Darula, W. Murray, R. Geotze. SWIMMING Lead by their Captain jim Koehlert, the Cardinal swimimng team racked up another undefeated season of conference meets. They were defeated only by the Yale Freshmen, one of the best college teams in the country. With Ray Chickanis holding down the div- ing and Koehlert taking all the firsts in the 50 and 100 yard free-style, the G.H.S. team proved too much for their opponents. The team was also strengthened by many promising under classmen. Although they were not chosen as state champions, they captured more points than any school in the state meet at Yale, and also won fourth place in the New England Cham- pion ships, the only school in Connecticut to place. Excellently coached by Mr. Covino, all the boys turned in fine records throughout a difficult season. 20

CROSS COUNTRY This year the school turned out one of the greatest cross country teams in its history. Paced by that fleet senior, Ray Chickanis, who cracked the course records at Bruce Park, Norwalk, and Fairfield, the team had a fine year. Besides achieving a perfect slate for the season, they placed first in the County Meet and third in the State Meet. Usually finishing close behind Chickanis, who copped first in all regular season meets, were seniors E. Fox, B. Mead, J. McGrath, G. Brother- ton, and F. Marr. The squad made a good showing at the State Championship Meet, placing third, with Chickanis finishing fifth, and Fox coming in eleventh. The many hours of practice on the two and one half- mile course at Bruce Park under Coach Gustafson certainly paid big dividends.
