Greenville 27 Parker 0 f It was on a cold rainy Saturday afternoon in Sirrine stadium that the Raiders gloriously swamped an out-classed Parker Golden Tornado. Through rain and mud, they fought for this long-awaited victory. And there was no stopping the Speermen, because they scored quickly in the opening minutes of play. From then on, the game was played mostly in Parker 's territory. The score was kept down because of a wet field and frequent fumbling. Payne and Byers consistently broke away for long runs to keep the small crowd in a constant up- roar. The Raiders' offensive attack functioned perfectly and had the District team bewildered, but the slippery oval probably stopped the Raiders as much as Parker did. Cox scored the initial touchdown in a smashing line plunge. Payne slipped oft' tackle for the second six points. Then came Byers' beautiful 77-yard jaunt and a tally. Byers closed the scoring a few minutes later with a sweeping end run from the 14-yard stripe. The Electrics thus upheld the tradition of never having lost a pigskin battle to their inter-city rivals and a seventh state win was added. Only one victory remained between them and the South Carolina title. Greenville 24 Orangeburg 0 f The Raiders climaxed a brilliant season with a convincing victory over Urangeburg in a pre-turkey day battle. And with that victory came the much- cherished state crown. From the opening whistle to the final gun, there was not a doubt in anyone 's mind as to which was the superior team. The Electrics showed clearly that they had everything that a championship team should have. A smooth running attack was a constant threat to the Indians, while the Raiders' aerial work proved just as dangerous. Their defensive play- ing couldn't have been better as the Red and White warriors tackled hard and viciously. Sixteen seniors saw action for the last time in a Greenville High uniform. Payne started the scoring with a 22-yard dash across the double stripes. A triple lateral play with Byers on the receiving end accounted for the Raiders' next tally. Payne later heaved a long pass to Byers which finally resulted in a touch- down. In the waning minutes of the game, Galloway snatched an Orangeburg toss from the ozone and then lateraled to Payne who flashed across the field for the last touchdown of the season. And so came to a close one of the greatest campaigns in the history of Green- ville Highschool football-a clear claim to the Palmetto state football champion- ship, with eight straight triumphs.

The Raiders put up a magnificent battle but that lone point tells the story. And the second out-of-state defeat went into the record book, but still thc Greenvillians' Palmetto state card remained unblemished. Greenville 40 Anderson 0 f Some wise-acre remarked after the Anderson game: Shucks, Greenville High doesn 't need a track team. 'Phat sums up what happened in the Anderson affray as the Raiders ran rough-shod over a slow and heavy Yellow Jacket team on Sirrinc stadium turf. 'l'he game was never in doubt, as McGee, Galloway, Payne, and Monteith Byers all accounted for at least one touchdown. Every player on the squad, with the exception of Bill Byers, who was injured, and the waterboys, saw action. Booty Payne played but five minutes in the tilt, carried the ball five times, and accounted for two six-pointers, besides gaining yardage on the other three occasions. Frank Galloway, a freshlnan, also turned in a brilliant performance, tallying twice-once on a wide end run and another time off tackle-as he displayed ex- cellent broken-field running. This triumph added the fourth straight Palmetto victory. Greenville 25 Spartanburg 0 f On a cloudy afternoon in November, the Electrics rose to supreme heights t.o completely smother a once-dangerous Spartanburg team before an over-flowing crowd on Snyder field. It was one of the worst lickings ever handed a Spartan outfit by a G. H. S. eleven. 'l'he Raiders performed in a truly superb style, playing probably the great- est game of the season. Displaying a brand of spirit and fight that could not he denied, the Speermen opened the scoring in the middle of the initial quarter. Payne flipped a short pass to Byers for the touchdown. A spectacular 72-yard dash gave the Raiders another six points in the closing minutes of the second frame, with Booty Payne lugging thc oval across the double stripes. The Electrics started the scoring again on the third play of the last half. Payne shot a long aerial to Byers for the tally. The Raiders unexpectedly counted again when llinn snatched a block punt from the air and raced 45 yards to the goal. The Greenvillians were clearly the superior as they out ran, outpasscd, and out-punted the Spartans. It was a well-earned and clean-cut victory for the Speermen. Here one of the toughest obstacles in the championship path was removed by the victory-mad Speermen. Greenville 22 Easley 6 f A low mist hung over Sirrine stadium the night of November 11 when the Red Raiders trotted out onto Sirrine stadium to gain revenge from Easley for a beating a year previous. And nearly 10,000 fans, one of the largest to attend a high school game in South Carolina history, roared and gasped, cheered and sank dismayed, as the two teams battled on fairly even terms for three quarters. As the final chapter was about to be written, the score stood 9 to 6 in Green- ville's favor, but Raider fans were squirming in their seats as the Bricemen fought frantically to gain a victory and repeat a state championship.
