beautiful flags add to the harmonious picture the Drum Corps presents. This year the Drum Corps marched at home football and basketball games. It was co- hostess with the G.G.A.A. at the football banquet. Because of travel restrictions, the group did not attend any out-of-town games in a body. The Drum Corps supports all school interests and is an outstanding activity for the girls of Greenwood. V This year the senior drum major was Sally Jo Johnson, and the junior drum major was Sylvia Smith. The the ing but at Bolivar on September 29. initial game proved to be a 13 to 0 disappointment at the hands of Bolivar griders. The team gathered momentum in the next game defeat- Sarcoxie 19 to O. The team, encountering Bolivar again, played well, failed to turn the trick as Bolivar won again by the same score, 13 to 0. The Blue Jays romped through the next game defeating Pierce City 51 to 6. The Sarcoxie team provided spunlcy opposition as the team won again 25 to 7. In the final grid-duel of the season, the Jays' line proved its prowess by holding the Willow Springs powerhouse to only seven points. The scoring record this year was very good with the Jays scoring 114 against their opposition's 52. Hard-hitting Joe Schmalhorst and fleet- footed Jim Sunderland figured heavily in this column. The team won 4 and lost 3 games this year. To earn this medal a boy must letter in three sports and be on the honor roll every six weeks. There is also a silver medal which is awarded to boys who letter in one or two sports and maintain an average of S. This medal is named for Carl A. Davis, an S.T.C. student and athlete. Mr. Briggs has been quoted as saying that Mr. Davis was the finest athlete he ever had lmown. Since Mr. Davis was not graduated from Greenwood, it is hoped that some alumnus will be worthy of having the medal renamed in his honor. Since 1928, the following boys have won the Carl A. Davis medal: 1928 Charles Martin Kenny Kilburn Walter Thomas Walter Tillman Henry Meyer 1955 Dolph Crews 1929 1956 Walter Thomas 1950 Alfred Taylor Billy Bob Dyche Ed Heer 1957 1951 Bova Babb 1938 Guy Callaway 1952 1959 Ralph Crow 1955 Robert Barnwell 1940 , Morris Steonens 1941 1954 Robert Barnwell 1942 Richard McDonnell Eldrich Carr 1943 Richard McDonnell Bill Sanford 1944 David Nolting Garnett Wright 1945 G.G.A.A. Its motto is 'A girl for every sport and a sport for every girln. This year the organization offered these sports: swimming, tennis, archery, basketball, baseball, and hiking. For their participation in these sports, girls may win sweaters, chevrons, letters, and medals. The G.G.A.A. gave a play night, and a combined play night and buffet supper, for the rest of the girls of the high school this year. Mrs. Florence Bugg has sponsored this group since it was organized. The officers for the school year of 1944-1945 were: Charlotte Walsh, pres- identg Doris Fay, vice-president and treasurerg and Carolyn Adamson, secretary. 45 - MM p, NATALIE BRIGGS MEDAL The highest athletic award given to a girl in Greenwood is the Natalie Briggs medal. Tables, arranged in the shape of a NGN, marked the scene of festivities, the Study Hall. Placecards were at each place - books for the faculty, football jerseys Rr the boys, and megaphones for the girls. A team of miniature players scrimmaged on the speakers' table. After an excellent dinner, the toastmistress, Charlotte Walch, called on Coach nSpeedyn Collins, David Nolting, Harry Ben Carr, Dr.Trentham, and next year's captain, Tommy Anderson, for speeches. As an added attraction, the seniors put on a skit - the subject of which was a faculty meeting. The banquet was a fitting climax to an exciting football season. I X ...X-wwulrfffww W . This year the club spent several delightful evenings at various homes, playing games and conversing in French. It was decided at the first meeting that a fine of one cent for each word be imposed upon any of the members who spoke English during a meeting. The club decided to have in the spring a dinner at the Kentwood, paid for by the proceeds of this scheme. The idea was abandoned, however, because of lack of funds. The officers of this year's club are the following: President, Suzanne Madisong Vice-President,Charlotte Walchg Secretary-Treasurer, Patsy Mack. li' 4' 1. . ,fini X, . -.Q ,5, . I lllw 'Y K . On this afternoon those who have deserved special honors are awarded red roses. Students are honored for scholastic attainments, for serving on the student council or as class president, and for participation in various sports. One member representing the band and one member representing the drum corps are honored for these two organizations. This is the occasion on which Fair Greenwood and Sir Greenwood, who are chosen for personality, popularity, and good looks, are introduced by the president of the student body, and Fair Greenwood in turn crowns the First Citizen, who is chosen for scholarship, leadership, and citizenship. After an address by a parent of one of the seniors, Dr. Trentham presents the honored students, reading their names and the activities for which they are being honored. To the strains of WTo a Wild Rose,U Fair Greenwood admits the students to HThe Order of the Rose.U This is done by the giving of a single American Beauty rose to each person. It is with great pride that all students participate in or watch Honor Day. Those who have worked hard during the year feel that their industry has been rewarded, and those who do not receive roses plan that the next year they will work harder so that they will also become members of HThe Order of the Rose.N The following students have achieved the posts of Fair Greenwood, First Citizen, and Sir Greenwood in the past yearsi First Citizen Fair Greenwood Elizabeth Trimble 1926 Inez Gideon Sela Atkinson 1927 Maxine Pinson Natalie Briggs 1928 Emma Jane McDaniel Robert Jones 1929, Marie Frances Walter Alfred Taylor 1930 Mary Helen Knowles Robert Welsh 1931 Virginia Davis Winston Wommack 1932 Betty Crume Morris Stephens 1933 Elizabeth Miller Garrett Wright 193A Doris Crews Arch Lowe 1935 Mary Elizabeth Davis Dolph Crews 1936 Jean Walker Kent Appleby 1937 Rose Anne Keller Guy Calloway 1938 Jean Whisenand Billy Joe Compton 1939 Angie Busiek Joe Keller l9LO Margery Thomas Russell Brown 19L1 Alice H'Doubler Art Marx 19L2 Nancy Jones Richard MacDonnel1 19h3 Kathleen Brown John Bogardus l9hh Ora May Hackney David Nolting 19b5 Patsy Mack Sir Greenwood Charles Rich 19Lb Joe Schmalhorst l9b5 SALUTATOR IAN Earning the second highest average is Charlotte Walsh, a student at Green- wood for 13 years.
