HAROLD ' ' Hoss ' ' HARRISON END During his first year out, and, in- cidentally, his last, Harold garnered a reserve end position on the Raider outfit in 1938. Although he rarely started a game, he usually saw plenty of action in most of the important tilts. His ability to catch passes and his clean, hard tackling made him a dangerous man. Hess is a quiet sort of a chap with a pleasing per- sonality. He is a senior and will not be back next fall. As a one-year man, young Harrison showed marvel- ous development. JOHNNY HSTOPPERH HOWARD GUARD The heaviest man on this year's squad was Johnny Howard, who capably filled one of the guard posi- tions for Mentor Speedy Speer. This was Johnny is first season as a regular, coming up from the second- string eleven of 1937. Good-natured Stopper, as he was appropriately nicknamed, like so many rotund peo- ple, never seemed to get angry or lose his temper, although on the playing field he settled down in earnest to play real football. Charging like a wild bull, it was no pleasant matter to be bowled over by this short, 200- pounder who could change from a formidable gridster to a smiling Well- liked person in a remarkably short time. He has one more year on the Red and White eleven.

But, when he has one man who can play three posts equally as well, he is certain of getting a few more winks of sleep during the pig- skin season. Such a gridder was Buck Miller, who played with brilliance at tackle, guard, and center last year. Switching from one job to the other whenever Coach Speer gave the call, this hefty, two-fisted youth came through when the going was the toughest. Buck was a vital factor in the Red Raiders' 1938 victory march and will be sorely missed next campaign by Speedy Speer and his football contingent, as well as by his fellow students. lVION'l'ElTl-I MoN'rv ' ' BYERS BACK A halfback who is destined to go places during the coming grid cam- paign is Monteith Byers, brother of the redoubtable Bouncing Bill. Dark and handsome, Monty is a triple-threater, able to toss, boot, and scamper-especially scamper. He is particularly fast and is muscular as well as brainy-a great help to any coaching staff. Not used so very much last season, this versatile star should see a vast amount ot' duty in 1939. His name will be hard to omit from the All-State eleven next fall. r 1 Q S it

15 I il? .9 5 ll ll as an 'is' -633666566 T E UTIL Roy THE R11-iam IIUNT BACK Footballs gilt to the ladies, Roy llunt, who was no softie because of this trait, was out for the gridiron game for the first time last season. Immediately he showed promise ol' be- coming a great fullback. Roy is husky, hard-working, and should de- velop into a dependable fullback next year. Built as a line-plunger, he takes full advantage of it by crashing op- posing lines with marked success. The Ripper should be an out- standing candidate for All-State next year. Rumrr Wmf:cKER MARTIN TACKLE Winner Most Valuable Scrub Trophy Always happy and genial was Rhett Martin, not a regular, but voted the most valuable scrub of 1938 by his teammates. This low, squatty line- man was always on hand at practice sessions, lending a hand here and there. Not everybody can make the first team, so good old Wrecker did all in his power to bolster the Raider reserve forces. When he did get in a game, he was fighting it out with the best of them, giving and taking everything like a regular. T. '-
