'l'he loeals showed up favorably, the line hloeking, eharging, and taekling well, and holding the Beareats to only 11 yards net gain. Mueh ot' the affray was played relaxedly, as the Speermen eased up at times, and there is little doubt hut that the llleetries eould have seored more points. Booty Payne and Bill Byers repeatedly got oft' on long dashes and sweeps, doing all the seoring, Payne 's titi-yard end run being the high light ol' the tussle. 'l'he new first-stringers had good ehanees to display their wares, as did the many suhstitutes whom t'oaeh Speer sent in. And the Raiders were oft' on the tirst lap ol' their South t'arolina state Foot- hall ehampionship raee. Greenville Zl Charleston 7 f tlreenville's winning Raiders played their seeond game ol' the 1938 season under the hrilliant are lights on the turt' ot' heautitul Sirrine stadium and de- l'eated a elassy eleven from l'harleston hy a 2l-7 seore, whieh helies the hard struggle that took plaee. Both teams had to tight hard l'or every l'oot ol' ground, tlreenville reeeiving aid l'rom a few hreaks. ln the last stanza, Jimmy Rhodes snagged a pass thrown hy the desperate t'harlestonians and raeed to a seore in the last thirty seeonds ol' play. 'l'he ltaiders' other tallies eame on a pass, an oft'-taekle dash, and a safety. 'l'his hattle kept the Speermen on their toes and gave them little ehanee for letting up, while t'aptain Rhett Martin did a great joh ot' keeping his mates alert while also setting a good example ot' line-play. Walter Payne and Hill Byers played their usual ahove-the-average games as did the entire team. 'l'hus the Speermen were one step nearer that eoveted ehampionship. Z .m:' I - C-4 .40 Greenville 6 Boys' High 7 f The Raiders journeyed to Atlanta to meet a great Boys' High team in what turned out to be the hardest game of the season. Already a good combine, the Atlantans had an ample supply of reserves and an unusually heavy line which made them formidable and well-nigh unbeatable. Having a limited stock of replacements, the Raiders used their first-stringers nearly the entire game and were left battered and bruised trying to overcome the odds. Boys' High is score came on a South Carolina fumble and a 15-yard penalty in the tirst few minutes of the game. The Speermen tallied on a forty-yard pass from Bill Byers to Payne, who sped 30 more yards to the Raiders, lone touchdown. The all-important con- version tailed. It was a heart-breaking battle to lose, as the Electrics battled their heavier opponents on even terms most of the affray. The Purple line was the heaviest the Greenvillians met all the year. - It marked the first time a G. H. S. eleven had met an Atlanta grid outfit since 1926. It was the first Raider set-hack, but left thc state record intact. Asheville l4 Greenville l3 J f A Greenville High team that seemed lost at times without the leadership of Billy Byers bowed to the Asheville Maroons by the slim- mest of margins, 14-13. The Raiders re- peatedly drove into Maroon territory, but only twice did they have sufficient power to score. It was the third straight year that the Devils had won by one lone point. A pass from Hampton to Carter netted the Mountaineers their first touchdown and Burns added the valuable extra point. Ashe- ville's second tally came by the same method as the first and again Burns' conversion, which later proved to be the deciding factor of the game, was good. The Speermen battled courageously but seemed to lack the necessary punch when near the goal. VValt Payne was the outstanding star as he accounted for all ot the Raiders' 13 points. He scored the first six points on ai beautiful end
