Therese Povolo, Dennis Dodd, Amy Kiste and Carol McComb get organized before the Christmas Concert. Sandy Muns and Curt Lincoln study their music in A Cappella Choir. Pride is shown in musical achievement. It takes a lot of devotion to sing something over and over until you get it right, or to practice your music until you can play every note. You have pride in your band when you show up on the football field for practice in freezing weather and when you come to those extra choir rehearsals when you have a million other things to do. And finally, there is the thrill of pride you feel when, after a performance, your director says Good job.” Jo Paulson sits first chair clarinet in the Tri-River Select Band. Bill Finkhouse and Louis Hamper pass the time in band waiting to play their drums. Gloria Bradley, Jackie Asiala, Marie Wise and Connie Speesc concentrate on their choir music. 16

In Memory Of Sydney L. Swanton The 1973 Hi-Life is in memory of Mr. Sydney L. Swanton, a former GHS teacher for 35 years who died in the fall of 1972. Mr. Swanton was born at Hardluck on July 12, 1905. He received an AB degree at Central Michigan University and an MA in math and physics from Western Michigan University. Before coming to Greenville, he was a coach, teacher and principal in the Lake City Public School System. In 1936, he moved to Greenville as a math and physics teacher. He also coached football, basketball and baseball. For most of his years at GHS, he was also senior class advisor. Besides being involved with the school, he was on the City Council for five years and was Mayor of Greenville. Mr. Swanton was a member and past-president of the Lions Club, and a past-president of Flat River Conservation Club. We feel that Mr. Swanton was a great teacher and man and a friend to all. He showed a great deal of pride in Greenville High School and in the Greenville area. We are proud to have known him. Mr. Swanton is taking a break during one of his frequent hunting trips. Sydney L. Swanton A good day’s hunt. 17
